"the balance between being catchy and unexpected," this is why I LOVE Adrian's songwriting. the songs that he works on really brings out rappers' and vocalists' colors in ways that most pop songs don't. I've heard and enjoyed a LOT of different types of music throughout my life, and at this point I crave anything that is harmonious, but dynamic, which is why I love SM artists. they are so vocally capable that they can pull off experimental pop pretty much all the time. it's this boundary-pushing, dynamic, modal mixing goodness that makes this type of music feel like the pinnacle of pop. it's creative, it's whimsical, and it just works. I'm blown away that you interviewed the songwriters to my favorite comeback of the year. it takes me back to how much I enjoyed Obsession, Moonwalk, Jopping, AND Superhuman last year. so Adrian and Tay, if you're reading this, please continue doing what you're doing. your music has literally changed my life and there are plenty of people that understand and love your creative visions

So recently I've gotten into SM Boy groups. It started with trying to track down all the songs that have similar harmonizations to NCT 127's Superhuman, like Jopping, Obsession, etc. Doing this, I realized that almost all these tracks have one factor in common: Adrian McKinnon. So I started getting more and more into SM Boy groups (namely EXO and NCT), and recently I've enjoyed taking up editing SM Boy groups' album wiki pages as a hobby, adding as much information as I can find onto the track listing. That has helped me really get to know not only their music, but the stylings of different SM composers and arrangers, as well as the corporate hierarchy of different companies to which SM contracts out these songs. I'm really enjoying this and I've gotta say, Tay and Adrian, as well as LDN's Hayden and Greg really produce my favourite SM boy group songs.
TL;DR I know way more about SM Boy Group music production than anyone has any right to and I love it

If you haven't already, I would also suggest checking out SM boy group songs that Andreas Oberg and Gustav Karlstrom participated in writing :) they're both conservatory trained Jazz musicians, so they're songs have got the thick harmony too! (EXO Stronger, SHinee U Need Me, Retro, etc)

I love the "SM Sound", as you put it, and I'm getting better and better acquainted with all the teams who've worked on SM Boy group tracks. I really like Oberg and Karlstrom's sound, and if I were to make a recommendation, the Devine Channel team (Mostly Lim Kwang-wook) have produced a lot of great b-sides and some title tracks!

When you got to the guitar riff I was like yeah they're gonna like that. It's always my favorite part of WayV title tracks. I consider it thier signature if I'm being honest. I also love how ppl such as myself with NO types of musical knowledge can listen to a song and be like "this sounds so NCT" or "this song is so SM " or " this song gives of LDN Noise vibes ". Determining who makes up the song bc of certain sound sor the overall vibe. I may not really know what makes it that way but it's cool that I feel it nonetheless.

Woah it's so interesting to hear about how they make the songs, even though I don't know that much about music production personally I still love hearing about the different steps in creating the songs I listen to and love. Also hearing about Mark's rap verse in Jopping was super interesting because I recently saw some people criticising it and calling it nonsense - while I obviously knew it means something, I didn't actually know the exact references until now so that's very cool to find out (also damn people are quick to disapprove of things that they just don't understand... it's a shame because it really is an awesome verse)

After the interview with Moonshine back in the Ridin video, it’s amazing to have the point of view of the songwriters and how their flow, feelings and references from the demo are kept as neat as possible (was seen from the 7th sense demo vs the released ver), including the rap sections which make songs to be unique. Thank you for the inside view, it makes the music to be richer and more meaningful. (Also, hope the intense rock sections with the electric guitars going insane end up part being the WayV sound too!)

Hi Umu and the rest of the ReacttotheK! Just wanted to say these videos have helped me appreciate more about music, especially with kpop.
I have always been into music since I was a kid, and really loved singing! Been always been focused on more melodical and lyrical aspects about music, as I loved broadway during majority of my adolescence.
When I got into kpop and my sister showed me this channel, I have learned to appreciate the instruments, and production of a song, making me appreciate the music of different artists more, especially since lyrically my understanding would be limited to the translations. I would just like to thank you guys for opening my eyes (ears) to such a deeper way to listen to music and being able to understand the songs more.
Now, I have been wanting to get into learning how to produce music ever since I got into music but only know how to sing never really know how to play instruments (just super basic lessons from friends or school). Is there a reccomended instrument you think would be helpful for me to learn or some theories I need to learn about music before getting into music making? This would be super helpful for a person who has the passion for music but never really had the time or resources to learn.
Would love to hear your thoughts about this and if ever you guys see this am free to chat and talk about just music and kpop in general.
Thanks enjoyed the video a lot!

Hello andre!! Thank you so much for your lovely comment 😍
I would say the two instruments that songwriters most often know how to play is piano or guitar. And as for music theory, a lot of songwriters know none and still write brilliant stuff. Maybe just the basics would help out- like a level 1 music theory course where you learn about Major/Minor keys, chords and rhythms :)

Thanks for making this video! Honestly turn back time isn’t my exact cup of tea but the dance break is simply insane. Like what Adrian said, I do believe rhythm is one of the factors that makes a song so catchy.
Maybe when you guys can think about this a little? I think a reason why people including Kevin and I (I’m chinese) couldn’t really catch the lyrics is because when the lyrics are translated, the rhythm stills stays the same. Since English uses intonation by sentence while Chinese uses intonation by character, it causes things like the Chinese lyrics speeding up when they’re not exactly supposed to. I realise that popular cpop songs are usually slower since chinese doesn’t have the flow English does and I guess it puts more emphasis on enunciation? To be fair, I don’t listen to a lot of cpop songs but I just wanted to know what your thoughts are in this. From what I see, the producers and songwriters focus more in vibes, so do they get dissatisfied about the vibes getting lost in translation? Or are vibes universal? (This is a question I never would’ve thought I would write out someday, haha)

so many things i like about this interviews you do but my favourite undoubtedly is seeing how much they seem to enjoy making music as they relay anecdotes and such 🥺 its so fulfilling to know they get something positive too from pieces that impact me so strongly and bring so much joy to my day and so much comfort to my life's memories😭 i dont know to what level they get to perceive the audience response, i hope they know and it's rewarding to them knowing their effort wont go unnoticed 🤪 i mean kpop fans, we do tend to get rather intense lol💖💖💖 the meticulous crafting is highly likely to recieve obsessive fixation, its not unusual we get attached to specific subsections and make the attention to detail a mutual affair 💝💝💝

I’m totally serious and I will die on this hill 😂From their cowboy/matador outfits and Xiaojun riding a mechanical bull in Regular to all their countdowns and space references in anything from Take Off to Dream Launch, to Moonwalk being the embodiment of the concept with the ticking clock, cowboy outfits, and space setting, it’s actually really tight and consistent. Even Love Talk has a lyric about going to the moon haha.
