The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has directly purchased an initial fleet of 20 hydrogen vehicles from Alexander Dennis, with production taking place at factories across the UK including in Lancashire and Falkirk.
Like the new trains for the Merseyrail network they are being bought directly by the Combined Authority and will be publicly owned by the 1.6 million people of the Liverpool City Region.
Designed especially for the city region, with input from local people, the buses will feature larger and more comfortable seats with unique pattern designs, just as on the new trains for the Merseyrail network.
With increased capacity for wheelchair users and passengers with prams or buggies, the buses will also be some of the most accessible in the country. The vehicles will also carry a range of special features passengers said that they wanted to see onboard - these include wireless and USB phone charging, internet access and reading lights at all seats.
Other new features of the hydrogen buses include drivers side camera mirrors to improve safety, as well as audio and visual announcements for next stops, with high definition onboard screens to update passengers on journey progress, next stops and onward travel connections in real time.
The new buses will serve the busy 10A route - jointly operated by Arriva and Stagecoach - between St Helens, Knowsley and Liverpool city centre which will become the first Green Bus Route in the city region.
Green Bus Routes will make bus journeys faster and more reliable for passengers by introducing priority lanes, traffic signal upgrades and remodelled junctions to prioritise buses over other road traffic.
The first vehicles will begin to arrive in the city region in early 2023 and will start to enter service from late Spring 2023.
