Japan is not a friend. Its not an enemy. China was an ally not an enemy. We have no claim to taiwan and we all are only widgets to each other, like an employee is to a company. Replacable. . That should make auatralia neutral.

Nothing could solidify the strategic cooperation between Australia, the US and Japan more than if they embraced each other under a quadrilateral organisation including the UK. I’m referring to AUKUS of course, more specifically the second tier of AUKUS involving the sharing of sensitive technologies and cooperation on defence matters. I might add that nothing would cement that relationship more than if Australia orders its eleven light frigates from Japan.
I would go one step further by suggesting Australia join the development program between Japan, the UK and I believe Italy for the production of the sixth generation of fighter planes - which they aim to deliver in around a decade from now. ( to replace our two squadrons of F18 super hornets and one squadron of F18G ( Growlers), which are due to be replaced by then.

this discussion was very informative when it comes to understanding views of potential taiwan conflicts based on Japan. Please do keep posting indo pacific strategy ideas from various kinds of researchers................ Also i am very saddened that there is no researcher representing Republic Of Korea ...... ROK is a crucial member in deterring China. Despite non participation nor pledge made by progressive party of ROK on defending democracy for Taiwan, there should be researchers in Korea showing their ideas on the potential conflicts........ and everything has to be discussed for extracting the best idea for the conflict to prevent and minimize risks associated with PRC.
    a comment from ROK

If the US had not returned Taiwan to China, Taiwan would be Japan and we would have saved all this discussion.
ROK is not enthusiastic with Taiwan because it knows once Taiwan is separated from China, it will be Japan again, not a piece for ROK.

I feel frustrated and not able to understand such terrific discussion held on this video...................... I do hope they become way more short and as powerful as short discussions.....................

A great deal of the conversations on this level are just that, high level geopolitical discussions. I feel your pain, I wish I had a magic button that would at least allow people to understand. This is a public forum. I am lucky enough to be in the group of people who can understand everything as well as read between the lines and see what is obscured. These briefings are likely designed to inform entities, rather than individuals. Be it institutions of higher learning, or other agencies who need a more generalized view of our current defense strategies and the challenges we face in both implementing and maintaining them. As I can see it, you are not exceptionally well versed in english communication, although you are very well learned. That is a barrier you must overcome if you wish to understand exceptionally well. I would also recommend a variety of university studies, as well as civil or law experience. If it makes you feel better, although I may have some natural talent for understanding because of how my mind works, I still have dedicated a great deal of time to research and must always do more on a point by point basis.

Subjects like these are too complex to be discussed in short form. You will just to learn more and focus.

@@kaneanthony7724 Agreed, the long form helps with understanding the complex context of the challenges. The subjects are too important to get wrong, so a basic attention span is required. Short form is perhaps good to use as advertising for this video. But speaking for myself, I personally appreciate the longer deeper discussion. What would be good for CSIS is to see some opposition to the main point of view, perhaps a new debate format? Love the channel, keep up the good work.

    I see.
One China policy: One China with Taiwan and several other independent nations not called China.
I admire the wisdom of these honest persons.

Shocking how they calmly justify the Taiwan separation.
Thinking about how different these people are from those Westerners a hundred years ago.

I think the first major change needed for Taiwan is for its International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3166-2:TW "Taiwan, Province of China" to be changed to only “TAIWAN”. It’s obvious to everyone that Taiwan has never been a province of China.
Second, Taiwan’s Olympic Team should be allowed to compete under the name “TAIWAN” not some weird “Chinese Taipei” name.
