For me, W.C. Fields is the funniest man who ever lived. I never laughed harder or longer or louder than when I was watching a W.C. Fields performance in one of his films....
"The Bank Dick" was my introduction to his genius comedy in 1968 on New Years Eve on WGN (channel 9) Chicago! Along with "A Night At The Opera", my favorite Marx Bros. film on the same night (morning)! My family was already tucked in for nighty-night and one by one they woke up to check on why I was laughing so hard! Bless our favorite memories! Everyone keep well and safe & never lose the gift of a sense of humor! Pax
This was W.C. Fields' last starring film of his career (1941) and he knew it. This is why he pulled out all the stops to settle some scores regarding many of the people who he had to deal with in the movie industry.
⭐️ a surreal masterpiece ⭐️ There’s not one false note in the whole bundle of gags songs and mayhem. Along with “The Bank Dick” this is Fields as a master of irony satire and comic fantasy.
Something strange, Why is there panning when it would look like there is no panning, and some wobbling on the video? I am a little skeptical of this being put up with permission, as these are things that sometimes are done to avoid DMCA
What an amazing comedian! Always heard of W.C. but never had the opportunity to see him. Thanks for posting....he was a fantastic juggler too....just natural.
Vaudeville was his classroom..he perfected all his genius business with the hat and other props, and thankfully they came up with light stories for him to do himself....hysterical....
From the first introduction to WC I have been a avid fan. His juggling abilities are phenomenal. One of his talents that is overlooked but there's still clips around that show his other qualities.
This Field's film is hilarious but to me, "It's a Gift" was the best. That back porch scene is the best. Kathleen Howard is a riot in that film. I never laughed so hard in my life. That film should have won an Academy Award.
RIP Susan Miller (the beautiful blonde) and Gloria Jean (Fields' niece): they just passed away in late August, just a few days from each other. They were 98 and 92.
Something about that car at the end. Some moments are just pure torqued out mania. Especially when it's being dragged in a circle. Visceral stuff we'll never see in films now.
In my opinion HE WAS ALWAYS CONSIDERED THE FUCKING UNDERDOG OF COMEDY, JUST BECAUSE HE WENT AGAINST THE POWERS OF HOLLYWOOD AND PUT THEM(owers & excecutives) POWERS OF HOLLYWOOD MOVIE INDUSTRY... .........FOR ME (MR.FIELDS)WAS AN ALL TIME GREAT AND SHOULD BE WITH THE OTHER GREATS OF COMEDY!!!!!!!!!..........THE MAN WAS FUNNY, VERY FUCKING FUNNY.............R.I.P. HIS ONE-LINERS WERE TOP NOTCH
A few funny WC memories. Ah yes, Drink...one of the greatest pleasures in life. CHEAP...it cost me $5 a gallon! On our excursion to Afghanistan we lost our corkscrew...we had to go for days, on food and water. I bought a wonderful club in Toronto, yeah, a Canadian Club. Why do you drink so much...cause I like it. I noticed today that WC is even funnier, if you slow the playback speed down to about 85%. :)
Thank you ever so for providing me with my first dose of W.C. Fields’ maddening, witty comedic style! Does anyone know why this upload is age restricted, and why the conversation between Fields and Gloria beginning at 32:28 is removed?
Abbott and Costello stole the car scene for their film “In Society.” Unlike other comedians whose work faded, Fields worked at a consistently high level. He got out at the right time, unlike the Marx Brothers, whose demise began when they went to MGM and were placed in a subservient role.
RIP Gloria Jean and also Susan Miller (the beautiful blonde): they just passed away in late August, just a few days from each other. They were 92 and 98.
Why is the dialogue edited out a 32:30? Is there a joke that didn't make it past the censors? Is the original movie censored like this? Other W.C Fields movies on youtube have similar instances of blocks of dialogue cut out.
Classic Fields! The young girl sings beautifully for her age, which I'm guessing is only about 13 or 14. She's also stunningly pretty. Somehow though, she seems too well spoken and refined to be 'related' to someone like WC :~)
it's Gloria Jean, she's a coloratura soprano! Joe Pasternak discovered her to replace grown Durbin in his childish movies! in this movie she did sing herself, it's pre-recorded version, but not dubbed
00:32:30 -- Why was their dialogue obfuscated? What were they saying? 00:41:45 -- Lol! That's the first time that I've ever seen a guy, in a movie, light up a cigarette, right after taking a drink. That's the only way that I could ever deal with the nasty taste of alcohol.
He was one of the greatest comedians of all time. An American classic if there ever was one. And his life was amazing. I just wish he were allowed a fart joke now and then.
FART Joke ? Watch him in the DENTIST where he has a bloke with a big beard in the chair. That turned out to be a VAGINA joke. Is that close enough for you?
So much fun and mayhem! Does anyone know why the backgrounds in the scenes twisted around and shifted? I've never seen that happen in a film. Remarkable singing by Gloria!!!

W.C. Fields was so ahead of his time. His character driven comedy has one flaw : Women don't like him. When you cut off 50% of the audience it is hard to get that Super Star appeal. His character is selfish, unfeeling, and cowardly, but is there a man alive who hasn't had to deal with those feelings? He is a hero for saying things. Lennie Bruce and George Karlin have not caught up to him.
Parody of a man which WC played to the hilt.He claimed his marital strife would have been far less had he a daughter. A caring and attentive lover to his mistress.
My number one choice for funniest comedian ever. Laurel and Hardy are a close second. These folks paved the way and were copied all the way up until now.

These days, so many folks don't know about WC Fields. So entertaining!

Yes! Humor is the best healer laughter and bunked of it pure champagne giggles galor Timing sycronidty timing etc..,,,, hope your day
one of his best lines " I have this theory about Good Liquor and Kids,,,Down with one and to hell with the other". LOL
"Baloney, Mahoney, malarkey, you big Kabluna."
"Kabluna. I haven't been called that for two days."
WC Fields, a class act. So many throwaway killer lines.
Rumored to all be ad libs. Priceless all these decades later. Haven't seen this one in probably at least 30 years ... maybe more.
Decades ahead of its time.
A toast to W C Fields ; & I don't mind if I have another !
I remember watching this on my senior year before I graduated ! W. C. Fields is a comedy genius
This was W.C. Fields' last starring film of his career (1941) and he knew it. This is why he pulled out all the stops to settle some scores regarding many of the people who he had to deal with in the movie industry.
❤
Yes, and what did the studio do? They replaced the great Fields with the inferior Abbott and Costello.
Mr. Fields was a giant!
Mr. Fields was a true genius, a giant, those who followed him, they were and are dwarfs.
@Bill Murray No, you checked into the last padded cell available..
Fields was great and this is a great cast. Gloria Jean was a beautiful young lady with a beautiful voice. It's a shame her career wasn't longer.
Agree!
⭐️ a surreal masterpiece ⭐️
There’s not one false note in the whole bundle of gags songs and mayhem.
Along with “The Bank Dick” this is Fields as a master of irony satire and comic fantasy.
BRILLIANT in the fact that he spoofed himself!
I know!
Don't know how this great movie slipped into public domain, but I'm sure glad it did.
Ours is used with permission from the Fields Estate, so it's the best version :)

It is always a pleasure to watch a true master at work. I adore W.C. Fields , thanks for sharing this. It's been ages since I have seen it.

And Franklin Pangborn was no slouch.
He was a giant!

The diner scene is just about the funniest 3 minutes ever filmed. Inspired!

Love that old version Universal Studios fanfare intro so much! Story; ‘Otis Criblecoblis’ yeah, right. Ha!!
what a great way to brighten up my afternoon out here in cairns in these self isolating days. the greatest wc fields.
No doubt!
The one and only! A genius! A giant! Those who followed, they were dwarfs in comparison. Mr. Fields' shoes were much too big for them!
fields and pangborn, worth the price of a ticket.
Indeed!
My Uncle Bill too, and I still love him too.
Cool!
Amazing that Gloria Jean got cast to play Gloria Jean.... And she was only 15-16 years old.
🤩
She must have been the queen of staccato of her time a beautiful voice.

Bean bag...ah it's very good, becomes very exciting at times. I saw the championship played in Paris. Many people were killed. LOL

Interesting to note that Fields actually was also a screenwriter. He wrote scripts for his own movies under the nom de plume Mahatma Kane.
Very talented!
Bill Hahn Mahatma Kane Jeeves, Otis Cribblecoblis, Charles Bogle, among others.
KingSchism Also of interest that he started his show biz career as a juggler, and was apparently extraordinarily talented at it in his younger years.
@@billhahn4113 : The highest paid juggler of his time ...

Drowned in a bath of whiskey? Death, where is your sting?

Look for the western he made with Mae West that my favourite 😍😍😍😛😛😛

Gloria Jean was the Co-star in this movie. She could actually sing this well and it was her voice. Se is still alive and well in her 90's
