I think generally though if you’re on a bad team you’re not having that much of an impact, similar to how an MVP generally can’t be from a bad team either. The thing is Wemby is such a unique case, in that they become one of the best defenses in the league (top 3) when he’s on the floor, but they’re league bottom when he’s off (in terms of defensive rating). To me that says he should be a special case for DPOY.
He’s gonna win MVP & DPOY joining MJ as the only other to bag both in a season. Matter of time

Context matters. Through the all star break Wemby was limited to about 30 minutes per game. And the team stunk all around. Since then his minutes have increased and lo & behold the Spurs have better team stats to include defensive rating. Since the break they are much better defensively, currently ranked 12th in defensive points per game in that span. If we consider what his impact is when he plays increased minutes, there is no doubt he should be DPOY.
In my mind, Wemby sealed it when Gobert shit the bed against Jokic the other day when he allowed 41 points on 80% shooting from the joker on 1:1 coverage. The DPOY doesn’t let that happen. Jokic used him like a turnstile.
In this modern era of basketball, it's funny to see Jokic x Wemby matchup. Slow, dominante and fundamentaly sound, just like Duncan and Dirk days. Wemby can really change the game and bring the bully basketball back

You can’t say “The Spurs suck”. They collectively were learning how to play as a team, and including Wemby, just hadn’t hit their stride. Since AllStar weekend, they’ve clicked. Their losses are close for the most part. And their games now are loaded with amazing 3pnters, amazing passes, just all around great plays by EACH of them. And inside that, Wemby too is hitting his stride. Of course, he’s an alien so his stride is like no other. BUT he lifts all his teammates into superstardom. They are ALL becoming the best team and the best team for Wemby. Watch out next year and beyond. The talent is already there and Popp knows to get each player to the top of their game and form a top team. Unfamiliar names? No worries. They all will be known by this time next year. Hope they keep their team united- they are recreating an MJ-Bulls type team (or Tim Duncan/David Robinson-Spurs type team). it's simply false to say DPOY is not linked at least in the voter eye to the defensive team rating. It's a major criteria. Every DPOY in the last 5 year has a team at least in the top 4 in this category. so it's necessary (JJJ for example last year). I agree Wemby is a top five defensive player that year, but he's also the sexy choice because of Rudy Gobert fatigue and Herb Williams or Derrick White is not. There's a big difference between him and rudy. You're purely glazing wembys blocks like he isn't 7'5 with the 3rd longest wingspan in NBA history. Rudy has been the anchor to
multiple #1 defensive teams dating back to his Jazz days. The timberwolves have the #2 best paint defense, #3 in 2nd chance points allowed, #1 overall defense, and rudy is top 5 in defense within 10ft. Rudy has BEEN doing this since his 2nd year in the league. The only argument you can have for wemby is his crazy stat blocks which don't even directly contribute to wins or stops most of the time. I can understand that wemby doesn't have anthony edwards, or basically another star player to help him, but the fact of the matter is that rudy has been doing this for years with multiple different teams and teammates. You can't NOT reward rudy for all his efforts when he's nearly #1 in the important categories that impact the game. Wemby will be a future dpoy, but i'm not gonna fall into the trap of seeing "3.6bpg" and giving him the award as the last seed in his conference. Side note, even when wemby is ON the floor, the spurs don't peak higher than #24 in defense. While the timberwolves peak at #1 with rudy on the floor, and fall to the 27th best defense in the league when rudy is off the floor. In reality it is not even close, rudy is the clear cut DPOY.

Giving the trophy to Rudy is purely political. He knows that there's a guy much stronger than him and that this is probably the last year in which he has even the slightest chance of winning. That goes for everyone in the NBA.
The real question is, how could the spurs be so bad? They are young and have experienced a lot of things. But how with a guy like Victor in defense, the other 4 players did not manage to defend decently on the other players.

Wemby is an elite defender, but there are certain situations that have made me personally believe strongly that Gobert should win this season.
Embiid dropped 50 on the Timberwolves, but 70 on the Spurs. I understand that Wemby was not the primary defender so we cannot blame him, but my reasoning is why? If Wemby is an elite defensive center, why is he not guarding the best scoring center in the league? I believe he wasn't guarding Embiid as Popovich knew that Embiid would be able to expose and use all of Wemby's defensive flaws, such as his light frame and lack of strength. When Wemby was the main defender of Alperen Sengun, Sengun dropped career-high 45 points, as he was able to understand Wemby's defense.
There have been 10 games of 40 or more against the Spurs (4 by big men), while just 4 against the Wolves (2 by big men).
I'm not saying Wemby isn't elite, I'm just saying that for now, Gobert is better.
