This is after over a decade plus of running. So here they are, a nutrition gel, shorts/base liner combo, a collapsable windshell, a GPS watch and a waistband. Links to products below:

Thank you for featuring our band!
Appreciate the honesty and knowledge. Thanks for sharing
Appreciate you watching.
Yes! I love Spring Energy gels. It did take me some time to transition after using other gels for years. My favorites are Canaberry and Speednut. I ran my first 50k using them and didn’t have any issues.
Currently have a Fenix 5. I’ve seen a ton of info on Coros and was curious about it. Thanks Billy for sharing your experience! Definitely going to look into one. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes! Got into the Spring Energy products late last year and love them. Ditto the Naked run band. Cool info, thanks Billy.
Great info Billy! I've been searching for the perfect shorts/baseliners. Looking forward to trying out PATH.
I ordered the Apex after this review, and doing a lot of research of course, and I love the watch! Now my wife and 4 other friends have purchased it too and all love it!!
How much did you pay?
You’re making me want to get into ultra running! Love all you videos, getting inspired! Doing my first marathon next Saturday!
Sarah See awesome Sarah - best of luck...you got this! 👊🏼
keep it simple, gear can be over-complicated. Really appreciate this approach! Thank you!
The Coros Apex is awesome! Recently switched from Garmin Fenix 5 and I love the light weight and ease of use. Accuracy has been just as good if not better. I also love how responsive the company is to feedback.
Josh Roberts interesting and good to hear that! My 920xt is nearing the end of its life (as in, suited me for Ironman but battery starting to die for longer ultras) so I’m looking for a replacement. May look into this!
Cool and very informative video with chill jazz playing in the background! Loved it!!
Very solid list of recommendations, Billy. I haven't tried the Path Project gear yet. Have heard nothing but great things about it though.
Always love your films man, thx!
Billy, took your advice on all your recommendations and bought all of them and love them all, last ones are the base liners and shorts and going to try them soon! Thanks for the super great advice! Love my Apex Pro watch!
Love your videos! I’m going to be looking for one of those Patagonia Jackets, thanks!
I like the laundry tips for the liners and shorts and will look into the Naked Belt. Thanks Billy
Very informative and helpful. I can’t wait to order some PATH products
Thanks for sharing these tips! Love my Coros Apex!
Thank you. So much great info in this video. I'm definitely going to take a closer look at all these products.
Mr. Yang I agree with you on COROS Apex watch the battery last a very long time I was surprised how long it did last and if you ever drain the batteries or down to 10% it only takes a couple of hours to fully charge. I think the face is to dim. But other then that I wear it all the time. Thanks for your input. I’m going to try the belt I’ve been looking for something like that.
I'm glad you mentioned the UD ultra jacket. Unfortunately, that was the v2. I have the original and it does all of what the v2 does plus packs down smaller too. Def part of my mandatory gear in any long run.
So awesome, i will def try the belt out.
Every runners channel should have a video like this. And I agree about the shoes. The shoes should be a video by itself if anything.
I like the minimalist view on running!
Damn Coros giving the big brands a run for their money. For half the money. Great vid as always!
Hey Bartender, love the piano on here
thanks for the recommendations, interesting shorts.
The naked belt runs small. Measure the waist where u want it to hang. And order one size up. Should fit.
Path project looks worth a try! Salomons layered shorts system isnt that durable. But works perfectly.
Great recommendations.
Just ordered the Houdini Jacket. Thanks Billy.
Alright Billy, just ordered myself a naked running belt as well. Keep the recommendations coming!
Spring energy gels are the bomb. It’s hard to have anything else now that I’m using those. The Houdini has saved my butt on more than than a few occasions in the back country
The path shorts combo looks legit! Thinking I might give these a go. I think the problem I have had with other shorts is that I have bigger thighs but a slimmer waist. So the shorts end up either being too baggy in the waist or too tight in thighs. Thanks for the recommend!
Thanks so much for the insightful video, Billy!
💥❤️💥
I love the tips. Thank you Billy!
Thanks Billy,happy trails
Very helpful. This is stuff I need to eventually invest in
I also run with a NAKED band and love it! On sizing they say "measure your waist and order that size - ignore you trouser waist size" for example, I am about. 30 inch waist "trouser waist" but measure about a 34 inch. I wear a 34 inch NAKED band (after a couple of go's.....) and it fits great. Save yourself some trouble and listen to their advice!
Just getting into ultras- well haven’t run one yet, but done 25Ks and 2 marathons (1 on trail). Thanks for the inspiration Billy!
I have two Houdinis and a Brook’s LSD. Both r great!
Spring nutrition, as a whole, is amazing. But yes, Canaberry is my favorite flavor in their lineup
Awesome, thank you so much brother! 🙏 I super appreciate these reviews 💯💯💯
Nice vid Billy. I’m more and more intrigued with the Coros all the time. The Houdini is also on my must list.
TRE RUNS both are quality items 👌🏼
Great content, agree 100% currently 3 of 5 items....😉👍🏽
Glad I watched this, I’m a girl but I was on the fence about the Houdini. Just ordered it. Thanks! And gotta love the Canaberry, gels, Sage is a good guy, too 👍
Yes I've order one as well.
Good videos on your channel I’m happy a came across it well done.
thanks for doing an authentic top 5. the dude (Billy) doesn't even ask for likes and subscribes. liking and subscribing.
Thanks billy. Got the naked belt and it’s awesome!
this camera angle view 😍😍
Great video Billy! Really helpful! Are the Graves shorts baggy / flexible enough that they don’t restrict you on the uphills? I’ve always run in the shorter running shorts (albeit not the 1980s skimpy ones any more!). They have the decent cut on the side legs to allow for freedom of movement. Thanks.
Great stuff Billy, totally agree about the Naked belt and about getting the size right, its awesome but get the right size. I used it at Bandera100k and mine was 1 size to small. it was awesome but ill size up. I also agree about getting tired and missing the pocket on the belt. Spring energy rocks! Its really changed my nutrition game. Thanks for all your great videos!
Great feedback. Yes, it took a couple of tries to get sizing down right. They do loosen up after a couple of wears too so that has to be considered as well. But once it was dialed in, I use it all the time. Thanks for watching/commenting!
@@BillyYang ok thanks, ill start to use it on my training runs a bit more and see if it will loosen up, but im a big fan, I feel it kept me cooler than a vest/pack would have which was a plus.
Awesome video! super useful! I will purchasing some of those items. I am preparing the 46k Zermatt ultra and will also be doing a couple of other races in Europe. Maybe see you at the UTMB 2021?
Great video! Putting me on
I have another brand of that style belt and it's my favorite, my phone is also gigantic.
Hey Billy great video. I’m in the market for a lighter jacket than the one I have (OR Helium III) and have been considering the Houdini. I think it’s a no-brainer. Also I have a feeling that my watch is about to bite the dust and will have to take a look at the Coros. And finally the naked waist belt... I’m using a really similar product from UltraSpire called the Fitted Race Belt. It goes for around 32$ and it’s probably my favorite piece of gear. For anyone thinking about getting a waist belt look at either the naked one or UltraSpires... you won’t regret it.
Again great video! Very helpful.
Thanks for comment Allen. The Houdini and Coros Apex are both worthwhile investments although since it's only been a few months, can't quite vouch for its long-term durability...yet. But price point ($349 vs $500-600+), battery life and it being so lightweight amongst other things really made me want to look into it more. And I'm glad I did (as a former Suunto guy). Great thing about the Houdini is Patagonia's lifetime commitment to repairing it as needed. I feel like it's a one-time purchase and can focus gear needs on other items.
Thanks Billy. Very useful.
Thanks Billy. Definitely getting the Naked Running band.
As soon as I saw the heading, I was thinking, "Naked Running Band." I laughed when I saw it shown in that first panning shot. Just picked one up about a month ago after seeing a YT video of a gal racing an ultra with one. I'd been looking for something other than my Nathan 020 (which I really like), and wasn't sure if I wanted to go with a UD style ultra pack and bottles up front, or some sort of hip/holster rig. The NRB is fantastic, and like you, I'm wearing it on almost all runs. The Camelbak 500ml/17oz soft flask fits great in the back, and has a nice twist lock, so it doesn't leak at all. I recently tried the UD 20oz handheld "bottle" (oval shaped) and like that too. The NRB is flat-out, a must have.
Thanks for the head's up on the Houdini and the UD rain jacket. I wonder if you could use some waterproof spray on the Houdini and give it a little more functionality in the rain?
I appreciate you making such a detailed vid! Thanks!
Thanks Billy. Lots of great info there! Quick Q... What do you carry your water/tailwind in?
Thanks for sharing. Have you also used the Houdini Air? I'm currently in the market for a windshirt. Second your endorsement for the path shorts and liners. They are a game changer!
I have used the UD Ultra V2 jacket as an outside third layer when the wind-chill has been below 0. Beautiful product. I just wish it had a see through window on the sleeve so you can see your watch like the Raidlight jacket.
that's a cool idea...more products are doing that. hope they listen!
Thanks for the tips! We share a lot of faves esp the naked band. you can put a soft flask in the back. i have even run slowly with 2 flasks in it.
Glad to hear someone else is doing that. I haven't yet, but that's my plan: To put 2 Camelbak 500ml/17oz soft flasks in the back, sort of like a lazy X.
@@austinado16 need to be a tight fit and it bounces a lot on descents but i always drink the first one fast. one in the back and one on the side. :)
Awesome video Billy. What are your recommended hats that you wear for running. I am not able to find a hat that is minimalist and simple without logos plastered over them.
I’d love to know about the coros watch vs other gps watches, I’ll be looking for a new one soon. The Garmin I use now is over 10 years old...I’m excited for an upgrade 😉
Thanks for sharing these items^^*
I love my Houdini and Canaberry. Have you tried the rain jacket from CampUSA? It packs down to the size between the Houdini and your UD. I used it on my JMT through hike and it was storm proof.
Great video!
Hola Billy question for you …. what kind of socks do you use for run and what socks recommend for run..? and gracias for sharing these tips!
Great music/background setting
Billy i love your vids! Pay attention however, you're running with the Suunto !!
Great review on your running gear. What recording gear and editing software do you utilize to produce such great videos? Cheers.
Awesome video Billy, I love BUNDABERG ginger beer, tastes so good :))))
Have you ever tried ruhn base compression shorts? You can fit all of the essentials in their two pockets. I've ditched my naked running brand since I found these.
I've been tossing around the idea of trying Spring Energy; apparently all I needed was hearing Billy Yang recommend it.
Just ordered and excited to try it!
Nikki Niemeyer let me know how it goes!
Billy Yang Films will do!
Excellent tips!
I use FlipBelt and it's more forgiving on the size because it's pretty elastic. So double cheaper if I remember correctly
Same here I use the flipbelt zip. Its like full price $35?
@@KP-jp9gv Regular model that I use it's around that. They have some more expensive models with zippers, but regular is more than enough imho
Hi Billy what sun glasses you are wearing. It look really cool. I dont think i can get it in Malaysia I
What about the candle? :). I love Spring! The Long Haul is super tasty as is the Mango and the Speed Nut, I’ve done a lot of miles on the trail with Spring. Houdini has been in my bag for a long time. Mine ripped and they repaired the back for free, so I am now like 2 tone red. Also rain ;) ha!
The best belt. The bad thing are the soft flasks from naked. Ordered two and both of them are difficult to open, close. They like to leak.
Haven't tried it so can't speak on it either way. I use soft flasks from Ultimate Direction and they work great.
11:28 hi Billy what is the yellow sunglasses that you were wearing? Looking for some Asian fit glasses that also has good coverage at the temple. Thanks!
Thanks for this!!
My favorite UA-camr!
🙏🏼
Thank you so much 🙏
Please do an update of your 5 favorites!
Is the Patagonia Houdini jacket mandatory gear proof?
Great tips
What type of trekking poles do you use? And what are the hand grip attached to them???
Looking for recommendations for headlamp to use for long runs/ultras (25+ mile). Thanks.
Corps Apex is an awesome watch
very helpful.., bundaberg is great stuff.
All in all a great review session..... question for you, Billy.... what about more hydration?? I sweat a lot, so need to carry more water than the average runner.... I use a Nathan 2 liter vest now, and am looking at a Salamon or UD to upgrade, but I think I need moderate to high water carrying capacity.... what do you do for longer/hotter runs?
oh I sweat a lot too. I can get away with one soft flask for runs
Billy, thank you for the info! Although I use different items, the reason is very simple - my optimization strategy is different. Once again, thank you, especially for info about Coros Apex. My Garmin ForeRunner 235, which I like, didn't lasted even R2R2R (taking into account how slow I am). Will think about this watch as a replacement when time will come.
R2R2R?
@@sneakyvictorsneakyvictor7658 Rim-to-rim-to-rim in Grand Canyon.
@@kao354 Cool. I have a Garmin Forerunner 245M but I don't run long enough for the battery to be an issue 😂
@@sneakyvictorsneakyvictor7658 A tip: before the really long run, delete all previous activities from the watch, increases battery life significantly.
@@kao354 Cool thanks. Hopefully in the future I get to the point where I worry about battery life in my Garmin because of how long my run will be. Right now only doing 10k-12k long runs 😂
Hi, do you use Houdini in races where they require waterproof jacket? What do you use if not Houdini since it is water repellent?
Do you think the Houdini is very breathable for running even under warm weather? How do you take care of it? Do you hand wash/machine wash every time you wear it?
Hey Billy thanks for sharing! Any recommendations for shirts? The links you provided work as affiliate links or would it be the same to buy it directly through the page?
They are not affiliate links. Just shortened. I really like their Cascade shirts (what I'm wearing in the video). Super soft, works as run or casual wear.
Hi, no irritation on this shorts on long ride ? Whazt t shirt do you like to run too ? Thx. I hesitate with Soar shorts actually
very nice!
1. My one is Gu salted Carmel (every one is different on gels find what works, I do want to try the Gels that Kipchoge uses but they are really expensive and I would likely only use them in a warm up race and a race(marathon) and not in training. I don’t take Gu/gels in Ultras, I eat food.
2. My go to long day running short is the Patagonia Strider Pro running short, but checking out Path projects web site the pocket system they use looks good and may be worth the experiment.
3. I have a Patagonia Houdini… it isn’t my go to, I prefer mine to be more breathable. I use a Helly Hansen wind jacket that is discontinued, I will need to find another vented wind jacket when that one dies.
4. I am currently using a Suunto, I have used a Garmin, maybe I will try a Coros when my Suunto dies. The Suunto can capture a fast 100m, I would not trust it to go longer than 24 hours.
5. I sometimes use a running band… it sucks, yours seems like a better option.
Love GU too. I hear you on ventilation although in the mountains when it gets windy and cold, I'd prefer ZERO ventilation and protect me from winds at all costs...haha. Give the Coros a try. I've used quite a few GPS watches and have been most pleased by what Coros delivers.
Extra thoughts:
1. gel: CLIF gels get that trick pretty well that you won't end up with two items after opening it. Try the razz flavor.
2. When you rinse the inliner, a neat trick: spray a whiff of Lysol onto the buttock and the jock area. Better safe than sorry.
Naked is great if, as you mentioned, you get the right size. It's a struggle for folks with a belly. On it, under it, how tight, etc?
I hear ya. They have a pretty broad range so hopefully it can accommodate bigger folks. I wear mine pretty low though because I don't want it directly on my stomach so it seats more on my hips.
You wear your phone in the front of the belt? I'd worry about falling, tripping, and breaking it! Does the belt stretch out to the point where you can't wear it anymore? Love Patagonia jackets. They rock! Lastly, you've got huge hands. I suppose many are envious of this.
Yes, I do. Hasn't been an issue yet. Only caveat might be if I wear the poles in the front, then I'd move it. No real stretching - I think it gives a little from when you first purchase but that's about it. And as for the hands...haha, I promise you they're pretty average.
As a native Queenslander can confirm that Bundaberg ginger beer is both delicious and useful for settling a queasy stomach
Going to purchase a Naked Band just what I've been looking for, love your videos !, can you recommend soft bottles that don't leak if your storing extras for that long run I don't like the bladders Thanks Heaps
Great! I use a Nathan one that flips on and off. I would also suggest looking into the SL version of the band too - my gf got it, it’s a little skinner but still super functional!
@@BillyYang thanks so much for the speedy reply, sorry here in New Zealand who is "SL" might be easier to purchase than Naked
DUH slim line version!!!! Got it .
Can you do a review on the battery life performance of the Coros Apex for an ultra distance?
I can tell you right now Esther that I ran Lake Sonoma 50 mile last weekend starting from a 100%. Race took me about 10.5 hours. I had 65% left. Boom.
I just wanted to let you know that I did an 8 hour race with normal GPS mode starting at 76% and finished with 54%
Does anyone have a working Coros code? looking for a new watch. Also, does anyone know where I can get Spring Energy in Canada and not have to pay insane amounts for shipping?
