You guys are great! Loving that I found you. There is a video of a very young Angelina, maybe even younger than she is here, walking to the music store filled with albums of old singers, jazz etc. she is just sorting through and carrying albums into a booth to listen. We had such places when I was young. I haven’t seen one in the states for many a long year. God Bless Norway for having such a place for this child to spend time.

“When I sing, I go to another world. The world is endless. It's like, full of happiness. I love it. It's amazing. And when I am on stage, I don't want to go [leave the stage]. [laughing]. I just want to be on stage"

You could have been warned. Now the spell is cast , which turned all of us to angels before. 😉She is a master of channeling. The person, who was and is inspiration for her, introducing her to jazz, empowering her, is her Grandma, Iranian artist Mery Zamani, the woman, who handed over the candle to her in the beginning. There is a strong bonding between these both. At "Norway's Got Talent", in the age of 7/8 (she won) she covered Billie Holiday, who is her absolute role model. She also did a breathtaking version of "I'm A Fool To Want Yo" - acappella. Some talked of reincarnation. I like this thought, because Billie Holiday had such a hard life. She would deserve, to grow up so protected. Btw. , the co-musicians in the band, she was working with, called her "the boss", because she was so professional, working seriously, respectful and humble, , with a clear image, what she wanted (wants). Angelina speaks 3 languages fluidly: Norwegian, Farsi and English. Her maternal Grandfather was Japanese, her father is Swedish, so she speaks a little Japanese and Swedish too. You are really great reactors, I love your ability for reception. ✌🏼👍🏼

Angelina was 9 years old in this video. This was her own arrangement paying tribute to the original artist Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.
Many people are not aware that Sreamin’ Jay Hawkins was an opera singer and a boxing champ. He joined the army at age 13 using forged ID. He was a formidable opponent in the army and later in the airforce boxing circuits. He won several boxing golden glove awards mostly in his hometown of Cleveland. In 1949 he won Alaska’s middleweight title.
9 years old Angelina Jordan just delivered him a TKO. LOL

“She studies, embodies and shares.” You are so right. Excellent reaction! And yes, Christina Aguilera is probably the closest you can get in terms of pure vocal talent. But there is a huge difference in terms of musical understanding. Christina was all pyrotechnics all the time, doing everything because she could. Going forward, you’ll see that Angelina only ever does what she needs to communicate the meaning of the song so that you can FEEL it. The fun thing about this particular number, is that it is so theatrical that Angelina can for once go all out with vocal techniques a nine year old shouldn’t even know about, never mind master. And it has duende by the bucketload!

On point. What came to me nie od that she is singing these words to us, the listeners. She has just announced to us that she has just put a spell on us. We are hers now. Each time people first heard her they got enchanted and blessed. Before we get to know her we do not love her. But she loves us anyhow. The words on the lyrics speak to us.

In an interview a couple of years after Angelina was on Norway's Got Talent, Omer Bhatti (one of judges) was asked if Angelina was "the real deal." He responded: "At the second rehearsal [when she did "Bang Bang"] we saw how she owned the stage, directed the bass player, and was in complete control. We knew then that she was a star." Here's the video containing Omer's interview: ua-cam.com/video/j9Fw97Ckvg4/v-deo.html.
Angelina may not "arrange" music in the sense of writing out every note of every part for each accompanist or band member. But she clearly (and politely) communicates in rehearsal exactly how she wants it to sound. This is why they call her "the Boss": she knows what she wants, and politely lets everyone know. The page she handed the director at the beginning of this session is an example: the director described it was a list of her "wishes" (as in "I wish you would do this when we get to this point..."). To see how she works, watch this video of her rehearsing the band for "Portrait of a Child" (AJ's version of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' original "Portrait of a Man"): ua-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/v-deo.html.

  • @johndoe-gt6gp
    @johndoe-gt6gp 2 роки тому +11

You see her writing a note to the bandleader at the very beginning of the video. Those were her last minute “wishes” as she called them, basically her directions on how she wanted the music to be played. So yes, she plans the music as well as the singing.

Terrific approach and commentary men! Angelina similarly respects and has "Angelina-ized" covers of Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Adele (as you know), Whitney Houston, Lana Del Ray, James Brown, Amy Winehouse, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, and many more. No one is off limits, no song too iconic. Angelina is fearless and has the musical IQ to hear these artists' work, decide what she wants to do then can both vocally and emotionally deliver! It is quite a thing to behold as you have twice witnessed!
As for "arranging" that is a hard one to define and I have no direct knowledge. There are interviews available with two guitar players who have accompanied her in studio and they speak of Angelina reading the lyrics off her phone, telling the guitarist to follow her lead, and the result is recorded magic after only one or two takes. That's just one view at her talent. There is another rehearsal video where she hums to the trumpet player what she wants him to play. One presumes her skills in this arranging area at 9yo are not what they are today but I would be hesitant to bet much on that contention. Keep it up guys, I look forward to your in-depth and professional reactions to Angelina!

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English (even at this age) - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based after listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight on how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: ua-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/v-deo.html

Angelina has worked with this band on several occasions. They affectionately refer to her as "The Boss", because she knows exactly what she wants, and how she wants it done. She has 5 original songs that she wrote or co-wrote (3 that she wrote when 11 and 12) She has 2 songs that were written just for her to sing. "Song For A" and "Above The Water". The latter was written by a fellow Norwegian duo called TRXD, that does EDM, and Angelina shows there is no genre she can't do, and do well. ua-cam.com/video/rpdHJJQAd9Y/v-deo.html
As for the first one, "Song For A" from Nico Cartosio's album "Melting".
    The composers description:
"Song for A is the only song on the album. It is performed by Angelina Jordan, a very young and very talented singer. I needed a bright final for my instrumental album. After the series of cold hells and Melting itself I longed for a song of a liberated soul, a soul that was set free from suffering. So, I remembered a beautiful poem by Robert Burns^ and wrote this song especially for Angelina. And she gave a sensual performance." ua-cam.com/video/Bo3mhxPM-uA/v-deo.html
Oh yes, Angelina plays 4 instruments, piano, guitar, flute and violin. I've heard she also speaks 4 languages, Norwegian, English, Farsi and some Japanese (she did a concert in Japan and sang a song in the language that garnered praise from all who heard it, video online) . Her maternal grandmother Mery Zamani, who is Iranian, was also a child prodigy in art and poetry and was married to a Japanese man.
This will be quite the journey, but one that will leave you admiring and respecting this young lady more with every song you hear. I just subscribed to follow this journey. Angelina's reactions are the only ones I watch.

"out of respect, I'm going to take your song to the next level"
Possibly one of the most accurate descriptions of Angelina doing a cover song.
    There 2 upsides to this...
    1. there are 150+ more covers for you to sample and enjoy.
    2. she is only 16 now! At this rate, there are hundreds more to come.
Love your reactions guys, especially exploring the original before her performance.

Hello Guys ! Great reaction again :-) Yes, Angelina was 9 here, but BARELY 9..lol She was 9 years 2 months. Crazy stuff.
Can't wait for your continued discovery of the future G.O.A.T. of the music industry. I'm from Norway, like her, and have been following her closely since she won Norway's Got Talent at 8. (All performances except for the final, were done at age 7. She had JUST turned 8 at the final.) I'm not sure what would be the most correct way for you to go about, but I have compiled a few lists of her Norway's Got Talent entries, her originals and songs that were made specifically for her. Through these lists you will have a good mix of her oldest and also some of her newer stuff. Or, skip right to what she sounds like as of RIGHT NOW, and react to her cover of Adele's "Easy On Me" : ua-cam.com/video/Mpw5Q76hWWE/v-deo.html She was 15 year old here, and is by no means a small child anymore. She's currently 16 years old as of January 10th and stands 6'1 tall (1m 85 cm) LOL Here are the lists :
Norway's Got Talent (In chronological order. You can see her front teeth grow from song to song...LOL )
    1) Gloomy Sunday (Billie Holiday) : ua-cam.com/video/Mpw5Q76hWWE/v-deo.html
    2) I'm A Fool To Want You (acapella performance, and also originally by Billie Holiday) : ua-cam.com/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/v-deo.html
    3) Bang Bang (originally written by Sonny Bono in 1966 and performed by his wife Cher, but maybe made MOST popular by Nancy Sinatra) : ua-cam.com/video/HCaDyiqs7Wg/v-deo.html
    4) Summertime (by George Gershwin) This was her final performance in the competition : ua-cam.com/video/443pBSpx5B4/v-deo.html
    Her originals :
"What Is Life" (Her very first original) : ua-cam.com/video/Bv0r77KN7RA/v-deo.html
"Shield": ua-cam.com/video/lQtUbVKb0vs/v-deo.html (A tribute to her family for all their support)
"7th Heaven" : ua-cam.com/video/bM8DzMRbiIc/v-deo.html (Her second original after being signed by Republic Records)
"Million Miles" (she wrote this one to her grandfather that had recently passed away) : ua-cam.com/video/3KxvwuZ7oEM/v-deo.html (Her first original after Republic Records signing)
"Oslo" : ua-cam.com/video/MfWVcDQix4Y/v-deo.html (A tribute to her home town )
Songs made specifically for Angelina :
"Above The Water" (Dance, electronic !!!!!! YES, she can do it ALL, no cap ) :ua-cam.com/video/y6SilwnR2Zc/v-deo.html
    "Song For A" : ua-cam.com/video/Bo3mhxPM-uA/v-deo.html
Hope you find this of some help to get going. But no matter which song you choose, at any age, you just CAN'T go wrong. Rest assured :-)
Love and respect from Norway :-)

The decision to get familiar with the original is ALWAYS a good idea when you're doing an Angelina cover. She has tremendous respect for the artists she covers, often singing in the same key. This is particularly evident in this masterpiece. The song doesn't even have a melody and ends with the ranting of a lunatic with a bone through his nose. This little girl makes it beautiful all the while paying great respect to Screamin' Jay. Add to that the fact that she arranges the music herself - or at the very least is intimately involved with it. - and you can get a glimpse of what we're dealing with here. She is almost enough to make me believe in miracles because she doesn't seem possible. Have fun with discovering her almost 8-year journey. It certainly is worth your while. You-ll be repeatedly shocked. 😎 Also, check out her Norway's Got Talent performances, her audition instantly went viral, and she has over half-a-billion views on UA-cam alone.

This original song is actually excellent (though of course shocking) and I think Angelina was inspired not by the crappy TV show (where Jim Hawkins was apparently drunk) but by the version that came out on the record. ua-cam.com/video/82cdnAUvsw8/v-deo.html
Also, the wordless melody that Angelina sings in front of the orchestra is taken from Jim Hawkins - this melody was heard in another TV performance ua-cam.com/video/orNpH6iyokI/v-deo.html

A really good example of Angelina mixing it up is her version of California Dreaming by the Mamas and Papas. The guitarist playing with has said she would pick a song, and half an hour later they would record. If it was more than one take it was usually his fault. In some of the songs she did with him you can she her checking the words, so she’s also kind of riffing her way through it, but like a genius.

She auditioned for Norway's Got Talent at the age of 7, by the time she won she won she was 8. The producers ,though blown away by her talent, were concerned that she was too young. However at a meeting when she indicated to the accompanist when he should come in and how, they realised they were dealing with a musical intelligence far beyond her years. She was not just parroting the songs beautifully. She understood and wished to control her performance. I advise watching the clips that have english subtitles. Watch all her NGT performances. By the time she was 12 she had written 2 songs performing on National TV 'Shield.' Her Lyrics show a sensibility far beyond her years. Before her Shield performance in an interview she says the only time she feels like a 12 year old is when she looks at her passport. On the advice of one of the NGT judges her family tried to protect her as much as possible from her too early runaway success and refused record deals until eventually they gave in to pressure from Angelina, and signed with Republic Records. I have a theory that she blamed the refusal to sign a deal with Simon Cowell, who has a track record of exploitation of young artists, for the way she was managed during AGT. Where she was not allowed to perform her choice of song. Though I love her rendition of Yellow Brick Road it does not have the popular appeal, of other choices. When you watch her performances age 13 it is almost unbelievable that she didn't even make the top 5. Absolutely no one could understand it. Though in the end the outrage that followed worked for her. I love her 'Holding Out For You' wich if released officially and not blocked by her parents because of the suicidal overtones would have shot her to international success in her early teens. However her voice gets better with age and its a delight to see her play with the different genre and styles. I you want to Know her bottom range check out her 'How Great Thou Art@ in the same key as Elvis Presley. I also love her 'Born to Die' and Stay' and anything by Adele.

You guys are different from most reactors and that's a good thing. I like how you research and gain knowledge of what you're about to watch. And as for Angelina, well where does one start. Simply put, she is the greatest artist I've ever heard and no one else even comes close to having the impact on me that she does. Bohemian Rhapsody was my first encounter with her and it brought me to tears(and still does). The emotion she sings with is unmatched. The depth in her voice is like no other. I once read a comment that sums it up perfectly, "she is the one I've been waiting my whole life to hear". I would suggest Bohemian Rhapsody next because you will then have heard 3 completely different singing styles and voices from her.

That's a terrific reaction. You guys really get Angelina and what makes her so remarkable, and you articulate it so well. On the arrangement thing, it means composing and writing out the sheet music for all the musicians. In fact, her musicians call her the Boss, not because she is bossy, but because Angelina comes in having clear in her mind exactly what she wants everything to sound like. edit: Donald Lacon Jr below says we don't know for a fact that Angelina writes out the score, so it is possible I am wrong about this.
As far as cultural appropriation goes, there are hundreds of yt videos out there of Black Americans reacting to Angelina singing a song by a Black person and in a Black style, and every one of them is just crazy about what she does, as in "you go girl" or "that girl can sang" You are right, she sings those songs out of respect.
Regarding what to react to next, one of the most remarkable things about Angelina is how many different emotional tones she can express. For that reason I would like to suggest a song with very different tone than the two you have already done, namely her gentle, loving performance of Michael Jackson's Heal the World.

Welcome to this unreal cover and thanks for the wonderful and conscious reaction, it's important to understand the uniqueness of Angelina's work. This interpretation shows how Angelina, from a very young age, manages to elaborate in a splendid way her incredible passion and understanding for music, in particular for this type of mythical songs. She is surely the only 9-year-old girl who has the courage and the ability to take a Screaming' Jay song, imbued of this power, and rearrange it according to her sensibility and musical vision of her. I sincerely believe that this is perhaps the most beautiful version of this song made, in more than 50 years since it was written, yet there are dozens of versions, also sung by great performers. Angelina uniquely embodies the charm of naturalness and passion, she is an inexhaustible source of musical poetry.💛 🧡 ❤️

Angelina puts her own vocal spin and definitely arranges the vocals. One of my favorite parts is the last note (I read it's 13 seconds long). However, to suggest she arranges the sax, trumpet, drums, bass and piano isn't fair to these highly skilled musicians. They also deserve credit. Angelina works harder with more passion at 13 than any other artist. Definitely a generational performer 🍁

    • @lesbrunswick5137

I have always read that she does the arrangements, and that term definitely means writing out, note-for-note, what each musician is supposed to play. However, it is possible that this not the case for the solos. Edit: Donald Lacon Jr says below that we don't know for a fact that Angelina writes out the score, so maybe I'm wrong about this.

As I have understood, many jazzmusicians work off chords, improvising their play and notes, so I guess she has arranged a progression through chords and some events through the piece at hand....like the full stop at "Heyheyhey!". Listening closely to the original and Angelinas version, you can pick out the elements - they are falling in a different order....

@@alexanderholthoer8972The storey is that Angelina's mother was not happy with the dark tones of "Back to Black" and was not going her sign it in the video. Angelina changed some of the words (love instead of black) and she performed it with the radio station band (see video). Angelina has performed with the Norwegian Military Band and produced an album. She sang Fly Me to The Moon for Quincy Jones. It's pretty clear she didn't write all the instrument scores (oboe, flier, violin, trumpets, saxophone, etc parts).
Rearranging the lyrics and doing her own vocals is a fantastic accomplishment but it morphed into her "doing all her own arrangements" which just it's accurate.

On the subject of arrangement, I think she "collaborates" with the musicians in the studio sessions. I don't believe she's writing the musical score for each part but requesting specific adjustments to the arrangement that will better suit what she's trying to express. It seems to me that there is a real feeling of Angelina responding to the music and the musicians responding back. Sometimes you see the musicians reacting in real time to her accompaniment with surprise or pleasure.

Thank you, Jared & Jordan, for your most informative and enjoyable approach to reacting to Angelina. Your use of Wikipedia, your viewer's comments and video clips are a great way to give some background and context about the artists and songs to which you are reacting. It's very helpful for people who didn't know those things beforehand. As a music educator and jazz musician (now retired), I can assure you that Angelina does arrange most of the songs she sings, in the sense that she works with the musicians to determine the format and sequence she want the songs to take. With her covers, in most cases, she usually stays true to the way the original songs were performed, but adds her touches to, as you read, "make them her own". i doubt that she actually transcribes (writes out) the parts for the individual musicians. That would be the job of an orchestrator, not an arranger. With her original compositions, she may very well write out the melodic line of the songs and then someone (an orchestrator) would create and transcribe the parts for the individual musicians. Another consideration, though, it that the many of the musicians she works with are seasoned jazz professionals who would often improvise their parts as they went along. Thanks again for your great reactions to Angelina. Keep them coming. Her "Angels" can't get enough of them (and you)!

Robert You make a good point when you write about various parts being improvised. I think this is clearly demonstrated in her video "Portrait of a Child".

You guys have done the most interesting reaction to this Angelina classic. Great job. Angelina is definitely NOT appropriating other vocalists, she is doing what every other singer in the past has done. Sinatra, Ella, Billie, Vaughn, Streisand, Elvis, etc. have all covered other singers songs, besides introducing original material. From the internet I found just this one example: “The Beatles' "Yesterday" is believed to be the most covered song in history, with about 2,200 known versions as of 2017.” You guys are spot on, Angelina studies, ingests, and I will add, rearranges it to her standards, then shares it with us. Forget being just 9 years old, at any age that is remarkable.

Can you imagine the band members coming to work and finding this 9 yr old there with this song it had to be an incredible day, to say the least.

Eventually, I believe you will get to most of her well known performances, as I have (several times over). In the first recording of her in a studio (at age 6) you can feel a little unease in the first lines, then you can see her confidence and control grow throughout the rest of the song. I have been astounded at the rate at which she develops new skills and techniques. She reached a turning point during the ages of 9 (in this video) and 10 in which her performances really became indistinguishable from those of performers 3 or 4 times her age. I have likened most of her home recordings and covers with pre-recorded backing tracks to "Homework Assignments" which, thankfully were recorded for all to hear. Whether those assignments came from a teacher/coach or she tasked herself with them I do not know. If you project forward just another 5 years, I can not imagine what she will be able to do at the age of only 20.
I enjoy your very thoughtful discussions. I'm looking forward to many more. Take Care.

I was in awe of your reaction to this young ladies song and it was so obvious that you have done your research and know exactly what you’re talking about and more importantly what you are looking for in an artist. There are no words for this particular performance at this young age rather than absolute perfection and total precision. Angelina has shocked everybody with this rendition and I have watched it many times and I’m still impressed. As you continue your journey with Angelina you start to realise what an absolute total master she is in the world of music.Every cover she does she puts her own different spin on it and brings it back to life but still respecting the original artist.Thank you once again I really enjoyed it

Superb reaction. Many vocal coaches and singers have reacted to this masterpiece but of all these only one (MLBoyd) was familiar with the original Screaming Jay performance. Consequently, having only been familiar with Nina Simone's version, a few have criticized her growls and squeals, not realizing hers was an homage to the original. YOU GUYS were thoughtful enough to play the original first. Fantastic idea.
Oh, Angelina's version is the best of all, even above the original. I personally consider this video, alongside Michael Jackson's original Billie Jean/moonwalk video and the 1965 Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody (on Andy Williams Show), to be one of the top 3 musical performances ever filmed. Period.

Awesome introduction Jared & Jordan as you did your homework, reading comments and searching on line for information. After just two reactions, you are both now true angels. I along with other angels have been on a campaign in recent months, suggesting reactors do all they can to support and boost the analytics for the artists they react to. We recommend, in addition to a link for the original video (thanks for that) also providing a link to the artists' UA-cam channel (Angelina has two, Official and Cover Channel). Since most viewers don't read the description, please verbally encourage them to use the links you provided. Much love.

Andy, phenomenal comment! In terms of support for the artist, I think we all agree that it is the right thing to do and helps the artist advance their career. It is also beneficial to the channel in terms of increased subscriptions and fan loyalty.
I think more specifically in terms of links we have the original video, official channels, social media, and patreon links. The most professional reaction channels use all of these. They encourage viewers verbally to like and comment on the original video and to subscribe to the artist channels. Some also use a text box to supplement the verbal suggestions. In fact, some even comment and subscribe on air in front of their viewers to demonstrate their commitment.
These are the most professional analysts I've ever come across on UA-cam and I think it would be valuable to communicate with them regarding the values we have been recommending.

Hi Andy. I've noticed your comments on a number of reaction channels. I just wanted to thank you for being such a champion in getting reactors to encourage people to like and subscribe to AJ's channels as well as putting the original link in the description. I've noticed your hard work and again, just wanted to thank you.

@@kaznist Thank you very much for your kind words. Angelina has always said she wants to sing for the entire world. No doubt in my mind she will, once her family is ready for her to be promoted. Until that time, I will do all I can to boost her numbers on UA-cam and introduce her to more people. It is the very least I can do since her music has greatly improved the quality of my life.
