Unova (adding the sprites' "dancing" made it even better!) 4. Kalos 5. Paldea 6. Galar Otherwise, the only changes would be Sinnoh being 3, and Kanto/Johto (the remade ones) around 4, then everyone else moving down from there. :P
One day I will make "DX" versions of all of these that include remixes and original tracks from spin-offs like Masters EX. In the mean time, I think there are some videos on UA-cam called like "Evolution of X Theme" and might feature the Masters EX remixes of some themes!
RGBY's Gym Leader battle theme only plays for Lance. Everyone else receives the regular Trainer battle theme. And note for the Kalos Elite Four Battle Theme: It actually plays for the Battle Maison's Battle Chatelaines as well.
Huh. I never could get past the Safari Zone as a kid in Pokémon Red, so my first time finishing Kanto was FR/LG. I didn't realize only Lance had the Gym Leader music originally.
Ah!! I had actually forgotten about that when making this video. I’ll leave a note in the description, but actually having Lorelei there still works best because Lance becomes a champion for GSC and I use his portrait in the Champion Battle Themes video on my channel, and FRLG and LGPE do still use the Gym Leader theme for all E4 battles. Thank you for pointing that out!
My stance on all the Elite Four themes: Kanto, Johto, and Sinnoh just reuse the Gymleader themes. I'd say of the best versions of each of the three Gymleader themes, I'd say Johto (HGSS) is the cream of the crop, while Kanto (LGP&E) is second place, and then Sinnoh (BDSP) is a distant third. Hoenn's is solid. I never liked the GBA soundfont, but the ORAS version is really good. Unova's is probably the best in my opinion. Instead of being like a suped-up version of the Gymleader theme like the previous gens or making an equally positive sounding theme to the Gymleader theme much like Hoenn, Unova took the route of being terrifying. Instead of instilling the feeling of "Alright, we're in the homestretch! Let's get it going!" It instead makes you feel like you're about to get killed, like it's life or death as opposed to now or never. Kalos is fine. Not my favorite, but it's still quite good. Just wish it got to the good part sooner, since the fights are so short in-game. Just under Hoenn for me. Alola on the other hand feels a bit tryhard-y. It's like it's trying to instill the same feeling of fear as Unova, but the weird spooky-sounding instruments make it sound kinda bad. I still like it, but it's probably the weakest of the Elite Four themes barring the Gymleader theme repeats. Galar tried to do a similar approach to Hoenn, being a theme that's similar in feeling to the Gymleader theme, yet still being much more powerful than said theme. The difference here is that the Galar one starts off really good, but then goes to shit once it reaches the higher key, then even worse with the cheering. I never liked the higher-pitch portion or cheering portion of the Galar Gymleader theme, and the same can be said for the Elite Four. I know it makes sense in terms of atmosphere, but it's just so corny. I'm debating putting it below Alola, but that beginning portion is just good enough that it barely manages to tie with it. Paldea is in a similar boat to Alola, in that it's trying to be like Unova but doesnt meet the mark. The difference is that Paldea actually gets kinda close with it. I really like this one. It is quite menacing and powerful, and it definitely feels like I'm under a lot of pressure here. It's like I'm in the God damn SATs if the SATs involved beating the shit out of people. Not as good as Unova or Hoenn, but still very good. So the final ranking is as follows: 9: Sinnoh (BDSP) 8: Kanto (LGP/LGE) 7: Johto (HGSS) 6+5: Alola (SM/USUM) & Galar (SWSH) 4: Kalos (XY) 3: Paldea (SV) 2: Hoenn (ORAS) 1: Unova (BW/B2W2) Like I said, those three are at the bottom because of the fact that they're repeats, not because they're actually bad. If we change the list based on how they sound, however, it's as follows: 9: Sinnoh (BDSP) (I really just don't like this theme at all) 8+7: Alola (SM/USUM) & Galar (SWSH) 6: Kalos (XY) 5: Paldea (SV) 4: Kanto (LGP/LGE) 3: Hoenn (ORAS) 2: Johto (HGSS) (Best Gymleader theme by far) 1: Unova (BW/B2W2) (GEN 5 SWEEEEEEEEP!!!)
Top 5 here we go I'm not including the first two that snuck in as gym leader themes pretending to be more important than who they were but still kinda being bops 1. Hoenn, honestly the drums on the new mix help elevate that to another level 2. Unova, banger track, fits right in with the whole "it's our job to jump you" thing 3. Sinnoh, I feel like although BD/SP was severely rushed the elite four mix here does enough different to warrant calling it a different theme, and a pretty good one at that too. It'd be like me adding power rock to the Johto elite four, just epic stuff. 4. Kalos, just some good synths and guitar tbh 5. Paldea, although it at times almost seems to switch into a Sinnoh-esque theme with the guitar, I think it does enough right to warrant a spot here As for Alola, it is NOT on the playlist sorry lol even if it fits I mean just no boppage here. Galar is just a worse gym leader theme, I shake in my boots more when I hear the regular gym leader theme intro playing alone because it's just *better.* And again, sorry to all my Gen 1 and 2 homies, but it ain't my fault they didn't bless you with more Battle! themes.
Imo Unova is the best one without a question. Its percussion and punching notes go astronomically hard and also has melodies that make you feel things... A culminating journey. Hoenn’s is my second favorite. Those claps go hard. But its remaster is just fine. Shoutouts to BDSP for making the Elite Four sound actually different and not just lower pitched Gym leader theme. And Alola’s Elite Four sounds straight out of Pokémon GO which makes it the most different and unique by far.
