For me, it makes sense to either fully support the minion's active skill or its auto-attack with the appropriate gems. In the case of snipers I rely only on their combo skill. In the case of mages only on their auto-attack, so the damage of the active skill is insignificant.
Other nodes simply didn't work :) Apparently the last patch mentioned fixes for the legionnaire, but I haven't had a chance to check yet. And the fourth trial is still buggy. So it's an approach of trying what works, not what you want. Although, I have to say, less cost is a much more effective thing than it seemed, because with a lot of plus levels to gems, sustaining mana for spell spam becomes unrealistic.

How come you dont use the active skill for the frost mages much? What does it do compared to frost bomb?
