Suggestion: Buy some hand warmers and put them under or on top of your toes. I do this regularly for bicycling in cold weather. Because you're sitting your body isn't circulating enough blood to keep your toes warm and extra insulation doesn't seem to help much. The hand warmers are like $10 for 10 pair, and each set lasts several hours.

I once went to fetch a motorbike in winter about 200km away in France, I drove there with my girlfriend and rode the bike back with her following, I also had frozen toes and hands, I decided to cut up a survival blanket and put it in my boots and gloves, it worked like magic. It was last resort, after sitting in the car for 45 minutes trying to warm up. So might help. Happy travels.

Louie, to keep your feet warm you need to get some 8hr handwarmer things that are made for feet and are called toewarmers and each pack has 2 adhesive heat packs that you stick to each foot. You may only need one for each foot in those temps. But today I was in -10 to -30 and I had two stuck to each foot and didn't have any foot discomfort the whole day, so they can work well.

Maybe you should stop at Walmart and in the camping section pick up a buddy heater that runs on small propane cylinders that you can use indoors. I have one and I just love it! It is safe. It’s only going to keep getting colder and colder the more east you travel. And yes, New York is freezing cold but probably a little warmer in the city vs. upstate where I am from.

You are proving what I have suspected that lithium batteries don't perform so well in cold weather and once it's minus temperature they might not even accept a full charge . It's going to get more difficult as you go further north. Good luck.

they remedy this issue in teslas by bypassing the radiatior and circulating waste heat from the motors through the batteries while driving limiting range loss they also do this before charging by (i think) sending opposing forces to the motor creating heat but no motion to warm the batteries allowing a full charge in colder environments there is still a loss but much less than what louie is seeing by not having a similar system in his diy version i think if he disables his cooling system his range wont drop so dramatically

Toe warmers are THE BEST for cold weather!!!! I like to stock up at Costco, but I think you could find them at Fred Meyers or Target. They are more slender than the hand warmers and they have a little sticky pad on them so they stay put. It’s amazing how warm the rest of your body ends up feeling when just your toes are warm. ✌🏼 ☮️

Thank you for sharing your journey! If you can place the little white heater to blow on your feet...that with the sleeping bag and your snow pants, you might be toasty~ it is funny to think that by now, you’re in NYC with Raya and LC (L’il Cole 🙂). Happy and Merry to you and yours. 🎁

Heated Socks available on Amazon 👍😎 Also the east coast is a damp cold that creeps into your bones, and not a dry cold like the west coast🥶

Cold air is thicker than hot air. That's another reason why your range is lower than before.

I used to run a propane "Mr Heater" sitting between the seats. You can get wall mount oil lamps that are very warm. You're in a VW van, I don't want to hear about safety concerns.

Enjoying your electric journey. Gotta let some of that air out of your tires in order to fit.
