I was rushing across a train platform from one train to another once on the way to work, during the pandemic and ran over a chair/bench in the station, rather than around it. There was nobody sitting on the bench. A police officer asked me to step off the train I'd just got onto and had to take my details. Meanwhile, the train pulled away. Apparently I could have broken my neck and needed a police officer to accost me to protect me from myself. I was told that if I did it again, I'd be banned from the station (effectively a threat to my livelihood). That's my main experience of the police. I hear that even if shopkeepers detain a shoplifter, the police won't necessarily turn up to arrest.
