    Since Matt counted a lot of the misflips (the coin landing outside of the bowl) the actual number of flips for HTHTHTHTHT was *907*.
    However, if you take the entire string of 908 flips and translate it into a legit race (where you stop at T, HH, HTT, HTHH, ...and so on) the final run would be HTHTHTHTT, so the race would still be on... maybe it _would_ end on 939 flips.

    Damn, I also wrote a Python simulation and I got so damn close. My original comment:
    "[...]Using this tool, I performed 100'000 simulations for a sequence of length 10 (it took a while).
    I was going to say the median (943), but I like to think you were lucky so I'll say the 25th percentile, 401."
    Always trust the median guys

  • @Kris_not_Chris
    @Kris_not_Chris 7 років тому +2

    Typically the solution to problematic outliers in data is to use the median instead of the mean. I wonder what the median was...

    • @CoolAsFreya

      Or you can call all values outside a certain range outliers, by using the IQR (interquartile range that's Q3-Q1) to determine how spread the middle 50% of values that surround the median are, then excluding any values that are 1.5*IQR above Q3 and 1.5*IQR below Q1
      TL;DR
      outliers < Q1-1.5*IQR

    Wait according to his explanation around 7 min, this is how to get heads or "A" ten times in a row, not how many it takes to get the same side in a row. He may have ended sooner had he accepted the possibility of getting tails, and only quit the runs when he got a different side than the first flip.

    you said 10.000 is a realistic upper boundary for a guess, but in that case, you should calculate the chance of 10.000 actually happening and calculate the lower boundary given that probability and exterminate all the ones below that boundary too, right?

    I can bet Mat is sitting there now counting all the comments, in which people complained about this video cutting off short. And shortly after starting the count he starts to regret it, because this is a thing you simply can't count by using a script.
