Babooshka was actually one of Kate Bush's biggest hits in the UK, getting to no.5. If Wiki's to be believed, none of her earlier stuff charted in Canada, her first hit there being Running Up That Hill in 1985.
Just now I feel so happy that I'm still up here in Finland where it's midnight as I watch this video. I've been a Kate Bush fan from the 1st moment I heard her sing "Wuthering Heights" in 1978. So thank you both very much for this reaction video. P.S. I recently discovered an alternative/Gothic metal/rock band from The Netherlands called Blackbriar and their female vocalist Zora Cock is also a big Kate Bush fan and even sounds a lot like Kate.
Kate Bush is my favorite artist :) I found her just 12 or so years ago through Wuthering Heights. This is also a favorite of mine, but I could listen to nothing but Kate Bush for the rest of my days and be happy. lol
She's a national treasure. :) This song is a great example of how marriage can trap both people in a place of stagnation and resentment. It's important to be honest with each other and not to become complacent.
When I lived in England in the 80s I would go see a band at the Cricketers pub by the Oval named SFX with Alan Murphy, amazing guitarist. He was on the early Kate Bush albums,in fact he was in the video for Army Dreamers. Sadly Alan Murphy is no longer with us died very young.
English is not my native language (I'm from Brazil) and I discovered this song already as an adult. I didn't grow up on that. That said, I understand the language since my teenage years, and I also know Babooshka means "grandma" in slavic languages. And the song keeps me invested, locked in, almost in a trance, until I heard the BABOOSHKA, BABOOSHKA, BABOOSHKA YAYAAAA... I always imagine the man cheating on his wife with her grandma, and always laugh like a maniac at that part. I just can't! I fell in love with her because of this video.
Kate Bush already was from the beginning a complete artist - songwriter, arranger, singer, dancer, choreograph - and knowing exactly what she wanted. It was, after her first recorded demo in 1973 (aged only 15 then), David Gilmour from Pink Floyd interested in her, inviting her and financing/recording some tracks and getting her in contact with EMI. For the first album in 1978 she didn't have the possibility to chose musicians or decide on anything, but she finally had success imposing "Wuthering Heights" as first single - a title that EMI didn't even consider then. Wuthering Heights itself shows perfectly what a great artist Kate is, adapting the novel written 1847 by Emily Bronté to a "personal point of view" with the eyes of the "ghost" character Catherine Earnshaw. The rest is history ♥
Hey there, Another really good video reaction Mike + Ginger! I'm in Kent(as I said) + not far from where Kate lived/grew up in Welling, Was only there the other day as met up with a friend of mine and we went to East Wickham-Open Space Park My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked South East London in Plumstead in Barth Road And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath,Welling, Dartford, on our bikes- He some times gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + some times said hello to Hannah as well as Kate + Robert would make us a jug of Orange Squash etc When you come to UK another place I could show you :-)
The song in my mind is about a woman with paranoia trying to test her husband (obviously) The husband was faithful to his wife but his wife was so paranoid and focused on making her husband cheat that she froze on him (like the song says) and that's why the husband felt so special with babooshka, because she (like told in this video) gave the husband the feeling he was loved... unlike his wife who didn't give her husband any love anymore. And I think the lyrics "just like his wife when she was beautiful." Is referencing or: the things that the wife is scared of. (That the husband thinks she isn't beautiful) Or Another kind of beautiful. The beautiful that means that they trust each other etc. The wife doesn't trust him anymore (why else would she test him) and in that way she isn't beautiful anymore Also I think at the beginning of the song you see the wife (kate bush) before her paranoia got to her. Because you see the husband (instrument) and wife (bush) kiss at the beginning and I think that's supposed to resemble the wedding. I also think that the glass breaking resembles the relationship between the husband and wife breaking because the wife is obsessed with testing her husband. I also like to point out that when she sings just like his wife when she was beautiful. She stabs her husband! Eventually her paranoia is what ruined her marriage.
If you want something truly left field - Sat In Your Lap is the one - she's never looked more beautiful either. Kate Bush - Sat in Your Lap - Official Music Video - UA-cam
Babushka also stands for that nest of Russian dolls, suggesting one person inside another. In August 1980 I was waiting in my car for paperwork at the Czech - Polish border crossing at midnight when this number suddenly came over the PA, so it always reminds me of that moment.
Kate based the "Babooshka" outfit on the fantasy character "Raven - Swordmistress". (Prompt Google image search!) I have no idea if such outfits are available commercially for those with that inclination.
I subbed to your channel cause you did a reaction to The Warning. And just the other day Pau, the drummer of that band recommended three songs to her instagramm followers in a live stream. This was one of them... So ... that's why I'm here now... 😅
So you're saying GInger needs a sword for Christmas? Kate being the book worm she is, got that flashy outfit from the cover of a fantasy novel called Raven - Swordsmistress of Chaos. I would share the cover, but half of her top is off. From what I've seen on line the book reads like a Conan knock off with a female replacement, and she's more of an agility and magic using character.
Yes I live in Texas but I saw a clip of this video while watching Solid Gold in 1980 and one night this played for the "what is happening in Europe section and what is trending in Europe" so they showed a clip from this video and I instantly said while watching it... "fuck Air Supply" haha... True Story. I just love Kate Bush, a true musical genius and such a mesmerizing artist.
That bass is a big instrument, but it looks all the more so next to the quite petite Kate Bush. She's about 5'3", though her talent is undeniably enormous. :)
BULLSEYE GINGER!! On UA-cam somewhere you can find an interview with Our Miss Kate where she totally explains the song! In this case she’s written it sympathetic to the husband! The wife has worked herself into a state, entirely certain he’s strayed. So sends the letters trying to entrap him… But while smitten, all HE can think about is his wife when she was still vivacious & fun, the beautiful object of his enduring affection! And eventually her whole plan blows up in her face! (Hence the mirror being shattered I guess!). Enjoyed the review & reaction! Here’s to all the songs yet to come on your aural journey! 🥂👊
There’s also her explanation for the video. Although the song is in the third person, Kate is playing the wife. When she’s in the plain black bodysuit with a veil on her head, it’s the wife as herself, and when she’s the sexy warrior lady, that’s the wife as Babooshka. The cello represents the husband, being pushed around and manipulated by his wife.
Even though I remember having already heard this song on the radio when it came out, it wasn't until 10 years later that I actually became a fan of her music. I still like her most experimental stuff - "The Dreaming" and "The Ninth Wave" - the most. I'd say "The Dreaming" is my favourite progressive rock album. Ahead of its time way back then and it would still be the same, if it was released now.

I don’t know about you, but I always have a reaction (physical and emotional) whenever I listen to a song I love. We will often share old favorites with our viewers, just as they share new things with us. And the insights we shared were on the themes of the song. This is just how we roll ✌🏻 - G
Sensible middle of the roadies couple. Mike looks as though he runs a paint shop, outside of mainstream for him is probably not wearing a scarf in winter.
That’s pretty rude - G
You already have half this outfit? ... Pics or it never happened! 😜
My husband can certainly confirm 😉 - G
looked more like Kate Ladyshave there to be honest ;-)
Great reaction and did you know on a tangent
Marco of nightwish last week won the Finnish version of the masked singer ?
Songs include Kiss, goodbye yellow brick road, gangsters paradise, backstreet boys .
Have a great Christmas 🎄
