    Turkey is a NATO member. Turkey shot a Russian fighter jet due to airspace violation. Not a drone, but a plane with crew onboard. So I don't believe any country would need permission to protect its own airspace using its own air defence assets. My interpretation is that Lithuania asks NATO to use NATO assets to protect incursions into their airspace. Another possibility is, they don't want to face Russia retaliation single-handedly so they ask for unified action.

    • @Bigdigs2
      @Bigdigs2 22 дні тому +17

      No country needs permission per se from NATO. Countries place select units / assets under a seperate NATO command structure from their national commands (when part of a NATO fast force or NATO operation). Currently, Lithuania does not have any fighter aircraft of their own, so any in country belong to other nations operating under the NATO command.

    • @rally618

    • @tessjuel
      @tessjuel 21 день тому +5

      There are no "NATO assets", each member nation has its own military forces. But Lithuania doesn't really have an air force. They have some transport, utility, SAR and surveillance aircraft but no fighter jets or any other armed aircrafts. They never had much anti aircraft missile systems or guns either and much of what they had was donated to Ukraine.
      So they rely on other NATO countries for their air defence. Hopefully help will arrive soon.

      Denazification and demilitarization of the Donbas, which area is at the border of Russia, are the goals of the Russian SMO. Hasn't changed. The demilitarized zone may have to become bigger if the weapons applied reach to farther distances. I expect up to Kiev, Odessa, Nikolaev etc if the existential threat for Russia continues like this. Maybe up to Berlin like in WW2, who knows. Depends on the hostile actions towards Russia, how big that neutral demilitarized zone has to be.

It was a NORAD radar site where we could see all aircraft activity in that part of Russia. It also had Air Force intercept personal (about 100) on the site to monitor all communication in NE Russia. Yes, they could speak Russian. About once a month we would have a Russian bomber .... escorted by two (sometimes 3) US fighters ... fly over the site..... I was in Crypto equipment maintenance ... One funny thing I remember .... I was setting the the radar section while between shifts with some friends when one of the bombers was coming at the site with its escort when the bomber pilot (I assume ) ... in a rather excited voice radio to his base "They are taking pictures of us ... what do I do?" The response after a short pause was "SMILE" !!!! This Air Force site is no longer there as most all these sites have been removed.

    Putin avoided saying 'Red Line' simply because he had no credibility over his countless past red lines. His threat is powerless. Since the moment he invaded Ukraine, both he and Lukashenko have bent over backwards to avoid triggering any kind of NATO response or intervention. Both of them already know that if they go head to head with NATO, neither country could withstand the onslaught of a NATO-Russia conventional war. Belarus would capitulate in 24 hours, and the invading NATO forces would annihilate the Russian military. If Putin was careless enough to launch a nuclear first strike or a tactical nuclear weapon, the Cold War doctrine for nuclear deterrence, known as Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) will become a manifest destiny. No. Putin is getting squeezed, and he's like a caged tiger, but his teeth and claws have all been pulled. He is getting weaker both militarily and politically every single day.

    That makes no sense.
    Did the US seek a NATO concensus when it shot down those Chinese balloons?
    I can't see any alliance restricting a member from acting to save their own people.
    I think the Baltics, being the smallest and most vulnerable won't act without ensured backup.
    The Ukrainians have shown Poland that Russia is nothing to fear.
    I think if a drone crosses dangerously into Poland they'll forgo the approval of their besties.

    • @hongry-life
      @hongry-life 20 днів тому

      I see a big difference between USA shooting down foreign balloons above the own territory vs installing USA longe range missle systems which have to be operated by the own USA soldiers in a foreign non-NATO country in order to attack another foreign sovereign nation.

    • @hongry-life
      @hongry-life 20 днів тому

      It's then the USA military entering Ukraine in order to wage war on Russia. Because it will not be NATO and it will be not Ukraine (because Ukrainian soldiers cannot operate those systems), but it will be the USA doing that.

      NATO, or actually some countries, not 'NATO', are busy with not that dangerous or threatening materials and it all gets destroyed. F-16s can carry nuslear warhjeads so those will be destroyed with high priority as Russia stated, together with any foreign soldiers and mercenaries in Ukraine or Russia.
      But now that countries threaten Russia with long range missles, then the countries actually start waging war full on and will get retalitation.
      Stoltenberg has distanced himself (and NATO) already from the plans of some separate countries (USA, UK, France, maybe Germany, Poland, Netherlands).

      if Ukraine attacks an Iranian vessel, Iran would have a clear reason to really get invested in the war.
