When I say I think of Rautavaara as a ’colorist’ it is not at all to disparage him - for some reason, his particular auditory/creative sensibilities dovetail with my own color/letter synesthesia (I have 22 distinct colors corresponding to every chromatic note in the scale, distinct for major and minor inflections, except for F-sharp, though I do get alphabetic letters as well for all notes major and minor, for a total of 24). Just to say: in the fugato (#5) he conveys such a distinct sense of what I’ll call the mind of winter, I felt like I was walking across a bluish field of snow to the sauna building, carrying birch sticks in my hand. ‘Man, this is cold!’ I thought - and I could feel it, which is somewhat strange b/c I’m living in an un-air conditioned house in Kansas in 90 degree weather - and then the page turned, and #6 is marked ‘shivering’. He was SO right about that... I’ll just add that I think Rautavaara deserves to be much better known, he’s a pianist’s composer, and this is a very lucid performance. The measure markings / phrase divisions and the lack of time signatures - there’s something in that for everyone who is notionally-oriented to think about. Just why did Rautavaara do that, not do that? The metaphorical aspects, of course, are all my own, or perhaps shared with the composer... in any event how I see it. #Kallinen
Does anyone else hear the Rite of Spring in the 2nd movement? Specifically the solo with the two muted trumpets in the second movement (of rite of spring)
Overall ratings: Prelude I.: 6.5/10 Hype Prelude II.: 5/10 Depressing but interesting. Prelude III.: 7/10 Not gonna lie, this goes hard! Prelude IV.: 6/10 Kinda depressing but has nice melodies and interesting structure. Prelude V.: 5.5/10 Funni Prelude VI.: 4/10 Dark, mysterious with unexpected pitch changes (voice cracks lulw), not bad but still kinda meh Prelude VII.: 8/10 HYPE, I like the “chirping” lmao Rautavaara is the 🐐
Yeah, dodecaphonic would mean that he'd use all 12 notes of the chromatic scale equally by modifying a tone row with inversions, retrogrades and playing it at different Pitches... Not something Rautavaara seems to have done here...
@@sebastianzaczek I read that he actually tried to work with the twelve tone technique for some time, yet he found it not suitable for him so he used free atonal at the end
Do you even know what you are criticizing? Is all the work and labour trash just because you don't understand? I suggest you to be more open-minded and respectful to any kind of work because someone seriously worked on it. And the music that you call not-music is came from one of the most important Finnish composers of our century. Well, I don't know how did you even get here but if you listen to something you don't like like this, you should just say "I don't like it" and if you think that you need to criticize, you have to be way more professional.
Barnacle Boy He’s not right, and clearly both of you don’t have a proper formal education in music for saying that this is not music. Go and educate you pls.

the last prelude sounds exactly like Stravinsky, lol!
Yes
Yeah. Or Messiaen
I love Finish music.
I suggest you to listen also to Gauthier Dufossez’improvisation in Finnish themes.

In the ending too, it reminds me to the danse sacrale
Martí Costa (Músic) especially rhythmically
@@marticosta I was thinking that! The resemblance is honestly kind of uncanny.

Rautavaara is the 🐐
how is thhis composition-technieque called?
Atonal or dodecaphonic.
ok, ty. i wasn't quite sure
It is not dodecaphonic. I think Rautavaara told how he worked rather improvisationally at the piano. Of course there are motivic connections etc.
