    I love this new series of videos ! Because we never know what are the dishes that people really order in restaurants, also restaurants might not include some popular dishes from their country or they change the recipe just because they have to please the tastebud of the country. Like how indian, thaï, vietnamese etc... restaurants might put less spices and flavor to make their cuisine more appealing and less intimidating. I think if people were more open minded, some restaurants would unlock their true potential.

      Absolutely. After spending a month in mainland China a few years back, I was so sad to arrive back in Australia and our poor excuse for their cuisine. But wait! It turns out that if you know what to do you can actually order stuff that’s not really on the menu. Wtf. My local greasy Chinese takeout turned out to be super amazing 🤯 Restaurants have a part to play too, they assume we don’t want better, but we do!

    • @O2life
      @O2life Рік тому +4

      Yes! It's a sad fact that some of the most popular dishes, like Orange Chicken, Chicken Tika Masala, and Pad Thai aren't even part of the food culture in the countries we associate them with. There are so many more delicious traditional options, anyway!
      By the way, if you ever have an opportunity to try Tangerine Chicken at a Chinese restaurant, take it! I've never understood the appeal of American Chinese Orange Chicken, but Tangerine Chicken was a revelation! It's not sugar sweet and is generally more subtle, yet also more complex than Orange Chicken. Plus, it's a little bit spicy, which perfectly balanced the other flavors.

      @@O2life we have to be fair here. The Chinese are one of the nationalities that have populated the US the longest. Unlike others who came much later, the Chinese had to adapt to our tastes at the time to make money. The dishes they put out here may not be what you get from the mainland but it is every bit authentic as adaptations/ fusions go.

    • @O2life
      @O2life Рік тому +3

      @@skyydancer67 I don't find the concept of authenticity particularly helpful in discussions about culture, which is why I framed my comment in terms of what is traditional in the countries of origin.
      I completely agree that American Chinese food is a culinary culture all its own. I still think it's unfortunate that we Americans so often limit ourselves to the tastes we are most familiar with from home instead of seeking out dishes from a completely different cultural context.

    • @AliceBunny05
      @AliceBunny05 Рік тому

      @@skyydancer67 I think it's more that a lot of americans are not aware that they are eating american chinese food, which is certainly a food culture of its own. but they aren't even aware that it's off on its own because they think you'd be able to find all of it commonly in china which just isn't true a lot of the time. it's more about misrepresentation than american chinese food not being a legitimate thing, when it's used to represent china's food scene instead of the american one.

    As a Thai person myself, I found that a lot of the dishes here in this video are different or a bit different from the original dishes in Thailand (for example, we NEVER put broccoli in Panang 😂) The color of the curry also seems pale, and the fish cakes in Thailand look more juicy than in the video.
    Anyway, I am happy to know that our cuisine came across the world and those from far way can also enjoy them, and I am also happy to see that you enjoyed the food here, as well. 😁 This video makes me really hungry now LOL I really crave ยำปลาดุกฟู (the catfish spicy salad) so much!

      The food all looks pretty bad. It seems like they toned down the spice levels. No galangal in the tom kha gai??? It's literally the name of the soup. The jungle curry looks weird. Not spicy enough, wierd veg, and the soup looks weirdly pale like a western chicken soup. The sausages and fish cake both looks dry. Panang was a wierd colour and had broccoli.

    Okay, this is kind of a strange tangent but it's related! I knew Thai tradition meant using a fork and spoon, so when I tried Thai curry, I used the spoon to eat. Revelation time! I have facial paralysis (from Bell's Palsy, had it 3 times so far, fun!) and I have trouble using a fork, I spill alot amd I can't open my mouth very wide so eating is a challenge. Thai food made me realise that using a spoon to eat is FINE, it doesn't make me a failure as an adult. I also discovered the Korean style spoons which are perfectly sized, love them! So now I eat everything with a Korean spoon and chopsticks. Spaghetti, garden salad, casseroles, meatloaf, everything. I know it seems so silly, but I have struggled for 30 years with eating and being self conscious, I have stained every shirt I have owned. I think because I was 16 when it first happened, it is a childhood trauma. I still won't eat noodles in public though! :)

    That Isan (Northeastern) sausage looks more like the Northern sausage “sai-ua” rather than the actual Isan one.
    That characteristic green colour from kaffir leaves, scallion, and cilantro is usually not seen in Isan sausage, which is brownish red. It’s also more common for Isan sausage to have either or both rice and glass noodle in them. I love both, though.

You’ve opened me up to new ideas (I thought I was pretty worldly myself) I love the art & the world community contributions. I feel dumb bc I just realized when I listen to your shows, it actually brings good positivity back into my weekly life. I’d love to see you grow onto bigger networks & be the person who spreads & encourages curiosity, community engagement, reading & arts.

    Love that you did this video, because I love Thai food! I got to see a lot of Thai that I either have not tried or didnt know about because they aren’t in the menus of my usual Thai restaurants. Spicy Basil stir fry and yellow curry are my go-to orders! The catfish salad was very enlightening to me. I’m from Louisiana, and whenever I see catfish on the Thai menus here, I always thought it was because its a fish that’s easily available in Louisiana/Gulf of Mexico area. I never stopped to consider that Thailand also had catfish. That fermented pork dish looked amazing, though, and I want to try it now too since everyone in the video was recommending it!

    What a wholesome episode! I've been waiting for a Thai episode!! I've been studying Thai culinary arts, the language and culture for 7 years because i found their food so interesting and stimulating when i tried it for the first time. (we didn't have any Thai places where i grew up in 90's Finland, only one Chinese place) So when i actually got to try it... just the sheer volume of all the bold and exquisitely strong flavours balancing with each other in perfect harmony ticked all of my boxes. And once i flew there for a foodie holiday as an adult, man the food was like that you get in the western world times x1000. Even though you can opt for "Thai spicy" the food will nonetheless be A LOT tamer than what you get there because people running restaurants can't risk the dishes being returned and complained about.. Like drunken noodles. In Thailand it's almost intolerable on the spice level with the shit tons of Thai chillies and fresh green peppercorns thrown in but here in the western world it's like eating pat si-io with a few chillies thrown in. You know you're eating Thai-Thai food when you're crying, sweating and yet can't stop eating because it's so good.

    Tom Kha is my favourite food in the entire world. I literally special order the ingredients so I can make it at home. I am sooooo glad you tried it in this video!!!! It's definitely more of a savoury and spicy soup than it is sweet. While you did add a little sugar to it, in proportion with the lime leaves and the galangal and the lemongrass and the spices, the sweetness is so very subtle and the amount of coconut used is usually less than the amount of broth which helps to take balance out those sugars as well.

    I was introduced to Thai food by a friend from Singapore. Went to a very traditional Thai restaurant with 4 other couples and she ordered various dishes served family style. We were able to sample a multiple dishes and discover such a wide range of flavors. That was probably twenty years ago and it’s still one of our favorite restaurants. If you ever have a chance to try the beef stew, do it! It’s nothing like the American version.
