How can Mugler survive in 2024?

  • Inspired by Zendaya's insane vintage Mugler look that she wore for the Dune 2 premiere, I started thinking about Mugler - it's crazy rise to success with the spiral jeans, leggings, bodysuits but also it's history and how it could shift the brand following the Mugler X H&M collab. This video is really just me rambling about Mugler lol...ENJOY!

Hey there, Cassie! I’m from a different era (in my 60s) and when I see the vintage Mugler pieces, I think of the iconic pieces that Bob Mackie designed during the late 60s and early 70s for Cher and Carol Burnett. Very cool and out there with sparkles and sequines. Thanks for sharing.

Same generation here (62 in May) and completely agree! Bob Mackie did some incredible show pieces that wouldn't translate to ready to wear.

The mistake they do, is that they are fixated in the spiral.
It was one aspect of Thierry's work.
It is like dior doing only bar jackets.

Great analogy. It’s as if Mugler was just a new brand that got picked up by media and is still in its infancy trying to carve a way for itself, which it is not. Mugler has such a rich and famed history, many of its archive pieces are in museums.
We complain about Chanel relying too much on its archive and not innovating enough, Mugler is the polar opposite, it relies too little on it. I was ecstatic when I saw the reissue of archive pieces in the H&M collaboration, as were many fashion enthusiasts. Reimagining older Mugler and giving it a modern twist, I think could give a major boost to the brand’s popularity beyond just spiral jeans and bodysuits.
Heritage brands have stayed afloat by staying true to their roots, but always looking for ways to innovate and keep up with modern trends, even create new ones.
Mugler is one of my all time favorite brands, but whenever I am looking for Mugler, I always look at second hand pieces from the time when it had the blue neck tags, 2004 tops.
It is such an inredible brand, wasting what it did away is such a big mistake. It’s like the maison is suffer from a mid-life crisis.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk lol.

Love this hot take!! I’ve been collecting 1980’s-1990’s Mugler pieces, and they can be “quiet luxury” in the sense that many of them are just bold silhouettes, similar to what current Saint Laurent is currently pushing out.

Great video and you made a lot of sense!! I agree that the H+M collab did not help the mainline. I also think that they should go back into the archives and come out with some tailored suits. The Mugler suits with the snatched waist were iconic back in the day. I also have not seen the Mugler bags out in the wild. Perhaps they should be paying some infuencers.

I'm biased because I personally love the spirals and bodysuits😅 And I would never have been able to get the jeans and body without the H&M collab, I think they wanted to have more affordable options since it's a brand that is duped a lot by TikTok shops etc but as you said it is a bit of a self-sabotage. I really love this years collections though, especially the corset from the fall line that Dua wore at the Grammys

When I used to think of Mugler, I thought of Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal when she tries on the Mugler dress that Robert Redford then buys for her. Now when I think of Mugler, I do think the Real Housewives and not in a good way. I'm aware a man buying a women for a one night stand and throwing in a Mugler dress isn't classy, but the Mugler spandex catsuit on every housewife is a brand killer!

That spiral thing, man, it only goes one way, and that’s down, down, down. Cadwallader needs to try to do what Daniel Rosebery has been doing so brilliantly at Schiaparelli-make work that is imaginative and smart and original and doesn’t reduce the house codes to a sight gag. Cadwallader would be great over at the reimagined Victoria’s Secret, though.

Hi Cassie you cracked me up RHW 😝 i am so happy that I bought from Nordstrom and never started wearing those sheer bodysuits on top. I recently saw Larsa, you probably don’t know her if you didn’t follow nba or well she is one of Miami RHW ,she wore that. So I am so happy, I returned ( thanks to their great policy😜) it was 700$ and I got instead this gorgeous Tom ford semi sheer roll neck. Its more unique and it can be worn anywhere and 4 seasons . The only thing I like from them, it’s those grey pants, that you reviewed and got. I love them and wear a lot. Have a blessed day🙏❤️

It's been so interesting diving into Mugler as a brand, and I’m grateful for your insights provided (coming from someone who’s only recently embarked on exploring luxury brands). Quick question: do bags and accessories really drive the profits in luxury brands more than ready-to-wear? Makes sense for big names like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Hermes, but what about the ones like Mugler, Alaïa, a The Row or Miu Miu? Huge shoutout to my favorite UA-camr who always brings the expertise! You're simply the best!🩵🩵

I think they are falling into the trap of statement fashion vs practicality. The spiral jeans are the rare item that hits on being a statement piece while also being practical. You could wear them to a party, out to dinner, to the museum even to work (depending on the work). It’s too much to expect lightning to strike twice but at the same time, the team is not giving any practical fashions outside of evening/club wear. Nobody’s going to work/church/errands/parent teacher conferences in see through bustiers with the nipples out or a veil trailing 20 feet behind them. It makes for great publicity but it serves very little purpose in a practical everyday sense. A house cannot survive based on “moments” alone. And we saw when they did give practical fashions, no one cared. They need to cut back on the fireworks and give people something with an everyday spark. Versace does this very well, a unique combination of practical wearability with brash design. Fun fact, it was Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles who pulled Thierry Mugler out of retirement to redo his past designs for her album and tour in 2008 and 2009. Gaga followed with using his designs for her first videos.

their biggest mistake is not yet releasing their spring 2024 collection which is full of archive inspired looks that are perfectly modernized like those fish scale dresses would go viral SO FAST and the skirt with the silicone hip structure already is pretty popular because of the red carpet appearances. They shouldve dropped it the moment zendaya walked out in that robot suit

Their spiral jeans were a great design, he created something fresh and an unique identity for this era of Mugler. However the problem is it's a skinny jeans look which is not in fashion so therefore in this current climate of over sized wear designs and wide jeans which seems to be defining this decade, it looks out of fashion. Mugler has so much potential but they need to really reference Thierry's designs of the 90s which you pointed out.

I don't think H&M was a mistake. Some people didn't know about the brand before that.
But they need to come out with new designs. Not just rely on the mesh and cutouts. Whenever something gets really trendy, people get sick of it after a while and want to see something new. They should have planned what they were going to follow up with. Bags and accessories would be cool.

What's the biggest shame is as Manfred had started to work with Kim Kardashian (I know, I know) on some fantastic looks and reanimating some of the original magic didn't manage to give us more than a handful of gagworthy looks before his untimely death. Their collaboration would have created such a halo for the house and give them a focus based on two lines, the custom by the founder and the contemporary line by his successor that addresses a younger/different audience. So without him and that new burst of creativity they have to find a way to make a splash whilst trying to stay commercial enough.

  • @QUEENOL

I don't really understand why you decided to make a video about Mugler. It has no problems in sales. Casey Cadwallader is the best thing happened to Mugler lately. As well, yet, I see no lack of creativity inside the house. Casey is a good marketer he knows what to do and HM collab is a proof of it. They did it perfect. First, he sold out his collection inside the brand, then after, fans of the brand bought similar pieces (but with far far worse fabrics) at HM. Anyways, these are two totally different markets both sold out. Casey is down to the core of Thierry, all shapes are the same as it meant to be. I think Casey has more futuristic prospective vision of a brand, like something from a spaceships etc. No other brand is similar to Mugler. (Maybe Coperni a little bit, just very little....)

Maybe you’re right but I still think a lot of those brands definitely use the codes of those designers a lot still today and I think mugler could do more 💖

@@CassieThorpe this, house codes are a thing, for some labels more (Chanel, Gaultier), some labels less (Helmut Lang just all over the place maybe Peter Do can salvage, Mugler theoretically a lot of good material BUT alot of it feels unused or missinterpreted).
but obv codes are always paired with a designers personal style. see Rocha for Gaultier, undeaniably both with a tinge more Gaultier.
People just need to learn to not hone in SO MUCH, Sarah Burton was dragged while at McQueen just because she was not the same person. But McQueen house codes, not person Alexander, qas undeniably still recognizable as McQueen. But it will take time, Chanel or Dior designers aren't constantly minutely compared to their founders.

It pays to not be a one trick pony.

No , it opened some eyes to the brand, and access to it became attainable.

I love Mugler! Spiral jeans, bodies, jackets! I fell for all that and haven’t yet regretted buying them. I do think you’re absolutely right and they should be taping into their rich archives ( RIP Thierry) to give us that strong, sexy look! I hope someone from the brand follows you and has taken notes! @cadwallader Casey Cadwallader😊😊😊
Btw, I totally rocked Angel too probably at the same time as your parents especially the hair perfume! That was so unique 20 yrs ago!
