  • In this video I unpack the new ZWO AM5 Harmonic mount and get my first light! I decided to go big, and try out my Celestron C9.25 Edge for my first night out. It is very well machined, and results look promising thus far!

      It did great, but the carbon fiber tripod probably made the guiding a little worse than is possible. I’m sticking it on the AVX tripod and I bet I can do even better.

    Awesome unboxing! I am looking forward to the review. Normally strain wave AKA harmonic mounts are super expensive! This one has a price closer to a premium GEM! I see you got this thing loaded up already but getting sub second guiding! Pretty amazing! Does the one you have use encoders?

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  Рік тому +1

      Yes, pretty impressive, especially on the light carbon fiber tripod. From what I understand the AM5 does not use encoders.

    Strongly considering this mount. Enjoyed your follow-up video on it as well. Quick question, what tablet/phone are you using for the AsiAir app? Super sharp resolution on the screen. I'm using a 2016 Samsung Tab A with S Pen and my stars never look that tight.

  • @CuivTheLazyGeek

    Congrats on your mount! I have to say I've been more intrigued by the HEM27 due to its lower mount weight (by almost 2kg!) and it not using a strain wave drive for DEC (where in my opinion it's not necessary, or at least the ROI on having a strain wave gear there is pretty low), but this is really promising!

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, I agree - especially in DEC. Time will tell to see how this does. The HEM27 also looks like an awesome option. I’m thinking the more competition we see on these strainwave geared mounts, the more competitive the pricing and features. I can’t tell you how nice it was carrying that outside compared to the CGX! So easy!

    • @deep_space_dave
      @deep_space_dave Рік тому +2

      Hey Cuiv! I just got the iOptron carbon fiber tripod to replace the LiteRoc tripod on my CEM26 and wow it's like I have a new mount. I can actually lift it with one hand and carry it over my shoulder. I think it is basically the same tripod that the AM5 uses. I love it as now I can leave my mount setup and take it outside in one piece! Still thinking about the HEM27 though 😀

    • @derekbaker3279
      @derekbaker3279 Рік тому

      Also, the iOptron HEM27 (and now, the HEM44) have some provision for through-the-mount cabling, which will help with cable management. On the negative side, from what I have read, the stock HEM44 latitude range is restricted because of the internally-routed cable(s).

    Definitely going to be a real player in this market. IMHO and for my needs, I'm holding out for the Pegasus NYX-101. It's $1000 more than the AM5 which is a bit of a downer but you get 10Kg more of capacity with counterweight and 7Kg more without counterweight. In my desired portable setup that does make a difference. One other downside is my ASIAir "might" not work with the Pegasus but that remains to be seen. The AM5 looks to be a real winner regardless. Bonus to all of us astrophotographers for sure.

    I am guessing that the mount is way out of balance in RA and DEC - really hard hard to believe that your guiding was that good with the OTA being so bloody heavy relative to the one counter weight on the short CW bar. Crazy! It even looks like it would tip over when the kit is near transit.

    • @AstroBlender

    NEVER use the supplied shoulder strap!!! Mine broke on the first use sending it all crashing onto concrete from 4 feet high!! I am not the only one this has happened to either. ZWO has said they will replace it on their forum, but no other warnings have been sent to owners.
