If you play drums, or for your drummer's benefit, consider mixing in the overheads first and then supplementing with the close-mics. If you do close-mics first and try to blend in overheads later you can wind up with a mess. For drums I like to do: OH>Close-mics>Click and other tracks>other instruments in order of importance. Also if you're playing small places and don't really need overheads, consider using them anyway just for the drummer's benefit. It can get hard to tell how hard they're actually hitting the skins sometimes with in-ears in.
Brilliant job explaining how to run an IEM system! There wasn’t anything new for me really (my band uses an X32 rack and the same splitters as you =) ), but you structured and explained everything so well - wish I’d had this video available back when we planned our rack.
And I agree, those link buttons can cause genuine nightmares!!!

Love the videos and have been using this exact setup for about 3 years. I am very interested in learning what you have to say about setting up effects, EQ, compression or limiting. One thing that scares me is accidental dangerously high volume levels that could could literally hurt someone’s hearing. I’d like to know your thoughts on limiting versus compression when it comes to in ear monitors. We use an X-18 Behringer as well. I’d like to see how you would implement those tools either per subgroup channel or individual input channels. Cheers my friend. Thanks for your expertise !

Thanks for these videos! It clears up a little bit for me because I was wondering about the overhead for the drums, which needs phantom power. If I plug it in with the direct link in (no transformer), then it should work, and the transformer side should go to the house, right?

awesome video. I've been using the xr18 for quite some time now, but there was still some stuff I didn't know. however.. where's the 2nd part? :( really liked this one, so am more curious to see how you process the signal for a better overall mix. ours is a mess sometimes.
Thank you for that bit about the direct vs isolated split. I was going to purchase a splitter rack that is a hardwired Y split but I don't think that would support what I'm looking to do.
You can use a cheap split like that, just make sure you only use the phantom power on one of the consoles only. never use phantom power on both consoles without a isolation transformer.
Basically you’re looking for an xlr patch bay and having an independent isolated split. Lots of bands go this route too but rack splitters just make it easier not requiring separate gear
Were the multi track stems playing back through your DAW or USB in the X16 Air?
I'd like to set up a rig very similar to yours with the capabilities of monitoring backing tracks that have the click embedded in the wav/mp3 files as well as everyone's live performance going through our stage mixer. While simultaneously sending samples and soundscapes to FOH via stems. Ideally running the tracks on a laptop/ipad. I was thinking of running two stereo mixes in a daw, one being the backing tracks + click that only the band monitors and the other mix being samples and soundscapes going to FOH. Is that possible? I know that limits how much the band can hear of the backing track but can it still preserve the versatility to individually mix our live performance in our ears?

Do you have a video where you can show how to send the audio to the earphones instead the monitor? This because when I’m recording the drums the sound stays in the monitors and mics are capturing some monitor sound. I’d like to turn them off and use my earphones while recording.

in my band there is four members to get our individual mix would we have to have our own individual transmitter and receiver per person so another words I would have to own four transmitters and four receivers paid to their own transmitters to get our own individual mix is that correct very new at all this so please forgive me for asking

Can a guitar player change their volume on their amp or have different volume levels per pedal but not change the sound and volume in the bands in ears?
Awesome video Chris thanks! I'm confused on the the whole router/wifi deal. Do you have to have internet service where your playing to use this setup?
You do need internet service, yes. But it doesn't need to be where you are. So for example your at a venue and they don't have no wifi. In this case you just connect the digital mixer via ethermet cable to your won router, that you bring with you. Then you just have to set the digital mixer in the right mode (there is a button that you can set left, midle or right) but that's explained in the video. And the last thing you need to do is connect your device, which you control the mixer with, to the same network as the mixer. I think this is how it works.
When we have been practicing with my band it sounds nice and clear playin individual but even the whole band is playing the instruments are distorted and sound thin

I do have a specific question on your opening I/O comments regarding the splitter and phantom power. You'd basically want to run all dynamic and/or ribbon mics that don't require phantom power through the transformer-isolated outputs to your IEM mixer and any condenser mics that do require phantom power (i.e. drum overheads) through the link outs to your mixer, correct?
I don’t see why you can’t just leave all mics running to direct out. Most sound guys want the isolated outs anyway. At least the local sound guy that’s been doing it 50+ years for big named acts told me that himself

This is basically as low tech as it gets for self sustained IEM mixing. Next step up would be an XR18 and use the Ultranet interface to give everyone a P16-M console to have true individual stereo IEM mixing.
Why do I hear our click so faint in our in ear monitors. We use wing Q and can adjust our individual in ears. Our click is at all the right settings on our board and on our app track. Am I missing something?

fecking nice video. I missed one thing... if you have a backing track and a click. How to split them? How to send to the click in the in-ears only... should I still use an audio interface for that?
If your using stereo mp3 file you would put the click on the Left, and the tracks one the right. Then mail the click into the monitor but not into the mains
Do I need a DIGITAL mixer? And do I need a splitter? Because wouldn’t that mean I have to mess around with what the sound guy has already patched in? I’m completely new to IEM and know literally nothing
So, two guys in our band both have the XR18. Do you have to have the splitter to make the in ears work or can you just set up a transmitter out of one of the 6 aux busses?
You can run ears off of the 18 if you’re using it as your front of house mixer. To isolate your ears from a venue that has their own front of house you have to have the channel splitters and a split snake

Where is the "click" input from? From a computer? or just in the apps of the mixer?
It's from the same playback device as the tracks. It can either be a computer or media player. A click track will be prepared beforehand by the band :)
From where does the click come? Is it something you set globally on some channel or do you send it into the mixer from some "clicker"-tool?!
Here he uses a multitrack session that has a click.
The click will come from whatever source you have a click on : metronome, click backing track, etc

I'm a bit co fused.. with the XR16 I can only have 8 microphones and not 16 through a splitter since the other 8 inputs of the XR16 are line level, right?
No they're still the regular pre amps, just using balanced jack inputs rather than XLR :)

When you save a snapshot..it doesn't just save the IEM mix, but the entire mix....important to understand.

Nice! But what I really need to know and can’t find anywhere is how do we make a stereo mix???
Click on a bus name (on the right hand side) then click "Channel" at the top and there should be an option for Stereo link. Enable it and two busses will link together to form a stereo mix. This will be shown by a chain link connecting them in the list of busses.
@@chrislanterns I’ve done this many times and I’m never able to channel anything on my left in ear using the buses, only through the master mix.
@@VictorCardena3 Maybe I'm too late, but just in case you're still looking for an answer : the main pan fader is for the main output only. When you link 2 busses into a stereo bus, instead of the two tiny horizontal volume faders for bus1 and bus2 (in the upper part of the main mixer page) you get a volume fader and a pan fader. That's the one you have to use to pan sends. Alternatively, you can find the same pan fader in the "sends" tab for any channel, between the linked busses volume faders and the scribble strips.
And an alternative and quicker way to link two busses from the main mixer page is to right click on the chain link icon (besides the 48V icon). At least on the windows version of X Air Edit, not sure about the macOS version.
I’ve always just took up two Aux outs and made adjustments for “panning” between the two channels without stereo linking them by adjusting the faders Don’t want guitar in your left ear, leave the fader down…..

This seems to be "all about" a particular software tool. Shouldn't that name be in the title? Those lacking access to that specific tool can only derive broad concepts. This is not an actual "How To", for a wider audience, on a generic topic. Also, perhaps a warning is in order, that the demonstration may induce a case of "Gear Acquisition Syndrome".
