- This video contains audio of the kenkeni, sangban, dununba, djembe accompaniments and a full rehearsal track for Shemufoli.
The audio is taken from notation by Nigel Sadler based on a workshop by Sidiki Dembele in 2023, Drum Camp 2019 and Hans Camp 2017.
The track is broken down as follows:
00:08 Kenkeni
00:31 Sangban
00:51 Dununba
01:31 Kenkeni, Sangban and Dununba
02:12 Djembe 1
02:32 Djembe 2
02:53 Djembe 1 and 2
03:12 All Instruments
03:40 Échauffement and Break
04:01 Rehearsal Track
26:02 Échauffement and Break to End
This rhythm is from Burkina Faso and it is a rhythm of the Shemu tribe (part of the Bobo ethnic group). Primarily, it is played for the farmers, but also for celebrations, such as circumcisions and is now more widely played at general festivities.
Traditionally, this rhythm was played on a Bara (a drum which is a calabash with a skin on top), a Bobo balafon and a talking drum (lunga) and a mini dundun. One person could play both the talking drum and mini dundun simultaneously. There would be 3 Bara drums of different sizes with different pitches (as there are with kenkeni, sangban and dununba).
The person who adapted this rhythm to djembe/duns was Harouna Dembele (cousin of Sidiki Dembele). So the rhythm is old and very traditional, but this djembe/dun adaptation is much more modern.

Thank you very much, that's exactly what I was looking for so I can practice my solos. 😁
My pleasure.
