    Keep it up man! This is my last semester and I feel the same way. The closer you get to the finish line the more you wan't to just get it done. Congrats on your new job!

    I completely agree! it's really hard to site down and learn those hard concept alone. Being in a structure program makes it easy.

    I remember seeing your video when you first mentioned starting OMSCS (I was looking up info on it since I come from a non CS background). I've spent the last year and a half getting the pre-req classes from my local uni and I'm about to apply to OMSCS 😅 long path and I KNOW that the degree is draining...but there's no path up for my current career...so OMSCS it is! Thanks for the update and congrats on applying for graduation this spring semester! (which likely already started by now)

    Congratulations, it has been a pleasure watching your journey through the program!
    Regarding "easy vs. hard" classes, I try not to worry about what others are doing: harder theoretical classes won't produce much better engineers & representatives of the program. You shouldn't feel the need to justify the classes you completed. Students who pursue the easiest path through the full degree are only depriving themselves of richer learning opportunities.

    Great video. I might add that some of the limitations or disappointments about what you didn't learn might be a function of limited course offerings for the online program. If you were to go in residence at GT, there are many more course offerings. For the material you want to know more about but is not offered by the OMSA OMSCS, you just need to do more self-study which as you mentioned can be hard to do if it's not part of an MS program.

    Uh oh I'm on my last year of my BS and planning to apply for OSMCS with a full time job. I don't have the advantage of working from home back in the covid days. I have heard a lot of people are burning out even during the covid days so it's kinda sway me a little bit. But I am really interested in this degree and hopefully my fire still stays after 2-3 years.

    Hello Bryan, I am a SDE2 in Microsoft and I am interested in going deeper into software engineering. Specifically I want to learn more about processes, cloud computing, serverless. I've been too focused on the frontend and feel that having side projects as course work could keep my up to date ok the backend. Do you recommend any courses?

    • @bryan_truong
      @bryan_truong  Рік тому +3

      Hmm. I'm a SDE I/Level 60 but I came from a full stack background and now don't even touch front end stuff. I haven't taken courses on cloud computing/serverless at georgia tech, since I get that information from my full time role now at microsoft (since I work in azure High performance computing). I did take docker courses on udemy prior to this role, and I had experience writing web servers/api's

    If someone already has a BA/BS in Computer Science is not interested in ML / AI specialized roles or academia / teaching and is already happy with being a Software Engineer, what career advancement benefits would a Master’s degree in CS offer them? Just a 20k pay increase? Since a Master’s degree counts as 1.5 - 2 years of industry experience?

    • @bryan_truong
      @bryan_truong  Рік тому +6

      Good question! I'm not sure if the assumption that a master's degree equates to 1.5-2 years of industry experience is valid, because the master's degree is not as immediately practical as industry experience. Honestly, in the near-term, I think that 2 years of industry experience could be worth more than a newly minted MS in CS graduate with no industry experience. I do think that the master's degree in CS in addition to a BS in CS will open more doors to promotions down the road, though. I can't say for sure, though. I haven't graduated yet, but when I graduate in May, I will be interested to see what the career advancement benefits are and will be sure to share them with the channel

    @bryan , i needed to know about the Salary increase or better job opportunities one can have after completing this masters..can we realistically get a six figure salary?

    • @bryan_truong
      @bryan_truong  2 місяці тому +2

      Like I said, I didn't get an instant salary increase, since I already was a SWE. But yes, it is realistic to get a six figure salary as a SWE after completing the masters (though it is also realistic/possible to get a six figure salary as a SWE without a masters)

    Hi there :) I’ve just completed my grad, and just got into an SDE role. Do you think it’s too difficult to complete the OMSCS along with my job? (I really thrive on my social life, so that would be a factor considered haha)

    • @bryan_truong
      @bryan_truong  Рік тому

      hey! it's hard to say, since that would be something that you can evaluate for yourself. I'm not familiar with SDE- is that the same as a Software Engineer? Generally, if considering OMSCS, just ask yourself if you have the bandwidth to devote around 20 hours a week to school outside of work.

    • @shanegeorgethomas3733
      @shanegeorgethomas3733 Рік тому

      @@bryan_truong That sounds like a good question to ask myself. 20 hours is for one course per semester, right?

    I have an engineering degree from a university outside of the states. Also not from the states. How much is the price to complete the masters degree and do you think that obtaining the masters degree will help in obtaining a software, computer engineer role in an online remote job platform coming from a civil engineering bachelors??

    • @bryan_truong
      @bryan_truong  11 місяців тому

      The price is < $10,000 start to finish. I do think it would be extremely helpful in cases where you are not already in the industry and do not have a bachelor's in CS

      Yeah, I'm not on the admissions board or anything, but I would imagine if you apply, you would have a good chance at getting in. It's not particularly difficult to get in- the difficulty stems from trying to actually finish the program.
