The statement reads, to me at least, that they are going to finish what they are working on now, release it to the public and then just abandon the game to its fate, like they did to Thrones and Troy. It makes no sense to continue work on a dead game. So, hopefully the team will be put onto a decent project where CA actually attempt to give the community what they actually want and not what they think they can sell to the community. That studio has to be one of the most demoralized by this point. They've made two games, one a commercial success (due solely to the Epic deal) but a critical flop, and the second being an unmitigated commercial and critical disaster despite all of their hard work.
Uh, I'm forced to disagree there. I'd much rather CA join a line of developers who didn't get into drama and then come out going 'It's fixed' or 'Here's our latest, top quality, low price'. For an example look at No Man's Sky. False start if ever there was, now it's a solid good game because the developer, especially the owner, didn't get into the drama and. just. fixed. it. I can't play an apology and I don't like paying for a bad game and an apology. If I wanted to pay for apologies I'd hire an actor. I can play a fixed or good new game.
They haven't truly acknowledged anything out of good faith. It's taken considerable community backlash and a sizable dent in their profits for them to actually start acknowledging anything the community has been saying for YEARS. As someone else in this post has said, I sure as hell can't play an apology either.
I'm still convinced the only thing they are really sorry about is the lost revenue. It's a fine letter and a step in the right direction but talk is cheap, just as the Total War leadership team taught us themselves.
To be fair it's a clear indicator for us, the players that we can move the whole company if we just stop spending money on their product. It's not the worst case scenario IF (and it's a really really big IF) they go to the right direction after this. The end result should be the same if they aren't stupid, which is fine by me. As long as i get good game idc if the executives swim in yachts.
Things are never as bad as children put them. Nor are they ever as good as children put them. CA is not the devil. They are just a normal company run by normal people which means they make their share of mistakes. The toxicity I've seen is from the community, not CA. And they have that base covered very well indeed. 60+ year old Total War fan from the original Shogun Total War. CA has had their ups and downs for sure.. but this is not ANY type of justification for calling them names and hurling insults. If you don't like them, just move on and stop clogging the internet with stupidity.
If you read between the lines: - Thrones of Decay was supposed to be in the scale of Shadows of Change - the price remains the same but now they are panicking and packing in extra content
- 25$ usd is the new standard for WH3 DLC now. - If they ever make a new race expansion, they may ask for 35-40 usd now. - If Thrones of Decay doesn't do well, WH3 probably won't have a future and that will be the end. - They are super lucky that this DLC is about the Empire and everyone is super thirsty for new empire content.
like you increase price by like 150% but give 0 extra quanity in dlc. At least from now one if they care dlc should be around 110% more than any other.
@@Diego000793this is so frustrating. It’s like when Disney decided drawn animation wasn’t profitable and just abandoned it. Ca will just release a Bad dlc, overprice it and be like “well people are tired of wh3”

They are going to put more work into WH in my opinion.
yep. exactly my take away. we'll see in February what this "extra content" will look like for Shadows of Change, will just keep playing cyberpunk in the meantime.
I think it's a nicely written note. But I'm not going to sing CA's praises until those changes come into effect and once they actually maintain their new attitude after the heat dies down. EDIT: After reading Legend's community post where he brought up similar drama that happened back around Rome 2 (which I didn't know about because I wasn't really following CA/TW-related news as close as I am right now), I've reconsidered my stance. I'm not going to assume any 'good intentions' until they actually make good on those promises and maintain good practices. They got me, I admit. They suckered me in and made me drop my guard.
I commented on Great Book of Grudges' response to this with a similar sentiment to what you said here and somebody had already responded to me defending CA.
Changes only happens once the leadership is changed. These people are responsible for millions of dollars wasted on hyenas and pharaoh, incompetence should be properly punished. They fire hundreds of low level workers, but the incompetent leadership responsible for endless failure don't get any punishment. It's unjust.
@@rawpotatofella9654 Maybe I'm being a little bit too naive, but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt (again, I'm probably being too naive about this given what happened in the past few months) and assume that it was written with good intentions and that the emotional blackmail wasn't intentional. That's what I'm going to assume for now. If there is improvement and they stick to those sentiments and actually improve after all this barrage of drama, then I'm going to give them big thumbs up and I think everyone will be happy and benefit from the "new and improved" CA. If not, then we'll all know that they were just full of shit (again) and this was just another attempt at damage control before things fully get out of control.
"We make games to bring you joy, inspire a love of history, of fantasy and strategy games." This might be true of the engineers and artists. It is *not* true of senior leadership, who have the same goal as every other for-profit corporation: "We make games to make as much money as possible from you."
Please name a company who's senior leadership does NOT want to make loads of money. Your statement is completely obvious and only serves as a non-sequitur.
Agreed. I have no doubt that the artists and engineers are sincere in trying to entertain/create a good gaming experience, but I think Pharoah is just another example of art mingling with the worst aspects of business. Games are treated like assembly line products and rushed out without regard for the players satisfaction or the well-being of employees, but with the intention of being just good enough to turn a quick profit in time for the next scheduled project. Art ain't like other products or services: each project takes time, passion, meticulous care, a well put together and managed creative team, along with a host of other things going its way in order to get something worth-while, but unfortunately that costs a lot of money and time, both of which are things businesspeople like to pretend they don't have.
Oh right, the poor virtuous artists and engineers that aren’t tempted by such worldly desires like the holy mary! I hate people like you, they’re not any different, everyone wants to make money

I can't put my finger on it but something is really off about Pharaoh. I'm a massive Ancient Egypt nerd that's been playing TW for over 20 years. The number of Ancient Egypt games are few and ones that are even half-decent are very far between, so I should have been among the first to pre-order. I should be sitting here stroking my giant phallus with one hand while slaughtering Hittites for the glory of the Aten with the other but somehow this game has completely failed to get me interested. That's a Ptah-Sokar-Osiris joke btw, and the travesty of being left out is not the reason. I AM EXACTLY THE TARGET MARKET FOR THIS GAME. So why do I have so little interest in it? That's the real question I think CA should be asking themselves. If they can't even get Ancient Egypt nerds excited for a TW set in Ancient Egypt, is it really any surprise that sales were so low?
if they develop it more towards some kind of total war: bronze age and with some small reworks, for example making battles better and including some other unit types.
All 11 fan boys who praised it? Even if you don't think it's awful, you're objectively wrong if you think it's anywhere near as good as peak historical total war games. Those days are long past.
Damage control mode letter. I have a feeling Sega stepped in and forced them to refund to save face and issue an apology. Don't forget how they tried to blackmail players into buying the latest TWW 3 DLC. If it doesn't sell well they will drop support for the game. Their true face has been revealed a long time ago and shouldn't be forgiven easily, they need to show they are listening and improving.
I mean, they removed the Dynasty edition of Pharaoh, clearly indicating they're dropping it. I already bought the Dynasty edition though, so how do I get a refund if I didn't buy it through Steam? Something that really bugs me that I haven't seen anyone address is that most of the factions in the Warhammer Total War series have unique warhorns that sound when you issue orders or when units rout or rally, *EXCEPT THE WARHAMMER III FACTIONS* . It's actually my biggest gripe about Warhammer 3 and not that big of a deal to implement. _Where are the unique Warhorns Creative Assembly?!_
I scanned a lot of this bc it's basic "we're sorry, we'll do better" but then got to how they're going to add value to SoC and delaying ToD to do the same and these seem like really great steps in the right direction. I guess we'll see how well they can follow through.
I was also glad to see their parent company (Say-guh) encourage them to refocus on the strategy game side of things and repair customer relations. Hopefully we'll be seeing a second wind for the TW series as a whole now that CA is working on what it's best at.
Their choice to "add value" to shadows of change rather than reduce the price tells me everything I need to know about this letter... they're throwing out cheap talk hoping to get a few more dlc sales by promising new features.
@@bigquazz3955 It isn't a good idea in general to reduce the price after the fact. People who bought early just feel cheated and demand refunds and people who are thinking about buying hold off because they think the price might drop further. Adding value is almost always the way to go.

We went past the last chance saloon when they ditched the fambase for Total War garbage. Stop trying to give them more chances. They don't deserve them. Let them actually make a good game before even considering forgiveness.
I think the issue is SEGA. I only think this because of what happened over at Relic with company of heroes 3. Pretty much same story with similar circumstances. SEGA must be pushing for releases with short dev time and maximum profit
I am really grateful that there are prominent people out there who call out corporations like this for their bullshit and their utter disregard for the quality of the products they have pushed out lately. I truly think that people like you make the community a lot better. Thank you Legend!
The fact they are the ones who pointed out words are cheap and we'll only buy their BS after seeing it in action goes to show, this is pretty much their last shot. as much as there are more factions i want to see, they need to focus on fixing the bugs and bringing the game back up to the state it was at for TW:W2 before they do anymore DLCs. the fact that we need to GET BACK to that state of polish at all is really telling on how bad things are for them. then we can have a discussion on the price of future dlc's. we need to see good faith efforts and dedicated teams.
Well, they say the first step to change is to acknowledge your mistakes. But actions will speak louder than words and we will need to hold them accountable for what will happen next
Props as always, Legend. Love hearing your perspective on things because I know you'll say things for what they really are. 5:28 That's what pisses me off the most. The immature/condescending response towards people as if they are not allowed to act out in anger as if it is beneath them is the most asinine thing imaginable. 5:39 hit the nail on the head, the attitude of don't react and it will be okay is mental. I honestly feel a lot of people cannot handle people raising their voice let alone saying a few hurty words in an angry term and so they completely ignore a service and only listen to so called "positive-vibes" in their own bubble - leading to increased delusion. This doesn't only go for games, but for a generation as a whole.
I guess my overarching point was that is do not suppress anger. It is a completely normal emotion and the rational reaction is to question why individuals are angry, not to condescend, ignore, and ostracize them. This plays hand in hand with criticism.
Getting angry at games is a sign of immaturity. That is the alpha and omega on the entire subject. Anyone that thinks otherwise is part of the problem, not the solution. Games are for entertainment.. everyone is going to experience media they don't like.. the only answer is if you don't like it, simply move on. As my father so aptly put years back, HOW you deliver criticism is MORE important than the criticism itself. Act angrily and folks won't listen, pure and simple. If you don't know this at this point, you're lost. I applaud Creative Assembly for keeping that part under control. Anger expressed on forum boards should NEVER be tolerated. EVER.
@@rbarnes4076 Are you more fearful of the angry individual or the person who pretends to be above the rest for the sake of moral superiority? I will re-iterate, anger is a completely normal emotion and expression. Those who state otherwise are immature themselves because they have suppressed it to the point they are lying to themselves or they had cases in their life where they could never properly vent their frustration - leading to outbursts of toddler behaviour.
Get in legend, very well spoken about all the bullshit price rises. Especially when its not just with creative assembley but almost every company is pumping out crap for high prices
I see his comments about Pharaoh as them signalling that they are going to abandon it after they release the campaign update as apparently a lot of what they'll need to do it is already in the game files. It just has to be activated. So this likely is not a lot of extra work to complete. He was very wishy-washy on other specifics and the game only be getting some periodic updates which, to me, sounds like they are putting the game on life support, much like Thrones and Troy (if a bug is found they'll fix it, and nothing more). It only has 100 more players than their previous Saga games, and even with the price decrease, I don't see them improving that player count. So, they'll finish the work they've been working on now and then they'll just abandon it. The game is dead. No reason to waste any more good money on a bad investment.
Good that they acknowledge that they made mistakes, now we just need to see if it is the same mistakes as what the community saw. I still haven't bought Shadows of Change, and probably won't until I see the changes they're going to make to it. Far as I'm concerned, they still have to rebuild our trust in them, and that means actually going through with the things they promise here.
Pharaoh feels like a campaign pack instead of a game. If they had made bronze age total war and then sold Troy and Pharaoh as campaign packs, I'd be much more interested.
You may have had to bite the bullet with the partnership programme, but there's a reason we all don't follow the channels that are sycophants for CA. if I wanted to listen to CA marketing, I'd go to their channel. I think that this is FINALLY a step in the right direction. Emphasis on the STEP. It remains to be seen if they actually change or do anything they say in this post.
I say don't let up. The moment you look away, all the motivation to do better by their consumers vanishes and they go right back to degrading quality and screwing over their consumers. Don't start calling victory or handing out praise until we see tangible results.
Anybody can say anything they want. Politicians do it all the time. If they can back it up with actions then I will change my mind about CA. Until then, guilty until proven innocent.

Honestly a good statement. They apologized and the leadership owned up to it which is very rare. Obviously will have to see if they followed through, but this is a far cry from the Rob Bartholomew post.
@awhellnah__ Right. If this community falls for some basic corporate speak, then why even bother complaining? They will 100% not lower the price of the DLCs. I decided not to do a video on this because there's... not much here, yet. Seems like they're going to brainstorm what might satisfy the Shadows of Change owners and future Thrones of Decay purchasers and then have to run things by the suits, Games Workshop, Sega.. well, I hope they get something good. I'm hearing about a lot of good ideas for the Dwarfs from the fan base, for instance. There is a hunger for a big update. I just hope CA can feed that hunger adequately in the coming months.
Not everything said is said 100% right but from what have been told us so far this answer seems righter. I'm nothing but a casual total war fan. I have tried all types of total wars and multiple strategies. Thus I can say strategies especially recently have problems with giving us a product that is both fairly priced and enjoyable in long term. Although what CA has done had completely went even beyond that. Hopefully what they promised will be executed with care and their promises fulfilled. I hope their next new total war will actually bring back the joy and setting we players are looking for. I hope one day we will receive Total War Ages, a whole combination of all historical games in one, maybe, maybe one day.
Just LinkedIn-stalked Mike Simpson, and he has indeed left the company this month: "I'm just stepping out to take a sabbatical, digesting my time at CA to distil out what is worth sharing."
To be fair to them, the "it breaks our heart" line is probably just intended to mean that they aren't unfeeling about this. It is possible for them to be heartbroken about it without it being the community's fault.
I got to meet Rich Aldridge during the release for one of the DLCs and he is a passionate warhammer fan who just wants to make the game as good as it can be, and has his hands tied by resourcing and budgets imposed from elsewhere.
Of course, its a corporation, no one is responsible for bad decisions. Management has to answer to the owners and shareholders, the shareholders blame the market, the staff on the floor blames the management, and everyone can jolly keep fucking everything up without feeling bad about it because its not their fault is it? This kind of reasoning is stupid. Everyone who worked at CA during this time is responsible. The janitor too.
My biggest problem with Pharaoh is that it is clearly a game that is chopped up. They are going to sell the rest of the game in the form of different factions for $20 a price. All things that should have been a part of the base game.

The good: they acknowledge their mistakes
The bad: the latest games
It's funny how i was giving the same answer, than noticed we've the same profile picture too :'D
"Salute the Aces of Razgriz!"
They only acknowledge because of total failure of sales they dont give a fuck about our opionions. If they still do enough money.
Prepare for the worst
I'm still convinced the only thing they are really sorry about is the lost revenue. It's a fine letter and a step in the right direction but talk is cheap, just as the Total War leadership team taught us themselves.
Exactly! I'm not buying into this "this time we'll really change for real!!!!" thing...
Indeed...talk is cheap, but if actions follow then 👏
In an age of ChatGPT it takes more than a letter in corporate speech that is probably AI made to convince me.
to be honest the time it took them to come up with a chat gtp answer shows that they arent really honest about it
To be fair it's a clear indicator for us, the players that we can move the whole company if we just stop spending money on their product. It's not the worst case scenario IF (and it's a really really big IF) they go to the right direction after this. The end result should be the same if they aren't stupid, which is fine by me. As long as i get good game idc if the executives swim in yachts.

Toxic CA .

If you read between the lines:
- Thrones of Decay was supposed to be in the scale of Shadows of Change
- the price remains the same but now they are panicking and packing in extra content

@@Diego000793 well, they did gave us a roadmap with at least one more DLC down the line, it is their golden goose despite all the issues and controversy, and maybe they have some deal with Games Workshop to follow on that front.
Respectfully disagree. It’s riddled with emotional blackmail. Until they demonstrate change I won’t be giving a cent to CA.
They need to fix their damn engine and tech debt until they start selling anything, imo.
"We make games to bring you joy, inspire a love of history, of fantasy and strategy games." This might be true of the engineers and artists. It is *not* true of senior leadership, who have the same goal as every other for-profit corporation: "We make games to make as much money as possible from you."
the opening of this message is so insincere is wild
True but isn’t that the goal of every company?

If they can't even get Ancient Egypt nerds excited for a TW set in Ancient Egypt, is it really any surprise that sales were so low?

it is amazing it took them this long to say SORRY. I still don't trust them until they let go of people who should go.
Definitely gaslighting their customers
A very good analysis, and i totally share it.

@@Garrett2101literally😭😭 look CA is a hoe but the melodrama that comes out of gamers is insane
That started so 'marketing department' that I was surprised at the actual decent actions later in the post. Hope CA comes through for us!
I really appreciate your bit about the actual dev team and the community managers having no decision power and therefore, deserve no anger.
Honestly a good statement. They apologized and the leadership owned up to it which is very rare. Obviously will have to see if they followed through, but this is a far cry from the Rob Bartholomew post.
@awhellnah__ They raised the DLC prices today after posting this?
@@Koranthuswe will see if they lower them back to what it was before. I doubt it.
@awhellnah__ Right. If this community falls for some basic corporate speak, then why even bother complaining? They will 100% not lower the price of the DLCs. But they will say a note saying they "hear us" and "will do better". Sure. We will get the same mediocre games with reused asset carbon-copies with over priced DLC, that much is clear
Talk is cheap, they have earned no good will from me.
@awhellnah__ youre honestly the reason why i dont think companies should bother with even trying to make up for mistakes, because itll never be enough.
when they do, you guys will just find the next milestone to latch onto, then the next, then the next.
now im no staunch defender for the company or game, i enjoy wh3 and i couldnt care less about the backlash theyre recieving as i get peoples point. however you are the kinda worst people who will just never be satisfied.
Thanks Legend for talking true, always.
How it translates "Ok, we fucked up, but this time I SWEAR it will be different baby!"
I appreciate your unfiltered candor. Keep up the good work.
I remember asking my mom to buy me a copy of medieval 1 on the shelf at wal mart when I was 6 or 7
Seeing how the series developed..almost like how all popular franchises developed. It went from “How much can we make for more ($$)? “ to “how much more ($$) can we make??”
I tried Old World mod after all the talking about it on stream today and OMG Albion is a Thunder Dome of Pain on Legendary!! You need to give it a go Legend
We don’t want more drama.
We don’t want more emotion.
We want Medieval 3
Shogun 3 as well.
And Napoleon/Empire 3 !
Like you said they need to do actions. And not just this time, keep doing the right thing without having to learn this lesson again
The first thing I did when I got the bottom of this post, was copy and paste them all the names in a notepad document and saved it. So I if I ever see those again, I know to run the other way.
Thank you, CA. Now that's the transparence I like to see.
Can always count on the Legend Red Pill, to stay on the up and up.
To be fair to them, the "it breaks our heart" line is probably just intended to mean that they aren't unfeeling about this. It is possible for them to be heartbroken about it without it being the community's fault.
Exactly: they could easily be saying "We're heartbroken that we've screwed up so badly as to make this happen".
@@TheSuperappelflapthis is a great take. No one's responsible & everyone's responsible at the same time.
The "Emotional Blackmail" is usually called gaslighting.
We see the confusion... they have not learnt their lesson, we are not confused we are just rightly pissed off.
Hell must have frozen over.
My biggest problem with Pharaoh is that it is clearly a game that is chopped up. They are going to sell the rest of the game in the form of different factions for $20 a price. All things that should have been a part of the base game.
They did the same thing with Troy, Warhammer....
They became very greedy and the fanbase had enough
@@cav0960 True, they dont care about us, which is why the community needs to boycott all their games and not give them a penny until they make an Empire 2, Medieval 3 and Rome 3.
I will finally be at peace if they make one of these
I'd pay full price for the Dicks of Slaanesh DLC we probably shouldn't give them ideas
The video ive been waiting all day for lmao
