In the first clue for "cuckoo" if the clue giver were to say the word in a sort of song like "Bir-her-her-her-herd" (sounding like a cuckoo clock) that might have worked.
For "underwear" I would think "skivvies" (I just confirmed with Google - that would have been the perfect clue - a direct synonym).
