      🌺Quick question. I only have 3/4C of almond milk left and no raw almonds to make more. If I add coconut milk or cream, will that make it taste significantly different?

    Ask an asian and you'll hear different methods 😅 having a rice cooker is the best solution. But very great advise! 👏👏👏

      Having a rice cooker definitely helps if you have one! But if you ever find yourself without one - this stovetop method is key.

      Asia is a large continent. Every country and region has their own method. We the Hispanics have another and lisa is pretty much on point with her rice 🍚, the way we like it.
      Some asians cook awful rice they're not all "experts".

      @@Downshiftology I like Lisa's wise response. It's all about how things work the best with given situation. While I love all different tech-savvy rice cookers (some of them talks to you these days), this stovetop method could be useful for situations like camping, making small amount of steamed rice, etc.

      I’m asian and before rice cookers, we cooked rice in a pot. That’s why you will find many Asian people cooking rice in a Dutch oven. Rice cookers are efficient and fast but not necessary.

      @@J21822 I agree. I'm not Asian but I do rice the traditional Korean way. In a dol sat Al bap pot. It's way easier than a rice cooker to me because I know what I'm doing instead of dumping in a machine

    THANK YOU for showing white rice some love. I have Crohn's Disease. I've tried incorporating brown rice into my diet many times over the past 12 years since my diagnosis, but it just doesn't agree with me. It's frustrating when bloggers (and nutritionists, even!) make blanket statements about brown rice being "better." Luckily I'm old enough now to know that I should just eat what feels right for my body, but my wisdom is hard earned!

      Brown rice does not agree with my digestive system. It's okay to have white rice !!!

    where i live (colombia) rice is such an important part of the food, almost every day we eat rice, we buy pounds for only a month and with that you can do nice meals, desserts, rice flour, rice milk and everything you think of.
    we cook white large grain rice with absorption method.
    here’s the recipe:
    -you put two and a half of water in a pot
    -ad the rice
    -medium heat
    - ad two or three spoons of olive oil or any oil you like, this is the key for non sticky or gummy rice
    - put one glove of garlic fine chopped(for flavor and better texture)
    - ad a spoon of salt
    - mix it evenly
    -let it cook for about seven minutes
    - when those seven minutes past it should look with less water and it’s gonna be boiling , that’s the time where you put the lid on an turn the heat to low
    - open the lid five minutes after putting on the lid an stir nicely the rice -important step-(time can be different depending in the texture you want)
    - now it’s done and you have a really tasty, flavorful and nutritious rice.
    you can change the garlic with any condiments you like such as rosemary, parsley, ginger, etc.
    i personally like to use some sunflower seed oil for the rice, it ads up so much flavor.
    you can add some corn to the rice when it’s finally cooked for sunrise-rice, or when it’s boiling you can ad chickpeas and carrots and you have a nice combination.

    I cook rice in the rice cooker and I make sure before I cook rice, wash & rinse first. I use the cooked rice for biryani, fried rice & rice pudding. Love your tips and instructions.

    God bless you! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had mushy rice. I can cook most things very well. But I’ve always struggled w basis white rice. Thank you for this helpful video. It’s my go to reference going forward. 🙏🏽😇

    Whoa this pasta method is life-changing. I love rice but hardly ever make it because I hate measuring and trying to remember the ratios for different types of rice. Also excited to try the cilantro/lime rice recipe! Your videos are amazing - thank you!!

      Yes! You'll definitely need to try the pasta method next. It's much easier in my opinion and you can carefully watch how your rice cooks til it reaches the consistency that you want. Can't wait for you to try the cilantro lime rice :)

      The easiest way to get perfect rice is to boil it for exactly 8 minutes. Take the water out and steam the rice with the lit on for 15 minutes. Shake the pan a few times after you take the water out. Trust me! It's the best way. Foolproof. You do not have to taste the rice at all and it doesn't get sticky. This works only for white and brown rice tho. Long grain rice like Basmati is 10 minutes boil and 10 minutes steam.

    This is how I was thought before we had our rice cooker.
    Put rice in a pot and add water. Without measurement cups, just put the tip of your middle finger on top of the rice and add water until the first line of your middle finger.
    Let it boil and simmer without lid until the water dries up. Next, put the lid on and put your burner to the lowest setting and let it simmer for 8-10 mins (depends on the variety of rice you're using).
    After, turn off the flame and let it sit for another 10 mins with the lid on so the rice will continue to cook on the residual heat.

    Ive been looking forward to this video the past few days! Thanks Lisa, I can’t wait to try your rice drink recipe! In China, one of the popular rice dishes is fried rice. We stir fry cooked or left over rice with eggs, veggies, shrimp, ...Which is one of my kid’s faves :)

    In Brazil rice is the base of our meals (lunch and dinner, mostly), most people have it everyday. We make it with fried garlic and/or onions, it gives it a delicious flavor. I personally like to add cumin to my rice, it makes it so delicious. Great video!

    I have enjoyed Lundberg rice for while, the wild rice blend was in the bulk bin at my local whole foods. I usually enjoy it with rack of lamb & Brussels sprouts. (This fall & winter season was great for my local farmer to harvest purple Brussels sprouts & broccoli.)

    Indians as you may know are major rice eaters especially in the south or eastern part of the country. I am from the east of India and we Bengalis love to cook our rice by what you call the "pasta method"... I personally find it so much more convenient than the absorption method!!!     Third method: white rice cooks in just one minute in an electric pressure cooking for firm (for fried rice frying, for example), or in 4 to 6 for tender. Makes rice a much more practical side dish!
    (BTW, I replaced my non-stick insert pot with a stainless steel one, which makes me feel better...)

      Hi James - Using an electric pressure cooker is definitely one way to cook your rice! And if you ever need to cook it on the stovetop for any reason, the method in this video works every time. Oh great! Stainless steel continues to be my favorite type of cookware to use.

    Great video Lisa! As someone with Indian heritage I find myself missing rice if I don't eat it for a few days. I have such fond memories of my mother feeding me mushy rice mixed with yoghurt and ghee when I was sick as a child... I rarely eat that now but even the thinking about it takes me back 25 years!     I am loving all of your videos. I saw your first video on May 24th or 25th of this year. When I saw your pantry video I wanted mines that organized. Sadly they are out of the Weck Cylindrical Jars on amazon and the Weck website says they are out of stock until approximately 7/1/2020. The GlassLock containers are also out on amazon. I was able to order them and will ship as soon as they have them. Thank you for your beautiful videos, the music is right, I love the editing, and your shots are amazing. I would get so frustrated when I cook and part of it was not having the proper tools. So thank you again. I know this was the rice video but my comments are about all your videos.

    My family is from Haiti and rice is a staple. We use a caldero style pot and depending on the rice other ingredients can go in. Beans and peas are favorites. I do want to try the horchata recipe though so thanks for sharing.

    I love mediterranean herb + hot, sweet, savory sauce + scrambled eggs cooked in biryani (basmati rice) style with crunch of chopped veggies.
    It's so damn aromatic and addictive.

    I'm a Chinese, I’ve tried a lot of ways to cook rice, steaming is the best way which can fully keep the texture and flavor of rice.

      Steaming is not boiling. Put washed rice into a glass bowl with some water a little less than boiling and put the bowl on a steamer.Use high heat steam to cook rice for about 25 minute then you can enjoy your beautiful chewy rice, totally different from the boiling one.

    Another favorite is basmati or aromatic rice tempered with roasted cumin seeds and chilli flakes in "ghee" clarified butter... Served with curry style red kidney or black eyed beans or bengal gram.

    First of all, leaving rice out un-refrigerated is no joke. Had the worst food poisoning from white rice left on the counter too long.
    Second, my asian mom used to always wash the rice by hand, because she said it would give a little love to each grain.

    I think almost every Asian owns a rice cooker nowadays, but before rice cooker people cooked rice with steaming method here in my country. Soooo interesting seeing various methods to cook it, also really fun to see various recipes with this one ingredient from all over the world! For instance, I would never ever imagine putting lime juice in rice but it seems usual in Mexican dish and looks super yummy too!

    Good video! I just wanted to suggest especially for the basmati rice the first method (absorption) since every brand changes a little so the measure does not work every single time. So after you wash the rice put it in the pan take a fork and when adding the water move the fork in the rice from the sides to the center all around. This way the rice absorbs a little bit of water The rice at the center has to stay just like 1 millimetre under the water. So you see it but does not come over the water. This works ALWAYS whatever brand you choose. For the rest follow the steps of the video. Cook for a little less than 15min because when you’ll put on the lid it will still cook a little bit. Hope my comment is clear.

      It's a method I tend to use frequently as I can watch the rice as it cooks and see when it's done 😊

    The second method, boiling in abundant water, is the only one that i use and that makes sense to me.
    The first method has too many variables that could cause the end result to be a disaster or just a poor result.
    The variables are: the type of rice, how strong is the flame of the stove top, the pot size, shape and thickness of the bottom, how much you wash and hydrate the rice, the ambient temp and humidity... and more. All these variables could cause an incorrect absorption of the water and it could end up burnt on the bottom or soggy.
    Meanwhile with the second method you ALWAYS get an OK result, maybe not great and fluffy like when you NAIL the first method exactly, but really, who cares, this type of rice is just a side that you use with the main dish (usually spicy) and doesnt need to be PERFECT.
    Then you have the rice cooker which we could consider the optimal method, but personally i make this kind of rice like once a month (95% of the time when i eat rice i make risotto, but im also a Northern Italian and that's kind of our specialty), and i dont want anothtr big appliance taking up space in the kitchen, not to mention that the cheap rice cookers arent giving you a much better result than the second method, to really make a difference you need one of those fuzzy logic based rice cookers which are even bigger and expensive like the zojirushi and such.

    If you eat rice often e.g. on a daily basis, nothing beats a rice cooker for ease and accuracy. Nothing against traditional rice cooking. My mom used to do it when I was young !!!

    About the famous basmati rice - so delicate and aromatic - being a newbie and fearing I would never be able to match the level of perfection of others, I found that the basmati rice turns out wonderfully cooking it "pasta style". Just watch it and test it for each batch. I now cook the Uncle Ben's converted rice this way too most of the time - simple, and perfect mouth feel every time. Just boil in water same as pasta, watch it, test it, then drain the water and fluff and adorn and eat.

    If your pot has pour spouts at the side and doesn’t seal fully a good tip is to cover it with foil. This helps keep in the steam which helps cook the rice for method 1 shown here.

    I love white rice! And yes you are right! White rice is much lighter than brown but to lower the glycemic index, I cook it with coconut oil and I have to cool it down and put in the fridge 🤣 That’s the only way I can avoid it hahaha Been doing it for many years and also when I was in the Philippines, because we were so poor, we cook our rice in a stone or they call it clay pot omg the rice taste soooooo good! Since it’s hard to find one here, I went to a korean store to buy their stone pot where they cook their soup hahaha omg my rice taste soooo good!

      Coconut oil is a great way to add a bit of flavor to rice! And yes - a stone pot gives such a delicious texture to the rice. I definitely need to invest in one next time :)

    Hi Lisa ! The second method is called creole rice , as it is the way rice is cooked in the Caribbean, at least Martinique and Guadeloupe. I've only known this way of cooking, until a friend of mine who's Vietnamese showed me the way to cook Thai rice perfect each time ! Say yes to beautifully scented, and soft rice

    For the horchata, you have to soak the rice with warm water overnight before blending!!!😊 Im Mexican , I know 😊😊😊😊

    I've always cooked rice like pasta because it's the method my grandma and my mom taught me and tbh it never fails! Rice keeps cooking after strained so I prefer to take it out of the water more like "al dente" consistency and then after strained, I immediately put it in a big baking pan so it cools faster. My favorite rice is with melted butter and cheese on top =)

    Hi i found the same ratio of water/rice sufficient for my basmati or jasmine rice. I add a pinch of salt and few drops of olive oil too. After bringing to boil then 25 - 30 minutes of undisturbed cooking on lowest heat with lid on is a must :)

      Salt and olive oil will definitely give it a perfect amount of flavor to it. And great! That's always a solid way to cook rice, aside from the pasta method.

    Cilantro lime rice is so tasty! By the way, I also have all-clad stainless steel pots and have had them for years, simply the best. I know this a video is about rice, but I do want to mention I always make your mayo recipe from a couple years ago! I never bought mayo again. Do you have a recipe for homemade ketchup?

    I must say that I love every recipe you share. They are fantastic and delicious. I know because I’ve made a few of them.
    I apologize if i sound rude but horchata isn’t only from Mexico.There’s other Latin-America countries that make this drink as well. There’s many variations. Another thing that I wanted to point out is that the word carnita doesn’t not mean pork. The word for pork is cerdo or puerco. The word carnitas is a diminutive of the word carne which means meat in general. Don’t have any clue why this word is use for pork meat
