- Introducing my first impressions of the Baic B40 4x4 - and its from China. @BAICglobal have introduced the B40 Plus into the South African Market. This is one of those vehicles that draws a lot of attention when you are driving and a lot of South Africans cant help but come and ask you about it.
I drove the City Hunter variant, which comes with a 2L Turbo Petrol engine (From the Golf GTI) and its performance was pretty astounding. Nervous about a large Petrol vehicle, I was actually blown away by its consumption (When driven calmly).
The petrol engine kicks out 160kW at 5500 r/min while the diesel pushes out 110kW at 4000 r/min and 350Nm of torque between 1800 r/min and 2800 r/min.
The BAIC B40 Plus range starts from R549 500 and goes up to R629 500 for the top-of-the-range offering.
Overall I was incredibly impressed in my first 2 days driving the B40. While it is an off-road vehicle - and yes it strongly resembles the Jeep - it comes with incredible luxury and comfort. This together with a great drive and solid off-road capabilities make it an impressive choice for anyone looking for a daily drive, 4x4.

Nice review. I bought the 8 speed 3 months ago. Bloody amazing. Owned two brand new Jeep wranglers before this BJ40. What value for money
Have to agree, the new 8 speed is incredible.
Kai, a long way to go you have regarding 4WD & auto reviews but enjoyed you out of ya element just a little lol. I won't bag/belittle the Chinese vehicle manufacturers but here in Australia I have seen many rust where panels are bolted to body due to the lack of understanding and the life these vehicles have near the Ocean. Just be cautious of what you put out there Big fella!!!! Love ya work and keen for another winter surfing series ASAP

The engines in the BJ40 are SAAB engines, not VW Golf GTi.
The x55 is SAAB

That is a lot of money for a fong kong wrangler! Would rather save a R100k and buy the 4x4 Mahindra Scorpio N. And if Mahindra brought the Thar here, I would take that!
Need to do a proper off road test. I haven’t tested mine yet.
its not a volkswagen gti engine. its a saab engine....
The Saab engine is in the x55 suv
Would you please tell me (if you know) if there is an identical suspension system in another car that we can use.

Hi, did not buy it but have since driven the new version with an 8 speed gearbox. It’s an incredible improvement on performance and gearing. All in all a fantastic car for the price when you compare to Jeep at twice the price.

FYI ..... Picked up my new car . I went for the Champion B40 with the 8speed gearbox , very happy 😊
