Probably my favorite composer of all. Godowsky used to play this MacDowell piece as an encore with great charm.

@@Bruceykeys The essentials of MacDowell are the 12 Virtuoso Ètudes Op. 46, the 2nd Piano Concerto in D minor Op. 23, and all 4 of his programmatic sonatas, (Opuses 45, 50, 57 and 59), of which the last two, Op. 57 "Norse" and 59 "Keltic" were dedicated to Grieg.
For the 2nd Concerto, recordings recommended: either the studio recording from Van Cliburn with Walter Hendl (1960), the live recording from André Watts with Leopold Stokowski (1966), or another studio one from Earl Wild and Massimo Freccia (1967). There's also of course, Jesús Maria Sanromá's recording with Arthur Fiedler (1934), which is an excellent interpretation, but it's an old(er) recording.
For the 12 Virtuoso Ètudes, the American pianist Malcolm Frager recorded all of them; there's also recordings of the 2nd ètude "Moto Perpetuo" (Op. 46/2) alone by myself, and more importantly, André Watts. Busoni's pupil Rudolf Ganz also performed a few of the études (Nos. 4 "Improvisation" and 10 "March Wind").
Finally, for the sonatas, Constance Keene is the one to beat. Especially for Op. 59 "Keltic", where the inspiration of Liszt AND the clarity of the programmatic content is vividly projected.
