“American Gods” has been canceled at Starz.
The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name will not return for a fourth season. However, sources tell Variety that the network is open to a potential event series or movie to wrap up any loose ends.
“American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” a spokesperson for Starz said in a statement.
Sources say the decision not to continue with a fourth season was made due to low viewership, with multiplatform viewership declining 65% from the show’s first season to its third.
“American Gods” stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon and Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday. After a chance meeting following Shadow’s release from prison, Shadow agrees to become Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard and soon finds himself in a new world where magic is real and a war looms between the Old Gods and the New Gods.
“American Gods” had four showrunners over its three seasons, with original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green leaving after clashing with producer Fremantle. Jesse Alexander took over during Season 2 as Gaiman became more involved in the show’s production, causing a two-year delay between Season 1 and Season 2. Charles “Chic” Eglee was the showrunner for the third season, when Orlando Jones, who played Mr. Nancy, claimed that he was fired from the show because his character was “the wrong message for Black America.” The show also recently dropped Marilyn Manson from a recurring role in the third season following abuse allegations.
“American Gods” is produced by Living Dead Guy, J.A. Green Construction Corp., The Blank Corporation, Fremantle North America and Starz Originals.

Mad Sweeney was at least supposed to die, it’s in the book and while Mr. Nancy isn’t in the book as much and dies near the end, the first two seasons of the show built him up as a relevant character, like they did with Biliquis.
@@Auron1Roxas2 They botched it incredibly bad with both characters. They built them both up and then took them both out with no pay off..The story of Mad Sweeney with Odin/Balor was brilliant! Sweeney finally realizing he's a major player in the pantheon of deities was genius. Anansi (in my mind) was building to something big. Especially with Bilquis and Ibis (and possibly Anubis). They had so much room to do literally anything and they blew it. I know Pablo Schreiber (Sweeney) left because he got the role of Master Chief in Halo. But dropping Nansi (Orlando Jones) because they thought his characters message was bad for black Americans was the bullet that killed the show. I bought the first two seasons on DVD just so my mother could watch them and she loved it. She watched the 3rd season and had to ask me countless questions because it didn't make sense. 😓

He was the best part PERIOD 🙄 This show deserves what happened to it. Notice how all the best people didn't want nothing to do w/the show no more after a while anyway. But they did Orlando dirty. So screw 'em.

Ok, Season 3 was not bad, it wasn't season 1 good but it also wasn't riddled with the issues of season 2. It would have been better with Orlando though. They really brought out the arc of technical boy and also the Orisha storyline was just great.

I think the series would have been way better without them though, although I think the 3rd season was ok. Whittle's acting also showed so much improvement during the 2nd and 3rd season, 3rd season in particular.

Never looked back once I heard that Orlando wasn't in the show anymore. He was the only reason I watched. His character made me feel some type of way when he spoke. very powerful

I think the cancelled show says several things to the credit of Orlando Jones. Even though Mr. Nancy was a serious draw to the show, that made it that much more enjoyable to watch, Orlando was a huge artistic talent as a writer for the show and his skill brought the other characters to life which makes his contribution much larger than just his character. The show literally, lost its power to capture an audience after his writing was absent form creating the dynamic that was established in Seasons 1 & 2.
First of all, your argument doesn't make sense. He did not write anything in season 1 (he said so himself), and the viewership dropped the most between season 2 and 3, and Orlando had a bigger role in season 2, which then would mean by your argument that people peaced out because of Orlando Jones screwing up the series.

@@Camuale yeah, but the trend started during his time on the show, so using that argumentation, the only logical conclusion would be that he ruined the show. There is no other way around it, if you are hellbent on using that argument. I liked season 2 and 3, but I am not pretending as if Orlandos absence is the reason its cancelled, because during his time on the show, it saw the largest drop in real viewership numbers than during the 1st and 3rd.

You underestimate how pissed people were about it, truly. 😒 Season 3 was a real let down w/out him, and the numbers greatly declined during the season. A lot of people couldn't even get THROUGH season 3, that's how bad it all was. Orlando's presence was greatly missed...

Anansi & Sweeney are my two faves.
My two favorite characters were Anansi and Mad Sweeny. I also loved Bilquis, but it had very little to do with her acting. I digress. Their biggest twi mistakes were getting rid of Anansi and Sweeney.
They were literally the 2 most interesting and well expressed characters in the show .......BIG FACTS

Bro, Mr. Nanci was realy my top favourite god on the series! The way he talks in a mellow calm voice then changes into a very gruff, deep and scary voice just subtly shows how great he his for his character.

You could tell AG lost its edge after season 2. WTF are they doing. This show was amazing. Orlando Jones was as perfect a casting as RDJ to Iron Man. The whole vibe of the show altered. I watched Season 3 just out of curiosity & yeah, a lot of the parts were there, but it was an empty shell compared to it's Seasons 1 & 2 glory.
The show was likely really expensive to produce with it's special effects, so that, plus several key writers & actors walking away & the writing was already on the wall.
I found it "interesting" the focus they suddenly put on Bilquis, African gods, & slavery; spanning several episodes, as maybe to cover their tracks & not appear racist for axing one of their most vocal contributors, Orlando Jones 😏 ...but then you see exactly why his voice was so necessary.
That part came across as a high school theater production compared to the visceral, "nail on the head" analysis we would've gotten from a character like Mr. Nancy--which would've been PERFECT considering the year 2020 was with Black Lives Matter protests, etc. Don't start being all proactive now when you literally snuffed out the torch
While I would've like to have seen where they'd take the arc with Shadow finally becoming a god, many components just wouldn't balance out to make it feel like the series with so much potential it once was, so...Karma 🤷🏿♂️
I watched it too out of morbid curiosity. You on point., They threw in the black characters just to say they did it but it was empty as hell. They focused more on that alphabet agenda and it was extra heavy handed and forced into the plot. Like why the fuck does Salim exist?
I gave up when they fucked up Moon hair had him looking like he grew hair then permed it.
This is not karma. The moment they fired Brian Fuller and Michael Green that was the start of it. THEN, Orlando Jones who was clearly one of the best writers of the show got attacked by Starz and kicked him out. Big mistake. Huge mistake. Personally this show should just die. After the first season the show turned to shit and Starz knew it.

Funny thing is, I do not think everyone knows exactly where the headaches came from. It actually started with Neil Gaiman. He was not happy with the first original show runners direction of his art. Threaten to sue to get the rights he gave to produce show. Hence the 2nd set. He clashed with them, Orlando along with Starz. Then came chic. Well we know what happened there.

Hate to break it to you Jay but season 1 was full of nuance, politics, and truths and the show was a hit. They ran it into the ground trying to void those topics and lost their core audience, the subsequent ratings and any good will.

I doubt the Orlando Jones character would kept viewership. The show began declining on its 2nd season where he was most prominent. It's f*cked up that he was blindsided because his character was amazing but the show was far too expensive for Starz to keep both American Gods & Outlander.

The most irritating part is Mr. Nancy is all throughout the book to the end. I even listened to the audiobook version that Neil Gaiman wrote specifically for for Mr.Nancy ..so I know he was important. Then my question is was Mr.Gaiman a part of this? Doesn't make sense. Mr. Ibis and Mr. Anubis thoughts on humanity are just as scathing as Mr. Nancy's observations. That why I loved the book so much.
As an actor Orlando should be feeling for all the cast and crew out of work now, they had nothing to do with him being fired.

To me it's a bit of everything.
An artist work should be respected, ( Gaiman). HOWEVER, just as translation can cause "loss" of understanding of what's be conveyed, so can an artist's "vision" be misinterpreted.
Gaiman is known in Hollywood as an absolute artist. You want to bring his stories to life, you have to do it his way. And this is exactly what happened here.
As a commenter said below, the domino effect started with the firing of the original 1st show runners. The issue with them was, Gaiman was not happy with the direction/s they were going. They, Fuller and Green, were the ones who approached Orlando for assistance to write the "voices" of Nancy, anubis and mr iblis, considering, the political climate at the time. The show runners were sensitive to know, they could not afford to misrepresent these legendary characters.
Many will agree it was one of the better decisions made by Hollywood and it paid off. But when an artist, (Gaiman), becomes stubborn, obtuse, petulant, their behaviors and threats causes a toxic environment that implodes on its self. To the great satisfaction of Orlando Brown.

It's selfish of him to be happy. Now, all of those other brothers and sisters are out of work.

Mr Nansi was by far the best character, everyone else's motivation was either self serving or to pay of a debt of some kind, but Mr Nansi was so full of rage and vengeance for the way his people have been treated and he did it all with a smile. I was hoping for a "fuck these western gods" from him but we never got the chance to see it.
