They are not temporary registers ..You should understand and explain the students when they are used and why they are used as SP , LR and PC madam....please go through the data sheets ..
What will happen if main function call a sub routine and that sub routine calls another In that case the link register will be modified return address to the main will be gone
This is used only in ARM to avoid the stack which normally takes more time to access .Only in thumb mode it uses SP as you mentioned.Because ARM mode is different from thumb mode.
