I like the idea that instead of bigger crabs for the APC type siege crabs, turn them into siege lobsters they would have the same stats just they're a lobster now
Yea this is awesome. Finding a magic coral circlet in a second hand shop the wizard buys it and puts it on. She feels through the link this giant crab, severely damaged, in pain, all alone. It wants to live, to be useful to its master but it doesn't know where he went. She must find it, must help it, but the way is dangerous and she is not experienced enough to go on her own...perhaps she can find some decent adventurers in the tavern.
They are underpowered for the CR, so I might use it as a ticking clock objective of "find the commander". Or to stat out the giant lobster submarine I gave them a few sessions ago...
I honestly didn't realize that the siege crab wasn't already part of 5e. That's honestly crazy. I love this monster so much. It's such a fun monster/way of travel. I was actually part of a campaign where we got one as treasure to use for the rest of the campaign. We had to use it to fight against Myrmyxicus from the 3.0 Fiend Folio. That'd be a fun build to see done for 5e.
I wonder how much butter Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar author of "The Underworld Cookbook" in Magic The Gathering would need if she made something with a Siege Crab. That's also going to be A LOT of lemons.
For a story, maybe a side quest where the crab has escaped or it’s weilder died in an ambush and you are sent out to retrieve the crab but it’s agitated and attacking anything it sees

How about a hermit siege crab, with a siege tower for a shell? Or a platform for siege engines? The creatures masters could create a variety of "shells" for it to use in combat. Also, it'd be fun to have one that looks like the cabin of a ship for travelling.

A different take on the "Personnel Carrier" variant... rather than trying to be inside the crab, you put a howdah on its shell... there's enough room up there for troops, ballistae, you name it.
I don't actually see text in the google doc on your 5e conversion that says anything at all about the coral circlet, the wielder being able to see through the crab's senses, or anything else regarding it. Nor any mention of sending spells through it. Likewise, since nothing about the circlet is mentioned, it doesn't seem to name the kind of action required (if any) to command it. I suspect a section is missing.
a giant crab walks up to the city gates being pelted by Canon fire. it stops abruptly as it approaches the wall and raises its massive claws above its body and slowly let's them back down to its side as it shoots fireworks from its claws before studding off to never be seen again
Going to have my players discover half a coral crown in the ruins of a vault of a civilization that stole artifacts from others (think the British Museum), then give them a tip off that the other half is still in the Underdark somewhere and see if they want to go on a heist to complete it.
So reverse idea: there's a coastal city that wants to invade an underwater city because they have natural resources and capture crabs and raise them to be APC into underwater cities.
This would be a great monster for the Kua-Toa to use in a campaign with Dagon as the big bad. Maybe his forces come from the depths to claim the surface world, and one of these creatures comes up to show just how big the threat has become.
The crab could be in the battle, or could be the McGuffin the PCs are sent to retrieve to swing the tides of battle. Getting to drive this beast and slam it into the enemy's Giant Scary Thing menacing the gates would be a fun way to pay off a siege story, and letting the players temporarily punch above their level.

Imagine if after the ancient war, one Siege crab was abandoned in the lake [so the nemies cant use them or hijack them], for the army to take it back when it returns. But it never did. Insted milenia had passed and now in this cold and frigid land a human petty kingdoms life and wage war against each other. One of the kings recently got a new crown, given by an Archeologist, a court mage, an advisor or as a gift from a ambasador from a empire far away. This new crown happen to be ancient Coral Circlet. And now every time the petty king is doing war council and issuing order over the map, the lumbering beast hack through the bottom of the lake creating earthquakes for whole kingdom (perhaps the crab is under the capital). Proud King do not have the fainties idea what causing the earthquakes and continues to do so while plotting advisor or the far away empire observe the situation with a grin. Or perhaps the Coral Circlet was given as a geniue [or forced] gift from guild of archeologist and whole thing is just a mistake from lack of knowledge [or they want to destibilise kingdom and the tyranical king].
So the average crab has a shell thickness of .5 inches to an inch! also the average crab is 6" - 8" in diameter! So siege crabs are almost 20 feet in diameter, that would make the siege crab 30x larger than the average Dungeness crab. With that math, you could say that a siege crabs chitin shell would be about 15 inches thick. Soft wood can stop a 9mm shell with a thickness of 12 inches. therefore siege crabs could deflect 9mm bullets easily off of its shell, (it could vary depending on where the round strikes and the angle it strikes at.)
A seidge crab ether hauling an armored submarine esqe boat for additional troops and supplies or an armored money hauler crab for intelligent crap people or dragons or some other sea people would be on brand tbh

Can you imagine how many crab cakes you could make out of it? This sounds like a lotd or king sending the oarty out to hunt one of these down for their upcoming banquet so they can serve it to this guest. Also it species of crab should be Dugeon-ous Crab.
Great stats for reskinning. A drugar seige beetle. A drow seige spider. An ilithid seige..... something a brain perhaps (a pimped out ride for an elder brain). An ancient construct. Go wild.
Crabs scuttle, lobsters can swim. So a siege lobster is also going to be an anti-shipping asset. The troopship version (pun intended) with ten, a dozen troops aboard, that's a pirate submarine. Claw takes care of the rudder and any oars, then spells for any sails and the crew. Surface, and throw hooks. The boarding is going to be brutal, but if there is a second one with crossbow men(?) and more spells, you could climb under cover.... And yes, in my games, inserting with one time use featherfall items from a dragon has happened. "Three minutes out... One minute out, unhook... Over the LZ, get off my back!" with a barrel role.
Somewhat inconsequential question, but if it has four claws, how many other legs does it have? Crabs are decapods so they normally have ten legs, including 2 claws and 8 walking legs. Are the front two walking legs modified into claws or does it just have two extra limbs?

A Dragon Turtle is swimming off the coast of Waterdeep in somewhat contested "international waters" and has one of these doing hit and run tactics on the docks to weaken the city as a whole. Could have a mad tinker artificer build one. Just use the Lifecrafter "template" from the PlaneShift booklet from Kaladesh. Fun fun. Get nuts. A Coven of Druids..... hum CR12 may be out of the reach for a druid. But mass polymorph? Lmao Could use the armor or make the armor from flail snail shells from the underdark.... and their magical properties..... Yep. I think I just made this monster go from bad to worse.

Monster Manual III from 3.5 had some of the coolest aquatic monsters. It's one of my go to books whenever I'm putting together underwater combats.

Crabs scuttle, lobsters can swim. So a siege lobster is also going to be an anti-shipping asset. The troopship version (pun intended) with ten, a dozen troops aboard, that's a pirate submarine. Claw takes care of the rudder and any oars, then spells for any sails and the crew. Surface, and throw hooks. The boarding is going to be brutal, but if there is a second one with crossbow men(?) and more spells, you could climb under cover.... And yes, in my games, inserting with one time use featherfall items from a dragon has happened. "Three minutes out... One minute out, unhook... Over the LZ, get off my back!" with a barrel role.

Somewhat inconsequential question, but if it has four claws, how many other legs does it have? Crabs are decapods so they normally have ten legs, including 2 claws and 8 walking legs. Are the front two walking legs modified into claws or does it just have two extra limbs?
