This was great, Keith. Pricing is what so many builders struggle with. As you said, finding out the customer's budget is so important so you don't waste a lot of time with someone who can't afford what you're building. Do you ever charge a design fee?
@DaveCarlson it depends. A few years ago I was commissioned by the Federal Reserve to build a 12ft x 4ft wall art piece. It took several weeks to design and I did charge a fee for that. They had an initial budget of $10k which I wasn't able to stay close to but, they were very happy paying the $25k I ended up charging for it.
