Hello from Belgium. I saved around 65% for 8 years and reached the "theoretical" FI point.
I retired from my corporate job two years ago and am happily working as a freelance. As with other FI people, the freelance work covers my expenses and some. But I have no regret dedicating my late 30s' to early 40s' on the FI journey.
Now, I shifted my focus from the pure "save & invest" mode to more on how to spend time and money wisely. All in all, it's great to be FI :)

Over 50% savings rate per month is a big challenge if you do not already own a house, since if most cases over 40% of the income goes to the rent

    • @AngeloColomboFi

Sure, it depends on rent prices where you live, but it should be a bit easier if you're living with a partner that's paying half of it for example.

Now, with your "retire early" videos you actually made me question myself and think about that as a possible goal! Just was interested in knowing what are the reason behind not thinking about buying a house, and insted rent and calculate your goal on that, since my thought was always to buy a place.

Around 65% due to a significant increase in monthly family income in the past 2 years. I never linked the idea of working solely for money, like I never liked the idea of working fixed 8-9 hours chunks of time and having to arrange my personal life only when “allowed”. So, while I would still be working even if I would have enough money to not being forced to do it, I would probably pursue a part-time at first and maybe a small business after a while.

The difference of doing something that you want when you FIRE is that you will probably not go for a 40h/week ideal job anyway, the advantage is that you will do it but at your own pace that is the key difference in my eyes! Either way I believe most and best FIREs are Barista/Coast ones ( no need for a small pot but if you keep working it will cover your expenses anyway )

In order to complete my studies I have a 6 K euro debt, that I am going to pay when I start working. I plan to start earning around 2 to 2.5 K euros on a monthly basis. Should I start already paying the debt or should I invest the money in my ETF of choice and pay a smaller amount of the debt each month? Keep in mind that the debt has 0% interest rate.

Dear Angelo, I'm on the same investing wavelength as you. I am also investing in VWCE with a TER of 0.22%. However, the truth is that VWCE (0.22%)= 90% of VGVF (Vanguard FTSE Developed World 0.12%) plus 10% of VFEA (Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets 0.22%) which gives a resulting TER of 0.13% for the same portfolio.
Have you considered this alternative to cut costs? What is your opinion? Fingers crossed on achieving your goals, Julius from neighbouring Slovakia.

    • @AngeloColomboFi
      @AngeloColomboFi  7 місяців тому +1

I think you're unnecessarily over-complicating your portfolio in search for peanuts in savings.
When you factor in the extra costs for buying a second ETF, taxes for rebalancing and the extra effort, it's likely not worth it in my opinion.
Also if you look at the historical tracking differences instead of the fees, the difference is even smaller (0,065%, with a 90/10 split):
      -0,02 TD
      www.trackingdifferences.com/ETF/ISIN/IE00BKX55T58
      -0,10 TD
      www.trackingdifferences.com/ETF/ISIN/IE00B3VVMM84
      +0,25 TD
I chose the distributing versions for this comparison since they go back further in time. Also, I'm sure Vanguard will lower the TER of VWCE in the not too distant future.
Thank you, all the best for your goals as well! 🙏
