- What's in the Packrat's Tickle Trunk this week? Toby Jugs that were handed down through the family.
Toby Jugs, or Toby Mugs, were first created in the 1700's in the Netherlands. Toby Mugs, depicting mug shots of notable people emblazed in pottery became quite popular in taverns. It wasn't too long after that many other potters started making them, especially in England in the 1800's.
The first one is of a woman created by Shorter and Son. I am not sure of the date it was created but I believe it is quite old as it spiderwebbing, which is an indication of age and quite difficult to replicate. Although, these days anything can be and is forged.
Shorter and Son started around 1900 and lasted until 1964.
The other Toby Jug is a beautiful piece with no markings on it whatsoever. It features a hunting scene with a red fox for a handle. All the items depicted on the jug are raised. This jug is also spiderwebbing which is an indication of age.
These two jugs were my grandparents which were handed down to my mother before they were presented to me. My daughters will be the future holders of these lovely pieces. Thanks for watching.
