    Who are we?
We are a bilingual family living in Australia, following secular homeschooling curricula.
I'm an archaeologist (PhD) turned homeschooling mom. My husband Paul is an ethicist and philosopher (PhD). We have three children - a boy, a little girl and now a little baby girl too.
Mindfulness and minimalism are central themes in our home and in our personal lives.
    Our approach to parenting:
At base, we use a hybrid-style that incorporates principles from both the Montessori and Waldorf schools of thought. Invitation-to-play is an important part of this, as are hands-on activities and lots of time in free play. We don’t use drill and kill methods for teaching. Our strategy involves watching for which activities or subjects draw our children’s focus and then working to cultivate those interests further-a child-led approach.
We also believe that a child's self-esteem and their ability to be kind to others are infinitely more valuable than any one skill or set of skills, which is why mindfulness takes center-stage in our home. So, although we place importance on academic skills, they are not at all our primary concern (and it's not our intention to promote competitiveness among parents or children).
An uncluttered space is necessary for effective focus. So, minimalism is key in our approach and part of that is a screen-free environment.
    Our philosophy:
In their first and second 1000 days, children have the opportunity to learn faster than they will for the rest of their lives, by an order of magnitude. We were inspired when we first learned this. We can't waste this unique and profound ability to learn skills and, importantly, to build on them in life's initial phases. And we intend not to lose our momentum, going forward. So, we invested in our children's early education and in giving them the affection and time that they need and want for their thriving, and we are committed to making the most of the gains they have made. Join us as we review the books we've acquired, the unit studies we've created, and in discussing the developmental toys and resources we use and our views on what we find to be some of the trickier topics in parenting. We'd love to have your company, and we'd love to hear what you think or any questions you may have.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. It would be so helpful to know how you go through teaching a lesson with new concepts. I have such a hard time getting my 4 year old to focus for just a few minutes. I’m always looking for better strategies.
How did you get your children to start math so early? We’re still learning simple counting!

@@valeriebrooks3305 Hi there! Thank you for watching. I hope you've found it all helpful.
When my kids were little we did quite a lot of reading together, especially number books and counting books and that really got them excited about the concept of numbers and the idea of counting. After that we moved on to doing shelf work/Montessori activities. I have a whole playlist dedicated to just math related activities that I did when they were little ua-cam.com/play/PLhYTzodSZwktraQ4UbeaypmtKhZDg8YF3.html
      The other playlist is: ua-cam.com/play/PLhYTzodSZwkvwaojZzPMZATDDAm9LDmxr.html
These kinds of activities really got them engaged in the subject and after these we moved on to RightStart Mathematics. That was a great move for us because it's taught using a hands-on, game-based approach and they really loved it.
Since your little one is now four years old, I'd actually recommend RightStart Mathematics, because it's a fun way to do math. And I think that's the idea and the answer to your question: if they can find it fun then they can concentrate.
Our kids don't use screens. That could be a factor too. They were generally really excited to do activities and lessons.
