I follow news/politics a lot closer than most of my friends/family and yeah, it's not great for your health. I frequently take breaks and read a lot of newsletters that are explicitly Good Things That Happened This Week/Month/Etc. or else I burn out really fast.

That doesnt do me any good, unfortunately. Like the Bhudda, I cannot relish in the good while knowing others are still suffering. This is my plight in life and I don't suspect I'll ever be able to turn it off. Enlightenment usually results in more mental anguish. Ignorance is bliss.

It is super depressing and it does indeed impact your health. I take breaks every now and then and look up good news and fun stories like animals doing funny things that make me laugh.

I’ve been following American politics since Individual-1’s inauguration. I don’t live in the U.S.A., so most government actions don’t affect me (except those with global consequences). I feel sorry Americans have a lower quality of life because they are always the last in line and miss out on things that improve their lives. I’m horrified by the money corruption in American politics. But I’m hooked on your political soap drama, it’s like watching a slow-motion train crash (like someone rubbernecking while driving past an auto accident), and I’m waiting for Individual-1 downfall. It’s macabre, but it is what it is.

I don't know if it's bad for physical health. But taking a break can be therapeutic. Then again, I took 2 or 3 hours to make dinner and play some video games the other day and totally missed the breaking Manafort news. Seems like there's a scandal every day with this administration.
In the end, as a country, our health is already sub-par and that's with the overwhelming majority not receiving credible, vetted news. I'm gonna stay involved politically.
Shout out to David, Pat, Farron, and the Majority Report crew for getting us through these fucked-up times.

It is when you think about it for a bit.
Nothing we say online, or watch... will change anything in our personal lives. We need to pay bills, rent, mortgage... etc etc. Getting stressed out by situations we can't control. What has following news done for me in the last 55 years ? depressed me out. Nothing to help my life in anyway.

@Caleb Calvin - - everyone is taught that driving is a privilege, not a right - - HEALTHCARE should be the opposite: a right, not a privilege - - and it should NEVER have been tied to employment in the first place.

    • @calebcalvin
      @calebcalvin 5 років тому

Why didn't you just comment in the thread and I know that but right now that not the case the only way to get health care that somewhat decent is through employment

    • @calebcalvin

But to say it impossible to get health care of any kind is crazy to switch health care to government will take time because we have made health care a commodity

@Ross When it comes to Repugs vs. Progressives, the twain shall never meet. It's a philosophical difference that won't ever be resolved except by a preponderance of democracy - - certainly not between the two of us.

Im in the "everything is political, you cant extricate yourself from politics anyway" camp. I think it is bad for your health and i think everyone should tune out for a time every once in a while when you rationally know you need to.
I always envision a world where we have fixed all of the institutions that, when left unchecked, always try to gain more power and money at the expense of our liberties and livelihood and i pray for a day (i think it would be my one wish) that we have institutions that serve us such that everybody can just work on themselves and their lives and passions in a humane environment, atmosphere, community and that citizens watch groups exist nationally and internationally in order to alert us when anything is in jeopardy, in which case we all jump to the forefront but return to our lives when balance is restored.
This is only a dream, but its something to work for and never has this been more true while our planet hangs in the balance.
We need to eliminate these neoliberal, anti-human trends before we can get to the sort of cultural environment where we actually have a community of people not pitted against one another with these ridiculous corporate-serving philosophies engrained in the back of everyones minds like water to a fish. We'll get there someday.

  • @maverickdoe6984

Unlike, say... programming, teaching, being a mechanic, etc., I feel political discussion and news are much more toxic if you don't take a break from it. Especially news...which, in this country, is nothing more than feeding popular demand with soundbites and "headlines", rather than objectively providing deep coverage on topics that are truly important for public consumption. The majority of America seem more interested in entertainment than foreign and domestic policy, and prefer to get their news from opinionated sources rather than unbiased reports. Even journalists seem to have stopped caring about providing factually based information free from biased terms..."regulations" are replaced with "protections"..."big" "whatever" is used to make "whatever" sound evil and corrupt. So much more toxic than say...being a musician who eats, sleeps, and drinks music every day.

Guys, I'm a Canadian and even I worry for you people (mainly cuz your economy affects ours). I never really followed Obama's terms but Trump was too unpredictable to ignore since even before the Primaries. It's honestly entertaining to watch all this drama (Hollywood seriously needs pointers from this administration) but when it's put into the perspective of IRL, it's scary. I'm afraid for you people and for my country being affected as well.

The answer: YES. Addict yourself to a sport instead or at least a hobby that is more or less deterministic (that is, will give you sensible results if you put time and effort into it) - your future version of yourself will thank you for that decision.

definitely, every day I fell worn, want to be aware of what's going on but on the worse days I feel a little helpless while watching, I was 18 for most of the campaign and 19 when he was elected had no interest in politics before but one of the classes in my first year of college a psychology one diced to make us watch the presidential debates the interest that grew from that has become being very active and aware the last 2 years, no one I know follows anywhere near as closely as I do, school is a good distraction to take me away though

Until I was 34, I never watched the news. I'd hear things, maybe catch something here and there (oh, there was that thing that happened in 2001, which I slept through and heard about later because it was all over the place for a couple years). And really, I don't think it hindered me at all. I've been watching it lately, keeping up with things, but still try not to let it invade my life too much because aside from keeping informed insomuch as is needed to vote responsibly, most news is inconsequential in my life. And back when I was like 10 I remember noting that news was just depressing and awful and telling my parents they shouldn't waste their time on stuff that made them worry about things that they could do nothing about and which would barely affect their lives directly if at all. Politics is a bit different than general news, but there's still a ton of _noise_ that is really just pointless worry-filler. It feels like 90% of news is just opinions and wild guesses. And that can definitely be fatiguing.
It's funny, but I had a similar conversation -- the gist of it, at least -- with friends way back in high school. It was about computers, late in 2000, I think. At the time I didn't realize I'd never be able to afford more than a year and a half of college, nor that the California city I live in would fail to get more than a handful of jobs in computers even now. So, I was deep into learning about them and using them almost all the time. And eventually I started to get fatigued, partly because my internet was intermittent (dial up) and the internet itself was mostly just reading, sharing apps (called executables or applications at the time) and downloading mp3's on napster.
So one day I say to my friends who are discussing what sort of hardware upgrades to get, "do you ever feel like you need a break from computers? Like you just want to go walk in a park?"
They both said, "No way! How could you ever _not_ want to play on your computer?" And I realized they didn't get it, or hadn't reached that point, yet.
Worth noting, one got a degree (and the debt that goes with it) and works in a call center. The other got a degree (and the debt that goes with it) and after working his way up through various computer-related jobs near and around silicon valley, now drives a semi for a living, making more than he did using his degree.
