I just finished “when we were free” and now I’d rather read “in the time of the butterflies” before watching the movie, even if the trailer has screwed with my head (trailer for the help came out while I was reading it so that messed me up).
Reading this book made me even more proud to be Dominican because we hear about Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks all the time and how they stood up for their people and made history. I wanted to read about my people and how they made history. I think this is the perfect book for that.
it makes me so mad that they dont have dede as the main character when she's the one who lived and the one who retells the story of her and her sisters.... :l
Yay! I'm so glad someone posted a preview for this... Just got finished reading the book, and I didn't even know they made a movie for it until recently. I'm planning on seeing it, probably tonight. I know I'll cry. Hell, I cried reading the book. And yea, the book is freaking amazing!

They probably view Minerva as the most influential because after all, it was mainly because of her 'Las Mariposas' got started. Minerva was the first in her family to go against Trujillio so I understand the importance they pay attention to. I do have to agree that they should've represented the 4 sisters equally though.
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country and strong not like other country's that are afraid to fight back to the wrong leaders and how do I know because I'm a dominican born and raised in dr and so proud to be a dominican this movie shapes the determination dominicans have I'm only 14 move to the us when I was 8 but yet I travel every year to visit my family that I have left behind Dominicans love each other just remember that
What could I say, Haitians are hard working people. That Move to DR in hopes for a better life. Its sad to realize that the Haitian Government fails to provide their people their needs. But then Dominicans are blame in my opinion for not helping our fellow " neighbors" . What do you think about that ?
Um there are a lot of other people from different countries that fought back. Against their government to fight to earn their freedom for many things. So I have no idea where you got that others are too afraid to fight back.
Danissa Rivas Many people were afraid in your country themselves tbh which is why they didn’t go with Minerva. I bet if every one took action like Minerva then none of them would die so quickly because it would be to much people for the SIM
Really.....that's your concern that trujillo was not played by a better looking actor.....good Lord....do you even understand who this man was and your concern about his looks....Get real
I loved this film. However, I had a huge disappointment when I noticed none of them looked Dominican. I don't expect the cast to be 100% Dominican. However, when it came out on dvd my parents sat my siblings and I to watch this, because its an important part of our DR history. I was probably 13 and it broke my heart that none of them were accurately portrayed. No mixed, black people except for those portraying Haitians in this film. It made me sad to see that Hollywood casted mostly Mexican cast, as if Latinos all look like that. I love Mexico, but we look much blacker and less indigenous than they do. Shoot I was okay with having Marc Anthony that okay since he's PR, de la isla hermana (our sister island), but for a film that is depicting such dark moment in history that fueled by hate of black people it seemed contradicting to cast all white latinos. Nonetheless, their acting was amazing I loved it. They told the story line but they didn't accurately represent its sociohistorical context. I guess good to watch if you read the book...
Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. There are too many non-Dominicans, who look and sound nothing like Dominicans, starring in this movie. Having most of them as light skinned is also quite the revisionist nonsense when it's a population full of people that are a range of brown hues, sometimes as dark as any African or African-American. The casting in the movie is quite poor and would not get a pass in today's social climate. I wouldn't mind seeing a new take on the movie with better representation and less singular focus on Minerva.
@htownlithium Why are you so butthurt, fucking crybaby. I know the sisters were fairly light skinned, jackass. But they were not lily white either and had clearly Hispanic Caribbean complexions. Regardless at no point was I singling out their skintone. I was commenting on the overall cast being strangely pale for DR and the major roles not being played by any Dominicans whatsoever. That there weren't enough Dominican or brown Latino actors is the cyclical bullshit excuse racist jackasses like you use to keep aspiring talented actors from breaking into mainstream film and television. Progress and increasing diversity in Hollywood in recent years has proven folks like you wrong and full of absolute horseshit. A Spanish director is a white European, not an Afro-Latino, completely different culture and mindset, and far removed from DR and its people. You may have shitty poor standards, but some of us do not. Everyone knows the writer was Dominican, dumbass. But to get her work made into the movie she had to work within the limitations and give up so much control to the Hollywood system (very common), to make a film that's marketable and palatable to... guess who, jackass? White Americans. She had to give in to these enormous concessions and ridiculous insulting compromises that would be regarded as unacceptable and inaccurate today. That's why when a story is told on screen about a Chinese or Indian or Mexican person, audiences demand accuracy in terms of who portrays the characters and scripts that aren't compromised or offensive to those people. Representation matters both on the screen (major role actors) and behind the scenes (director and screenwriters). Standards have greatly increased. It is a big fucking deal. Not to your lazy complacent stupid ass, but it does to the rest of us. I'm not going to apologize to you, some condescending narrow minded idiot with low standards, for wanting more accuracy and representation in a movie about my people. Fuck off, you racist piece of shit and cry elsewhere about SJWs, liberals or whatever the fuck touched a nerve and has you crying so much.
