My sister's husband was a railroad engineer for many years in Bluefield, WV & Victoria, TX before he retired. He passed years ago.
He was a good man and one of my role models. He never minded "hitch hikers on his trains who were also respectful, and also "good human examples.".
He also respected the rules that he was paid to follow.
He was a good man and a good example for me.
I miss them both. I am the last of us four siblings.
I am happy. I feel fulfilled.
I appreciate those I love, and those I have loved; and those I will learn to love.

I'm 53 and have been a rail-buff all my life. I chased the Daylight around in CA as a kid and was the youngest member of the local RR club. I've always wanted to hop a southbound from Spokane or Seattle. It's way-different now. When I originally got the idea, there were no electronics (even a scanner was hard to come by). Ha ha great video! I’ve ridden that route between Casper and Greybull dozens of times and that stretch between Casper and Shoshoni is no joke. Believe it or not I’ve slept all the way through that section before.. Greybull is my favorite town to visit. Everybody is super friendly and they know what you’re up to lol. They don’t care though, they always wish you safe travels. If you ever stop and need a hotel there, go to the Antler Motel. If you don’t want to rent a room you can just pay $10 and she’ll let you shower real quick! Did you stop and see Shoestrings tag? he has quite a few on the old feed building next to the yard.

51:37 that comment about "dont let me see you" reminds me of one time in tucson getting pulled off a train.(also noticed that happens to be one of my boys pieces to the left 🤙)
we had just got on and my friends got spotted. bull stopped the train and we got off he looked at our ids and all that bs and while doing that he told me something like..this is just a game to me. sometimes i win and sometimes you win. dont let me catch you in here again or ill take you to jail. and i said.. dont worry you wont catch me in here again. he just let us go which was great because he had a rep for zero tolerance. maybe it was a different guy or maybe people are assholes and get taken to jail for copping an attitude. who knows?
we got questioned about a murder by tucson pd as we were walking to circle k but thats another story haha.
i really went out of my way to make sure he never caught me again but boy were there a few close calls. i was laying in a miniwell right outside the yard headed east. train was sitting there at least an hour. i was under the grate because i wasnt taking any chances. well i got tired of being under there and scooted out to peek my head up and see exactly where i was sitting and the bull is parked right next to my car. his face was just feet from mine i probably could have read what was on his clipboard. i dropped down and he immediately shined his light on the doors of the car across as the brakes aired up and we started moving. i almost had a fucking heart attack. i was being so careful to not get spotted by hiding because he used to stand on the stairs where the walking bridge over the yard is and shine his light down in the wells at night, it seemed like he was only doing this to trains that had to sit outside the yard for a minute so i knew what to expect. it wasnt even 1 second between me dropping down and the light hitting the car. if i had waited a split second longer to peek up i would have got hit with the light.
    those were the days...
good video. i think i will always kind of hate train hopping shit being on youtube but you cant put the cat back in the bag. at least youre not being a dumbass getting hit with tree branches on top of a hopper...

The retarders are retarding. I used to work out of Roseville as an engineer. Many riders used to ask me what that ding da ding ding da da ding ding sound was. They're basically little air pressured pistons that the wheels of the rail cars roll over and depress. The retarders adjust to higher or lower air pressure to slow the cars in certain tracks or let cars in other tracks roll down the hill faster. It's all based on how far down the rail the other cars sit. If they're really far away, it'll set low pressure and let them roll free or near free with no resistance. If the train they're building in a rail is nearly built and the cars aren't that far from them it will apply a lot more pressure so that those cars gently roll down and just kiss knuckles with the ones sitting in the rail.

I think the most dangerous thing you did in this video wasn't the train hopping it was walking around that paper mill at the end 😮...you fall from some of those spots they might not find your body for days or weeks😮

Lots of people think I ride/travel for youtube but they are greatly mistaken and ignorant. I've been on 3 trains in the last week and a half. I haven't retired.
