    THIS STORY:
With just $100.00 he founded the Peabody, Daniels & Company, at age 24 in 1883, in Chicago. Peabody Coal started out as a retail coal vendor, buying coal and re-selling it to retail consumers to use in their homes and businesses. By 1920 Peabody Coal Company was one of the largest coal companies in the United States, and in the end, Francis Stuyvesant Peabody would have amassed a personal fortune of $35 million.
He constructed the Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook, Illinois. This is where our walk starts, as we tour the outside of the small chapel that once contained his glass covered coffin, purported to have been lined with a fortune of gold bars.

    THIS CHANNEL:
    _________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
    Some are famous.
    And some infamous....
    ....and some with tragic endings.

Ron, I am so happy to finally see someone who is like me. I love history and cemeteries. I never had nobody that wanted to go with me except my Dad. My Dad passed away this April and I cant go walk around cemetaries anymore cause of disabilities. I am so happy I found your channel. God bless you and keep safe.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know it's difficult. I lost my parent's two year's apart from each other. I too love cemeteries, especially very old one's with interesting back stories. That's the best part of watching this channel though,....you can take a visual stroll with Ron and all of us and enjoy these cemeteries once again. I too have health challenges so watching this channel gives me happiness, peace and interest. My prayers go to you and your family.

Greetings from Texas. I’ve always loved looking around in cemeteries and reading the markers. The old monuments are pieces from a time past. The new ones will stitch old and new together in future time.

I too love cemeteries and cremation grounds. In fact, in Hindu tradition, a cemetery or cremation ground is considered a holy place, an ideal place to perform spiritual practices, because it is where one of the most important lessons in life is taught- the transient nature of all existence. Goddesses like Kali, literally the Power of Time, is to be invoked in cremation grounds and she is described as Smashana Vasini ie One Who resides in Cremation Grounds. Symbolically the cemetery or cremation ground stands for the creation itself with its ephimerality.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Ron! I almost got married in that Chapel! It's BEAUTIFUL 💜 There aren't many chapels in the Chicagoland area to get married in but this is 1 of them. All the names in the bricks are those who were married there with the dates which is very nice. I recommend people visiting this property for it's peacefulness and the beauty of nature.

Ron now you have hit me close to home. Since the 1920's Mays lake was a Catholic Franciscan Retreat house. I used to make my yearly retreats there since 1965 until it closed. Many and my of the Franciscan fathers there were and are my friends to this day so I know the place very well. Though most of the good men who ran that place are long dead + and may GOD rest their souls + and the few remaining are now old men stationed at St. Peter's Church Downtown Chicago. I'm over 75 and get to see them monthly since I attend that church. My friend Fr. Oliver - RIP - always used to tell our retreat class the story of Mr. Peabody, his coal riches and how the poor man died. We were told of the many times kids would break open the chapel to see 'the tomb.' Nothing spooky about the place at all. I can write a book on my many adventures there; too bad we closed down. It's been a long since I visited the place but I wonder are the graves of these good men are still there. Side note: greatest preacher Fr. Jason Kimmich, OFM. That guy was so good he could preach a Crusader! If Fr. Jason is 'haunting' the place PLEASE come to my parish and fire up our woke pastor like Fr. Jason fired me up through his soul searing talks.

Ron I used to make my retreats at this lovely place from 1965 until the Friars sold the place. The inside of the chapel is plain. In all the times I was in attendance I never heard of our monks detaining kids when they caught them trespassing. I think they would call the police. The mansion in the back was our retreat house. There were also two large lakes that, and here's the weird part, these lakes were overstocked with fish, large alligator snapping turtles and a large flock of geese too fat to fly! These geese were nearly large as people! Whenever I walked outside if they blocked the sidewalk I'd go around them for fear they would attack you. I saw one of the guys almost loose his finger to one of those large carnivorous turtles! One more thing, Ron was it the Cherry Hill mining disaster if I got the name right of 1909? That coal mine was owned by the same Peabody that sold the monks the Mayslake grounds. Back in the day there were two very large seminaries one St. Joseph's for priests the other St. Pascals for religious brothers. In those days when the Mass was in Latin I was going to train for the priesthood but got kicked out for brawling. So I became a special education teacher instead.

    • @FacesoftheForgotten
      @FacesoftheForgotten  2 роки тому +1

I think you’re thinking of the snapping turtles, they are prehistoric and pretty ugly. If you get your finger stuck in their jaws you better cut their head off.
As far as the cherry mind of 1909 that’s an interesting connection. I assume you did see that episode I did in Cherry Illinois.

My husband asks why I care about who lived a long time ago and is already dead! I am like, "It is absolutely captivating!" I wish someone would do this exact type of channel in Mexico city, where I grew up. I love Chicago and it's nearby suburbs because of the history.

I lived off Butterfield Road near Rt 83, across from Chapel Hill Cemetery. I know the legend well. And the monks would make you kneel on broken glass, ( was our version) they also had huge black dogs that would chase you down and kill you. Awesome video! Thank you so much

This is crazy. When I was a kid my friends and I used to do seances. At one of them we were asking the spirit of a guy named Peabody who was buried in oil in a glass coffin to come forward. We didn't even know who he was 😂This happened at my friend's house. Believe it or not, her lights started going on and off. It scared the daylights out of us Lol. Now I know where this whole Peabody thing started. Never knew this before. Also, my dad used to go on retreats to Mays Lake every year with the Knights of Columbus. I still have one of his souvenir ashtrays that he would bring home. It has a picture of the mansion etched in it and says "Mayslake St Francis Retreat Oak Brook" on it. I wonder if he knew the Peabody story and that his daughter was trying to call him back to life, Lol.

I never get enough of your videos. They are so informative and above all interesting to help us think of these lives once lived. May I ask a question though? I cringe everytime I see you move the grass on a marker omg can you use disposable gloves for hygienic purposes. I love all you do for us!!

I remember talk of “Peabody’s grave and the Monks” from When I was a teenager, but we never went there, we weren’t that brave or stupid!
