Fiats did earn a reputation for poor quality back in the 70s. From what I have researched, there were problems with substandard steel and more significantly with labour unrest and agitation in the Turin plants. The Fiat of today is a totally different company. The only issues I had with mine were breaking of some interior plastics (supposedly an issue only through 2013 models) and two broken window regulator clips. I also had to replace an engine coolant thermostat. There were no issues with anything in the powertrain. It ran like a champ, day in and day out and it let me save a LOT of money on gasoline.

Chrysler is doing pretty well. Jeeps and Rams are selling like hotcakes. Their vehicles are just as reliable as Toyota -- if not more -- since Toyota is now using Nissan (Jatco) CVTs in their small cars/crossovers, plus their 4 cylinder engines have consumed oil for some time. OTOH, Chrysler's 2.4L, 3.6L, 5.7L and 6.4L engines plus their 4, 6, 8 and 9 speed transmissions are solid.
I'm 6', almost 200 lbs and fit into them. Well, not the back seat but the front ones. But I found the shifter in the wrong place, and the 1.4 turbo requires premium gas. Fiat has the chronically unwanted 1.4 turbo that they won't retire or rebadge, they have this European arrogance they ca impose their superior product and we will like it. It's not working for them.
Toyota don’t cost much either, and you don’t have to repair them so long as you don’t do anything stupid. Italian cars are rolling piles of entropy, which is a shame because they’re such beautiful and fun cars.
I got rid of my Abarth a few days ago. It was a fun car, but it was falling apart on me. It depreciated so much, I still owed over 3k on the loan compared to the best offer I received. I ended up getting a Civic Si sedan, and would never buy another Fiat again.

All car manufacturers have adopted toyota's quality philosophy. However it was really Ford who started it. Many safety features you find in cars today have its roots in Ford's safety programs. Toyota's quality is based on the 5S system which is now used by all. Unfortunately no matter how well the cars are made, the neglect, lack of proper maintenance and abuse will take its toll. People simply don't know how or lack the time to fo maintenance. Airplanes, firetrucks, ambulances, police cars are maintained on a regular basis. The rack up thousands of miles with no problems.
@@stichy420 , take another look. Take a test drive. If you can't handle a woman, you can't handle a Fiat. Compare the driving feel to other cars. You will love it.
Toyota succeeded because of Total Quality Management. Nobody has replicated it to match their success. But even companies like Ben & Jerry's strive to implement it. I know because my dad was a plant manager of their 2nd plant for many years.
Until my 500 got hit and totaled, I absolutely loved it. I still miss it. It was fun to drive and got me 46 mpg if I drove it carefully. The stick shift was fun and let me get every ounce of performance out of the otherwise weak 101 HP engine. It was too small for long family trips but a perfrct vehicle for commuting and errands. The thing I really miss is being able to squeeze this thing into ANY available pa4king slot. If you do buy one, avoid the earliest models (through 2013) as there were some quality bugs to iron out (I had to replace both window regulators within a few months of one another). But like I say, this car was FUN. It met my first rule of driving. "A car should never be boring."
The classical FIAT 500 in the Sixties had a 2-cylinder and 25 HP engine. Perfect for commuters, youngsters and ladies throughout all Italian towns. A 101 HP engine for the current FIAT 500 should be largely sufficient: if Americans do not appreciate saving money and gasoline, it is a pity. The Planet is one and CO2 now is over 400 ppm. Indeed, I appreciate your point.

So are fords and chevys.. FIAT owns many factories around the world do does VW. The fact that the 500 was assembled in Mexico does not make it a Mexican car. You will not be dissapointed.
@Mike Gunnerst , it does not matter where it is made. The design, the tooling snd materials are Italian. Only the labor is Mexican. Citroen has a big car factory in Portugal. CITROEN is French. Cars built in Mexico are very good quality.
I have owned several Fiats. As I do with all my cars, I drove them UNMERCIFULLY. They do require some maintenance BUT they are put together VERY WELL. The thing to know about Fiat and ALL Italian cars is; you buy an Italian car because you LIKE to drive and ALL Italian cars drive REALLY well. If it is a Fiat or a Ferrari, when you get out of the car you want to get back in and drive more. People who want a car as an appliance will NEVER understand this. Fiat is not for them.
It is a shame that more people do not see this. Unfortunately, people in the US want large boxes on wheels that simply move down the road. We are also a disposable culture, so people that means people(not all) do not take care of their stuff and simply throw it away when it breaks. I do not understand the reliability argument, regarding Fiats cause US brands have had horribly constructed products with many problems and recalls. The fact that the entire US auto industry nearly imploded a few years ago, is proof of this....cause during the recession, the more reliable brands were still holding on, as whatever market was left, was still buying from them.

Fiats are just the wrong kind of car for the US. A 500 is the perfect kind of car if you're living in Italy or Europe and you need something small and nimble that can handle the tight spaces and windy roads they have there. It doesn't matter if you have a 1.4L engine, because you aren't going to be cruising at 55-80 mph for hours on end. Most of the driving in Europe is at speeds of 40 mph or less and less than an hour away. I drove a Fiat Tipo (similar to a VW Golf) rental car when I was in Germany and honestly, that car felt big for most of the streets, roads and parking lots. I almost felt like I needed something smaller. Conversely, I drove a Fiat 500 rental car in the US and it was just terrible. The engine was downshifting all the time, every pothole felt 5x bigger than it actually was and I had no space for anything more than a few small items. Not too mention the poor acceleration. And the fuel mileage wasn't even that much better than I'd get driving a Ford Fusion (/Mondeo). It did reasonably well in the city, aside from all the bumps and potholes it slammed into. I can't say how well it would do in 6+ inches of snow and ice since I only drove it in summer, but I know I'd want to update my life insurance policy before the first snowfall. Honestly, the Fiat 500 is a very niche car in the US. It might make sense in the older cities of America and Canada but for most of America, it's just woefully incapable of being a good general purpose daily driver.
Fiat wants to be a niche brand like Mini is, not a mainstream brand. That's why Fiat sells some of their mainstream models as Dodges in Mexico, and if Fiat wants to sell cars like that stateside they're gonna sell them with Dodge badges and grilles.
It's failing because many of us owned Fiats back in the 70s/80s! I owned a 79 Fiat X19. It was super cute and super raggedy! My mechanic asked me to buy another car. He hated working on it!
Jesus Christ, man... This is why we can't have nice things in the U.S.! America's vehicle market is SO OBSESSED with expensive behemoths for vehicles that it over looks anything that doesn't fit the frame. Almost EVERY CAR IN THE US IS AN SUV! 😤🤦🏽♂️
My first car was a red Fiat 500 sport, I named her Mia. 2:32 at the time there where two dealerships in Las Vegas then one closed and the other only sells used ones.
There are a lot of people in the us with large families. You need to be able to fit everyone in the vehicle. That's why a lot of manufacturers offer vehicles with more than 5 seats. You used to only get more than 5 seats if you bought a mini van.
One of the big reasons small cars don't do well here is because Americans do so much highway travel. Small cars are not fun on long trips and are scary when everything else on the road is gigantic and can crush you like an egg. I think it's sad they might pull the Fiat brand out of the market, it just means less choice for the consumer.
The Fiat 500 is just too small. I had a 2011 Ford Fiesta and the ride quality was amazing for a sub-compact. My 2012 Ford Focus was great on the highway. Small cars today aren't like the tinny, under powered small cars of the 1980's & 1990's.
In America small vehicles are just not as desirable majority of roads are very large so space is not a concern, also gas is a lot cheaper than majority of other countries (unless you live in California then it’s expensive). Finally fiats in America are just not as save as other vehicles. What would you rather be in during a wreck a 2500pound fiat or a 6000pound body on frame truck. Any sane person would choose the truck unless they have a death wish.
Fiat is a Street vehicle 🚗 Not a highway or freeway friendly It will need a bigger (better ) engine to compete with the rest of American car companies.
@@yamcha111 if its bigger, it means more power engine, and more steel, and overall cost is higher, then it is suppose to be more expensive? Fiat is small yet expensive, Japan obviously doing much better job...
The thing is that Fiat sells only two models of car in the US. The rest sells for them Jeep Dodge etc.. You don't have every Fiat with a Fiat logo. You have Fiat with a Dodge logo ( Fiat Tipo/Dodge Neon) etc. So this complete report is a waste of time. They really haven't understood the strategy of Fiat.
They are talking specifically about fiat-branded vehicles, not about the whole group, so you have not understood the point of video at all. Also, fiat tipo has more in common with american engineering than it has in common with older european fiats. If anything, they tend to go in the way of selling dodge engineering under the name of ,,fiat", not the other way around.

Fiat 500 was Italy’s iconic model like the Mini in the UK historically speaking but in practice actually fiat 127, 128, and later Uno, Panda and Punto were fairly more sold and popular in Italy back then but also in many other European countries. Fiat is historically a leader in the compact car industry in Europe (and still is), not sure this is ideal to match US drivers wishes and requirements?.. (Fiat threw a mid-sized SUV -the Freemont - on the market a couple of years ago : total fiasco.)

So, Fiat pulled out of the US before it could sell the Fiat Uno there? Lol, what a mistake. Here in Brazil Fiat was struggling in the 70s and early 80s, with GM, Ford and specially VW crushing it in sales. Then, in 84, it released the Fiat Uno here, it's first global car. It took the industry by storm, it was cheap, reliable, had independent suspension on all fours, light weight, much larger than a 500 while still being a compact car (290L trunk, that went to a whopping 900L if you folded it's back seats, imagine that in a car smaller than a Fiesta!) Designed by Giugiaro (founder of the world famous Italdesign studio) himself, it was made to be the BEST compact car in the world, while still being cheap and easy to maintain. That same car from 84 was kept in production until 2013 with minor changes! It just kept selling because it was so cheap, versatile and specially fun to drive! Fiat also made a special version of the Uno, the legendary Uno Turbo, imagine a 800Kg car with a turbocharged 1.4L back in the 80s and early 90s? It was blazing fast! Even modern cars still have trouble to keep up with it!
I’ve never understood having a huge SUV or Trucks or preferring that. I’ve always had sedans or small cars. For me it’s like unless you have a huge family or work in construction or have a job that requires you to move a lot of things around than by all means. But gas you’ll always be spending on, tires are a lot more expensive, maintenance in general is a lot more for larger cars. Insurance alone on a bigger vehicle is a lot.

Yes.
Fiat is very popular in Europe with quality on par with the best.

The thing I really miss is being able to squeeze this thing into ANY available pa4king slot.

The classical FIAT 500 in the Sixties had a 2-cylinder and 25 HP engine. Perfect for commuters, youngsters and ladies throughout all Italian towns.

Best selling Fiat in Sweden is the Ducato at place 23 (394 in total and thats because of RVs.) next fiat is on place 62 (135 sold) and its the 500. Last month Fiat sold 2 Abarth and 2 Talento and 4 pandas of 31830 car sold in total in Sweden.
@@KristoferOlsson I live in an area where there is a lot of salt ont the road in the winter and I go to the mountains every few days. Funny thing is my (now sold) 13 year old Panda II never rusted at all, whereas neighbors' Citroëns and Peugeots are full of rust (after 6 years...). The rust problem dates back to the 70s and maybe 80s for Fiats
I love my 500 Abarth. I would love a 595 or 695 as a last ditch sales ploy
CTS-V Wes send over the biposto!
The American Abarth IS a 595 EsseEsse.
Nothing wrong with a good ol abarrth
I bought a 500c Sport in 2012 and I love my car also. Best car that I ever owned. The engine has 130k on it and this past July 4, I drove back home and got 50 mph. I take care of it well and it runs great. Now that it is paid off, it's cheap transportation and still looks great.
Ive had two. A lot of comments on here seem to be saying Fiat are unreliable junk, but the Abarth models are superb.
Fiat has a whole line up of car they sell in Europe but don't sell here. You have to give customers a selection.
They also have more color and style options in Europe. To be honest I don’t like most of the colors they’re offering Americans - they’re boring
I’m ok w fiat leaving just don’t take away Alfa Romeo!!!
Here in Germany we call Fiat "Fehler in allen Teilen", which means "Failures on every parts"!
You're snob
And what do you call Renault?
Then what do you call Renault and Peugeot? Or one of those garbage cans bmws?
@@davide1143 Look at my comment above your comment, you maniac! Renault is awesome! Peugeot not so much, but still better than GM or Chrysler! And BMW is falling off, because their cars are getting uglier and uglier!
Agree their a city car .Even owners agree their less than ideal for room.
Esteban Henriquez - Have you ever owned an SUV? Don’t knock it until you try it!
Esteban Henriquez WHATS wrong with having money to spend on expensive land whales
I thought it means why Fiat currency is struggling in US
My first car was a red Fiat 500 sport, I named her Mia. 2:32
at the time there where two dealerships in Las Vegas
then one closed and the other only sells used ones.
....and? What's your point about FIAT?
Struggling? I’m starting to see them quite often now, in San Diego.
Mostly use cars
Yahir Tapia I see a ton em every day in AZ
Barely see them here in NY.
Since when does San diego follow the rest of the country?
Ive seen maybe 2 ever in PA
Why does everyone buy suvs I mostly see only one person inside? It’s big and bulky sleek sedans look way better and drive better
All the time
Better visibility, better ride quality, utility, and safety. I’ll never go back to a car.
There are a lot of people in the us with large families. You need to be able to fit everyone in the vehicle. That's why a lot of manufacturers offer vehicles with more than 5 seats. You used to only get more than 5 seats if you bought a mini van.
We love our 2018 Fiat. Marvelous to drive. Good for two retirees.
I have a 2015 Fiat 500 sport and love it!
Literally Same!!
Because they are garbage cars. Just like Chrysler and dodge and Jeep
Rubbish.I've had two Fiats and no problems .Regular maintenance and they are fine.
But jeep is not garbage
New Jeeps maybe, but older ones can last for miles.
We are driving our second Fiat 500. Have never had a problem with them. Lot of fun to drive them.
They're simply not great cars and their pricing isnt aggressive enough for what they are. a 500 is worth around $7000 new to me.
Fiat is a Street vehicle 🚗
Not a highway or freeway friendly
It will need a bigger (better ) engine to compete with the rest of American car companies.
I drove a rental Fiat from Kansas to Indiana and back, and it was great on the highway. I loved it.
I'm happy that Fiat at least made it back to the US in my lifetime.
Love my 500e and getting a Spider eventually
Big one in my bathroom if you want it
id buy it, but since its half size, id expect half price u know....
amen...the Abarth,s are crazy over priced
AGREE
Like a Porsche Cararra or Ferarri ?
American logic, if it bigger it's better
How about hiring some engineers from Toyota. People want quality in a car, not cuteness.
I've been driving a 2014 500L for a little while now. Pop model. It's fun to drive, and the 1.4L Turbo is a spicy engine. I'm already looking for a Spyder as a summer car. Cars don't have to be big to be fun, people.
you will talk different when a Ford or Toyota truck hits your 500L while you are inside
Don't Charge an ARM and a Leg And We might Be able too By One.
The economy recovered? When?? I never had a recovery. I'm still stuck living in my dad's kitchen.
😂 right on.... i own a home in california and im still f'ked
The FIAT has struggled for a LONG LONG time in the USA. They are pretty close to the YUGO. We don't LOVE this brand whatsoever. Close to JUNK.
Terrible quality, high price. Why would it be a success??
Just purchased a second NEW 500 ... because no issues with the first. LOVE them ... period !
I WISH EVERYONE KNEW HOW FUN AN ABARTH 500 TRULY IS!
"The most smiles per mile." That's what I always tell people. I love my giallo Abarth!
My Camry gets better mpg. That's the problem. They are not that fuel efficient.
What mpg does your Camry get?
H8 on a full tank I get about 550+ miles driving all highway and not even touching the reserve. The tank is 14.5 gallons and 2.5 reserve. So like 40+ mpg. It's a 2018 camry.
@@war42691 Oh damn. That is indeed very impressive, you're right Fiat can't catch that
This is bs....people follow me, & chase me down to askabout my fiat. I think it's marketing. People love my car and cant find it.
Lisa Stewart they aren’t the worst cars out there, but I can promise you that no one is chasing you down to ask about your fiat... they are a dime a dozen in any country. Poorly made and common
I did purchase a 2015 Fiat sport and I'm very happy with it but it was very pricey. Then the 2016 came out and the price was dropped dramatically. But all in all I am happy with my car .
Not enough Abarths were taken to North America.
Fiat need to RE-LAUNCH with Abarth only & put the FUN back into 'driving'.
The fun in driving only lasts until you see the red flashing lights in your rear view mirror.
Abarth only has 160hp. barely qualifies as 'fun"
@@sparklenebula6042 LMAO you haven't driven one then... abarth 500's are really fun to drive just like the miata MX5
@@sparklenebula6042 160 hp is a lot for a car that weights 1000kg
Fiat and alfa are not managed at all. No business plan just "we've got cars, let's try to sell them
The beauty of UA-cam is that anyone can say anything, right or wrong... look at the P&L of FCA and you may adjust your opinion, but by any mean, feel free to express your views :-) candidly
@@philippechevereau9818 i'm sorry mate, but that's à fact.
Looking at Renault or Citroën in Europ, yes they make horrible cars but at least it Sells well. Sadly.
Alfa propose georgous cars but just 2 in their entire range.... They are late and since the 156 they've always been.
I will put the blame on the dealerships who wanted more profit. Fiat is a very good line.
They pushed Jeep and their Dodge muscle cars. The acronyms are meaningless as other cars have them too like FORD Found on Russian Dump
All cars of the 70's all the way to the 80's were problematic and were unreliable due to rust. They did not have the rustproofing we now have today.
The Fiat 500 is a too energy-saver car for americans and not polluting enough.
Got myself a 500L for less than half the original price. Car gets great mileage and has alot of space on the inside for what you think is a relatively mid size hatch
It took the industry by storm, it was cheap, reliable, had independent suspension on all fours, light weight, much larger than a 500 while still being a compact car (290L trunk, that went to a whopping 900L if you folded it's back seats, imagine that in a car smaller than a Fiesta!)
Designed by Giugiaro (founder of the world famous Italdesign studio) himself, it was made to be the BEST compact car in the world, while still being cheap and easy to maintain.
