The Camel Spider, also known as the Sun Spider, is a "spider" that actively seeks shade because of their hot and arid habitat. This often causes people to think that camel spiders chase after people--in reality, they're chasing after the person-shaped shadow, but people run away from the spider, causing the camel spider to chase after the shadow.

    Cool bug fact!
While bees are known for their one-time sting, the way they deal with home-intruding wasps is quite unique.
They group up, swarm the wasp from all sides, and rapidly flap their tiny wings, whilst not letting any space for air. Essentially, the bees are cooking the wasp alive by raising their body temperature.

      @Torthrodhel Місяць тому +28

I am obsessed with bees, particularly bumble bees. I have lots of bee facts! Here are some bee facts! :D
Firstly about the one-time sting; this is particular to honey bees. The main groups of bee are honey bees, bumble bees, solitary bees, and stingless bees. Honey bees uniquely have barbed stingers, which is why they tend to die after, because very sadly, they rip themselves apart trying to get away. Bumble bees don't have this problem and neither do solitary bees, but they're actually generally less likely to sting (honey bees are just more combat-willing in general). Stingless bees are supposed to hurt worse than the others because they just bite instead of sting!
Honey bees and bumble bees are so fascinatingly opposite in the way they set up things! They are the two types of bee who live in colonies and have castes (female queens, female workers, and male drones). Bee males don't have stingers at all, by the way. That's because stingers originally evolved from what used to be egg-laying tubes! I'm not sure how that evolution worked since they still do lay eggs, so they didn't lose that ability. Odd huh.
Honey bees are big advance-planners and build an entire hive before using any of it. That's how they get the tesselating hexagons. Their queens don't do worker tasks at all. In contrast, bumble bees build nests adding pieces on as-and-when-needed. Little spherical wax pods just plonked on wherever there's space in no specific pattern. Bumble queens will do worker tasks until they produce enough workers to stop doing so. Honey bee colonies are enormous - thousands or potentially tens-of-thousands of individuals. That makes enough body heat for them to survive together over winter. Bumbles have much smaller colonies and much shorter lifespans - only a few hundred individuals. They all die out in the winter, save for the newly hatched queens, who dig holes to hibernate in solitude and wake up next year to start a new nest. Queens are able to do this because they're bigger, because they're fed more when they're being raised. Bumbles always like to take over old nests abandoned by other animals. Mouse nests and bird houses are favourites of theirs! Recycling bees. :D
People tend to think of honey bees while drawing bumble bees. Honey bees are the only domesticated ones, the others are wild. Bumble bees are the big fuzzy ones that look fat (but actually are just extra-fuzzy). They're that way from being cold weather specialists. They still don't like the cold or especially the wet, but can tolerate it a bit more. This is because they originally evolved alongside the formation of the Himalayan mountains. Finding themselves "suddenly" (in evolutionary terms) at higher altitudes, they developed extra fuzz to deal with it. :) so cute
Solitary bees are a very varied bunch with huge variation of looks! They don't live in colonies, only tiny family groups. Sometimes it can look like they live in colonies, but in truth it's only down to many of them finding a good spot - they don't interact and support each other like honeys or bumbles. They're the ones you get if you make a "bee hotel" in a garden.
The myth that bees shouldn't be able to fly according to physics, is absolute nonsense. Some guy wrote the calculation on a napkin while drinking, and forgot to consider that bees aren't the same size as blimps. Obviously, scale makes a difference to physics. Bees are easily able to fly according to physics. They have two pairs of wings, that flap in a figure-8 pattern, actually creating little vortexes of air beneath them, much like how a helicopter flies.
Only honey bees swarm. There's a species of bumble bee with unusual mating habits called the "tree bee" that can be mistaken for swarming, but it's not swarming, it's drones dancing in front of a nest to attract a queen (who then has a wrestling match to determine if the drone is strong enough!).
Bumble bees spend a lot of time crawling, because flying uses up a lot of energy (especially when weighed down by pollen-filled pollen baskets on their knees, which is where the term "bee's knees" comes from). They need to constantly feed on nectar to replenish this energy. The amazing little darlings risk their lives each time they go on a journey which can span huge distances. Running out of energy will result in death. :(
Bumble bees can pollenate a lot of crops that just can't be pollenated by anything else. Flowers and bumble bees co-evolved in a strange way, where flowers made their pollen less accessible, requiring very long tongues (proboscis) to reach or even being unreachable save for a special technique unique to bumbles - buzz pollenation. With this, they lock their six little legs onto a flower and buzz at a higher pitch, making the pollen shake out of the flower.
The biggest bee is the "flying bulldog", or Wallace's giant bee. It was quite recently rediscovered in the rainforest after being previously supposed lost. It's a very ancient bee that has enormous mandibles and looks more like a beetle than a bee! It's 4cm long. The biggest bumble bee, also 4cm long (but slimmer), is the "flying mouse", bombus dahlbomii, a bright orange bee native to South America.
Bees evolved from wasps. They're basically wasps that started enjoying pollen more than meat and changed diet, diverging due to that. Bees are vegan wasps, ha. :P But yes, wasps have been around a lot longer than even bees (and both predate dinosaurs). They actually found the most sweet and sad fossil of a very early bee encased in amber (which is basically the only way we get bee fossils). It's a tiny little thing that looks very wasp-like but is clutching a grain of pollen. aww! :(
Insects are the least endangered group of animals, however bees are the most endangered type of insect. They need our help a lot. Honey bees are mostly doing okay due to commercial viability; it's the wild bees that need assistance the most. Bumbles and solitary bees both need help. I don't know much about stingless bees (only what I've said), so I can't be sure about them.
I live in England. The UK lost the vast majority of its wildflower fields over an alarmingly short time, and it's a desperate situation for a lot of insects including bees. They now, despite being wild animals, depend mostly on peoples' gardens and urban green spaces! But they are still not domesticated and do not do well kept inside. If you find one in trouble, the best thing to give it (very gently) is a 50% mixture of sugar and water. Honey can help, but is usually highly processed for humans, and often can be from the wrong type of bee with different parasite and disease resistances and such, so it's not as good a choice as the sugar-water. However, bumble bees will take a lot of rests during their adventures, so don't one mightn't necessarily be in trouble, it could just be resting.
Finally, if you see a bumble bee "wave" at you, it can seem super cute, but it's actually a warning that the bee is scared and wants you to back off. Bumbles don't like conflict and so they give this warning rather than going directly for the sting.
I love 'em to bits, if you couldn't tell. Ha. :D

    Cool Bug Fact!
OK so from the looks of it the bug at 0:21 looks like a common black ground beetle. these little guys live about 1-4 years and are most active from the months of April through October. Adults and larvae are voracious predators and feed on a wide variety in insect pests such as caterpillars, millipedes, slugs, and snails. Typically, the adults are fast runners and rarely fly. Some species have fused fore-wings and have lost the ability to fly completely!
