- I love building things out of hardware store parts even though with 3D printing now I don’t do it as much. But it’s SO fun “hunting” at the hardware store and the employees are always so helpful even if they are a little confused at first 😂

"This for like Fallout or something?" "You know Fallout?" 😂
If only it were that easy. Lol!
If you are doing something unconventional then always lead with what you are trying to do, a bored employee will work way harder on an interesting goose hunt than a boring game of 20 questions
@LairdErnst Have you tried? You might find a fan, especially if you are working on something with widespread popularity.
“Ma’am this is the plumbing department”
So what? She’s on a mission!!
😂😂😂
Lol a mission
You could even say
"We're on a mission from god" 😎
(The Blues Brothers)
She knows what she wants and she is going to get it every if she doesn't know what it exactly looks like yet
A rad mission 😎😎
My local store gets nervous when they see me. One day I'll be buying normal diy stuff and the next I'm building a working prosthetic leg and they never know which.
LOL!!! That’s usually split up between me and my husband, he has a list for stuff around the house and I have the list for building a proton pack 😂😂😂
@@jenmarkham Now imagine that when you find the parts you need to make 20 of 'em - I get fun reactions. Scouting keeps things interesting.
Never let them know your next move
Damn I literally had this problem yesterday only the lady looked at me like I was crazy for wanting to make shoes that look like hooves 😂
So iconic
Having worked briefly in an Auto parts store when someone came in looking for a certain color spray paint for his Ironman armor, I can relate to this conversation.
Ford Red or Chevy Gold?
@@thegurw1994 Red.
I love going into random stores and asking questions like this. One time this sweet little old man was like "I got you"... He loved what I was doing and was totally into giving me ideas. He said he was into inventing things to make his wife's life easier because of health issues. I love it!!!
Yesss I love this! 😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ran in to an elderly WoW player the other day at walmart. I would guess she was 70 to 80. She was reading my shirt out loud as I walked by and geeked out lol. She was like hey I play that game I had that in game! Turns out she started in beta and raids every week with her guild. My hubby had to come find me cuz we were so exited to meet another player in the wild lol.
For context it was an Epic Purple Shirt from the 1st or 2nd expansion.
This made me tear up 🥹
Elder gamers are so awesome! They know all the bits and parts that nobody else has found. They take their time, but then they're out of pocket and know all the raid mechanics down to the t and can carry my dumb butt through anything!
My mom is almost 70 and plays. She’s gone to Blizzcon to meet her guild and goes to the midnight releases for new expansions. A normal sight to come home to when I was younger was her mid raid with our two hens in her lap or on her shoulders.
Ahhh Vanilla WoW back in the day... When GM's would actually visit and converse with you (and actually solve your issues lol.)
I used to keep the mats for the special land mounts for pallys and locks in my inventory and run guildies through those dungeons.
I quit playing about two years ago, but I played from vanilla until then. Good times.
I though it was WoW- words of wonders. The word connect game and I was soooo confused what raids you were talking about 🙂↕️
You made them the perfect combo of uptight but charming😂
Ah so glad you enjoyed it! The goal is always to poke fun at me never at retail workers and I’m glad that came through 😊
This.
All day.
I was making a prop weapon with my nephew and once we mentioned exactly what we were trying to do, the guys at Ace knew exactly what we needed😂
I work at a local hardware store, i love it when folks come in with these types of projects. It’s great because i still don’t know shit about actual plumbing but i’ll help you find pieces for your cosplay all day
I still love those people, and they try their best. Overworked and underpaid most times. ❤
I totally agree, always willing to help no matter how weird the thing I was looking for 😍😍😍
@@jenmarkham exactly 💯 ♥️
I work at a Home Depot and I get customers like this every now and then. It’s always a blast trying to help them with these kinds of projects.
I made glasses chains, and the little rubber bit that connects them to the glasses always broke. Best replacement I ever found was the little rubber circle to help seal pipes screwed together? It was black, so matched most things but didn't stain. It was also very durable and was fine being exposed to water, oil, makeup, etc.
That’s so clever! I know exactly the part you mean that’s a perfect use for it! 😍
Gasket. That's a rubber gasket.
Ooo! I've been wanting to make some, but not pay for those specific pieces and they only come in bright colors locally. I'll look into that! Thanks
This was literally my favorite part of my job at hobby lobby (8 years)
That’s awesome!
I love those big hardware stores. The other week I made a huge flirt pole for my dog (like the cat poles with feathers on the end). The handle is a pvc pipe, I chose the pipe by how it felt in my hands when I swung it like a bat. I'm glad no one else was in the aisle with me.
This reminds me of the conversations I had in Home Depot while trying to make Squidward legs for my child’s musical 😂
Except they did not get the concept 😅
haha but did you have fun hunting for all the bits and pieces? 😂
I’m sure they are fed up with me and my random projects at this point.
Nah I’ll bet they love it, something different to help with! 💙
I bet that's fun for the employees to get to help with.
I think so too! I always have fun shopping and everyone is usually kinda amused but still happy to help 😂🤩
@@jenmarkham It absolutely is. Leading with what it's for is helpful though, since otherwise we wíll try and give the 'expert' advise.
Hahaha! So true. I always feel awkward telling them what I want to make. At least at the fabric store, it’s normal 😂
... You're making a suit of power armour? F@CK YEEEE
As someone who does tabletop gaming, I have lived this struggle😂
That is hillarious. I haven't seen or played Fallout, but I know enough it is a thing. Perfect that she knew Fallout! So fun Jen!
That's me explaining anything
The amount of times I’ve met secret nerds while shopping for stuff to make cosplays is astounding you can just tell that if someone is buying a bunch of colorful fabric chains paint and tools that it’s something awesome
I love it when employees go from, "This is for plumbing, it must be the right size for the customer" to "this is for 🌟aesthetic🌟" (ive worked at ace hardware for a while and love helping out customers like you btw!)
I really enjoyed getting some insight on how new parts are made, and why they’re made too.
I used to work hardware and my favorite customers where the artists and the cosplayers. They are so sweet and there projects are always so much fun.
That’s awesome, I always have so much fun in my hardware store
You always open with your project goals and what you’re trying to match materials to/with at both art
_and_ home improvement stores
You’d be amazed how helpful these lovely people have been once they find out I’m building fantasy guns
I believe it! It’s always so fun when the employees help you get into your weird decorative project 🤩🤩
The local orange box store knows me very well as I used to work in the Theater industry and would do similar things looking for inspiration on how to build practical effects needed for plays and musicals. They have even helped me figure out how to rig a rope that looks solid and will fall apart easily when weight is applied
That’s so awesome! 😍
This is so me when buying car paints😅
I had a guy once try to be all macho at rhe till telling me it was obvious I was fixing a hole in the body work of my car.
He got a surprise when I told him I was making a flamethrower for my Ripley costume😅
Ahhhh I love this 🤩🤩😂😂
@@jenmarkham Love your cosplay videos. I'm also a costume addict and a fellow Biker Scout. 😀
My mom and I are OBSESSED with fallout!
This is why I just walk around the store and look at what they have. Easier to see what they've got and try to work something out than try to explain to someone else what you're trying to achieve.
I do this too sometimes, it’s fun to hunt around the store!
hahahaha i’m like this at the fabric store. after i figure out we aren’t playing by the rules, it’s so fun!
SO fun! 🤩
What's even better when they *get it* and are excited to help.
Yes!! I imagined that was the case here too they just needed to understand what was happening 😂😂
I always love these discussions! It doesn’t matter which side I’m on, they’re always fun
I worked at Home Depot (in garden) and when people came in with off the wall projects it truly made our days easier and much more interesting. Our store would go out of the way to help with Halloween costumes, PVC pipe wheelie things for disabled pets, stage props for local theater or school productions, or whatever oddity walked through the door. All day long people come in who need a wax ring and a float valve, Zinsco breakers, or systemic insecticides but you never get a kid making a robot out of dryer venting and cardboard boxes. Weird stuff is truly the best and the way the employee is represented in this video makes me a little sad but not everyone is happy to break out of a mold and be creative, too
As crafters it makes our day too when employees are amped to help! Did you watch the video all the way through? The employee is into it they just needed to understand what was going on and the me in the sketch kinda buried the lead 😂😂
I work at Michaels and as a cosplayer, my FAVOURITE customers are the ones where they start talking and I can squint at them, nod a couple times, then go, "This for a cosplay?"
Look, I LOVE helping people solve their problems with the most random supplies you might never have considered; someone else might as well benefit from my experimenting!
Most hardware store people if you say it's for cos play they get excited and ask for pics when you're done
I love that!
My goal is to go to the same Joann or Home Depot so often that someone asks me "so what are you working on THIS time?"
Haha that would be a flex 💪
ME everytime I needed something for theatre props from Home Depot.... Although a few times the staff member was happy to join in on the creation. And at least once, they ended up bringing their family to see the show.
Note to self so always start by saying "this is for a cosplay."
We rarely got them when I worked at a place that sold used tools, but artists and cosplayers were my favorite customers.
There was an extra feature in the Titan A.E. movie about the prop department looking at stuff in the hardware store like garden tools like sprinklers and such and employee comes up 'Anything I can help you with?" and the Prop designer laughs and shakes his head, "I doubt it."
lol!!! 😍
I can hear the conversation in her head "I don't get paid enough for this" lol.
I find saying that you arent going to use the things for their intended purpose helps to kind of bypass the confusion of the worker going "but that's not how that works"
"I just need it to look cool"🤣🤣🤣
I work at Home Depot and love people like this. I had a couple of dudes come in, clearly high off their ass, asking me to help them build a potato launcher.
Doing something other than plumbing really helps break up the monotony of the job
The plumbing department is the go to place for costumes/creative diy projects!
"This is the plumbing department!"
Look, ma'am, the quest marker pointed me here. Blame Todd, not me.
This is why i call it the big arts and crafts store😂
lol I love that! 😂😂
My local mom and pop hardware associates love it when I come in because I'm probably going to be up to some of these kinds of shenanigans.
Hahah I'll bet it's so fun for them too!
"This is the plumbing department"
"Well yeah, I don't want you to sell me an actual futuristic arm thing... unless? Cause if you have a robot arm department..."
ME WHEN I'M OUT HUNTING DOWN COSPLAY MATERIALS! I feel so seen!!!
I work at a lumber yard/hardware store. I live for these interactions.
saleslady: "... like in fallout?"
customer: "I love you!" :O
You'd be surprised how many nerds you can find in hardware stores. Usually they're in the younger crowd but they're there
The struggle is real. I love it!!
I mean, the moment you hear “prop” you know all the normal pvc plumbing rules are out the window
I work at a Hardware store and I can absolutely relate to try to guess what the client wants, but also that most of my coworkers are huge nerds😂
“Big box hardware store” lol 😂
Man how often did I had this conversation. You can always tell which ones are the experienced ones knowing how to deal with crazy people 😂.
A fee days ago I had to buy something for my curtains and im still shocked that the lady knew what I needed right away.
This hit home for me I actually work in the plumbing department and get questions like this a lot
My favorite customer service experience was when a dude was looking for humidifiers to grow mushrooms
Me to my grandfather, when I go over to his workshop to get stuff. "What weird shit you doing now?" But 9/10 he does help me build it ❤
LOL I was in exactly this situation when I was steempunking a violin.
Did something incredibly similar to this when attempting to build a Winter Soldier arm. I think they might have thought I was trying to build an explosive.
"This for fallout or something?" "No I'm reading this DIY art book about cooking and anarchy or something"
I would be begging them to come back in full costume
I love helping people with cosplay building
As soon as she said fallout I was like “oh the power fist”
I work at Big Box Art Store Named After Someone, and any time I get ppl doing cosplay stuff I immediately drop everything to help
If we’re doin robot arms you’re gonna want the air duct section 😂
This is similar to an encounter I had at a hardware store but explaining haunt sliding gear was fun to try to explain when getting gloves, E6000 and 10 90° connectors while looking like I don’t leave the house often
I have a book that lists all the tools and hardware you could ever need. It's great for having the right language to find what I need.
So glad I got a hobby lobby near me. As a D&D nerd without a hobby shop close by asking lowes for fake grass that is about 1/100th the size was a nightmare.
Me as teen showing the Home Depot worker a print out of a DIY pvc camera rig 😂 I still have the rig due sentimental value since it was one of the few projects my dad helped me with.
I'm a props master for film and tv and the clerks usually get very excited when they get to help me find some odd thing
Ahhh that’s awesome! I imagine that part of your job is really fun 😍
So relatable and accurate!
I have a similar problem designing props for an escape room. You work with what you find haha
This is me at the home store everytime
Honestly capra demon and taurus demon is weirdly fitting, because you still have one smaller faster guy, and one bigger smashier guy.
Made clippy for Halloween last year, got to the cash with my pipe foam covers and dryer exhaust shiny tape stuff and the cashier was like "costume or home reno?" I think she was more shocked I knew who clippy was than anything 😂😂.
this is why i never ask for help anymore at department stores unless i know exactly what im looking for :')
My hardware store employees would tell me to go to a cosplay store
I did build props for a student theater group for a while and I had conversations like this so many times :D
That sounds like such a fun job! 😍
This made me happy
Not just cosplay, I've had that issue doing all kinds of random projects
Shopping hardware stores on vibes alone can be a real pain
I have the same issue I make potions for costumes and to give away. I also make DND set pieces using weird things like wires to make stuff. I always get weird looks when I buy 3 gallons of resin and a bunch of glass jars cause they are cheaper at hardware stores than craft stores.
I used to work in the UK equivalent of Home Depot. I ALWAYS asked what they were using the item for. I LOVED people like this. Trouble is I used to have customers 3 deep waiting for my help. Some refused to have anyone else help them!
"Not much insulation board you're getting. Something came apart in a wall?"
"Nah I'm gonna make a sword out of it. :)"
Usually "I'm making a costume" or "This is for a TV show" works
I wanna see the futuristic arm piece already lolz
I love these types of customers as a worker at lowes
Just had that. I was looking for tubing to build a water drip wall in my snake enclosure. Snakes are a very rare pet here, let alone tropic once. The tube needed to be very small and very flexible. I looked in the zoo department cause they have aquarium stuff there. After I went electronic, maybe they hav tubes to bundle cables. Nope, garden center was the righ answer but even they hadn't what I needed. Well thats what I tought, turns out what I was looking for would have been to thick.
Everything turned out just fine 😊
This is so me when i go to the fabric store
Please just start with what it’s for😂 we have to think for true functionality. If it is not going to blow up your house getting the wrong size it makes the selection process a lot easier on us to help you
Me: I need pvc pipes.
Worker: what is you project?
Me: light saber.
Worker: sigh… come with me sir to the light saber section of the plumbing aisle
LOL!!! I bet they love it though! Something fun and different! 😂😂
They were not happy with me trying to build a steam engine from scratch lol
😂😂😂
The plumbing department is the best place for cosplay and larping. My local places are fairly hsed to it. Not just from me but from a whole bunch of other locals too.
