Epic = Rime of the Ancient Mariner. That's the official definition of the word!

I once met Dave Murray in '86 walking around in Amsterdam, I was clearly looking like a rocker and our eyes locked passing each other.. we both looked back when we passed and we exchanged pleasantries. No signature, i just got to shake his hand after a few minutes. Lucky 18 year old me. Great guy and great memories.
Once again, thank you Jim, for doing this and taking us back on this journey. 🖖🏼

Great stuff Jim! I haven't changed my mind but that's from the starting point of 'I really like it' so who cares!! 🥳

I have to admit I never got into Iron Maiden although I think I saw them at Reading in 80 or 81. I have time to give it a go now though so thank you for the video. It is fantastic to see you enjoy the album so much. Maybe you should do the next 5 Maiden albums over the rest of the year.

I love The rime of the ancient mariner, especially live. Great how the poem was transformed into one of their best songs. The creaking of the wooden ship ; love it.
Yes, bought that live album, Live after death, in the second half of the eighties; great one. My favorite live album is: Rock in Rio; bought the dvd.
If Iron Maiden had to start as a band now, there’s a problem. Most young people grew up with the junk on mainstream radio, music channels and what their friends listen to. They didn’t grew up with the variety of music and the evolution of music, we grew up with.
Here in the Netherlands there isn’t a single radio station that plays metal songs; maybe once and awhile a ballad.
Luckily there are young people who look out of their bubble. There are UA-cam channels like Andy and Alex.

you should definitely watch Time Machine Modulus it’s 3 teenagers in a battle of the bands in 2007 and they perform a 10 minute noise prog rock masterpiece in such a fun way and genuinely made me return several times within the day

What a great album! Top 3 for me, alongside Somewhere in Time and BNW. And RotAM surely takes top spot as my favourite Maiden song, though Hallowed Be Thy Name is an ever so close second

I remember the first time listening to Maiden. Earphones on my Walkman. Layed on my bunk as an 8 year old. It felt alien, weird, magical, and also a bit naughty because I'd nicked the tape off my brother's pile!!☺️😎 (It was No. Of The Beast)

Probably all because of me nicking my bros tape and hearing that songs amazing opening lines...☺️

I think you're right about Maiden not getting as large in today's metal scene. Although they're brilliant song writers, so maybe being influenced by modern metal, they would have produced something of like nature.

I learned their drummer, Nicko, is a born-again Christian. He supposedly has Christian symbolism all over his drums, too. I hope it’s true. We should all come to the realization of God, our Creator, and the One Who made music and gifted us with the ability to create it or just enjoy it in our soul and spirit. God bless and Metal on…giving praise to the One Who gave it-God, the Father. Up the Irons!

Powerslave I do like of course. I think it never clicked in ❤️‍🔥 terms with me because I loved the others around it so much. To me the great mix might actually be what edges the album into my mid table rankings of Maiden. Each song is really good no question....but maybe not enough sonic contrasts to get me buzzing.... I never get the old goosebumps moments enough anyways compared to my fave LPs 🎸🤷‍♂️

Madness sir, pure madness!!!!! 😜. It would be a very dull world if we all liked everything the same. I get it buddy, it’s all about how a record fits into your own personal history and the story it tells.

@@JimNewstead thanks for making time to reply. It may be and perhaps I should give it a chance... I have never enjoyed much real heavy stuff at all however I am starting to mellow a little bit as I have been listening to more of late than I ever have in my lifetime... and I never listen to them growing up. However I do follow another reaction channel in which the person there does like that kind of music and I've come across some things at a thrift store to send him such as Metallica, and iron maiden DVDs... I gave them a watch before sending and actually didn't mind some of the Metallica but I have to admit the iron maiden DVD I couldn't make it through a single song nothing appealed to me maybe that's because it was early iron maiden and they've changed... I'm not sure where this album is in their discography... But because I respect your insights and tastes I will keep an open mind and perhaps see if I can make some time to give it a listen. Thanks again. Glad you enjoyed.

@@daveking9393 oh Dave! Please don’t let me push you into something you don’t like…. You know what you like and that’s a good thing! This is 5 albums in - 1984. I don’t actually find them that heavy really, certainly I’d say Metallica are heavier band but Maiden is much more melodic and the singing is a million times better! Anyway, whichever way you go, respect man! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
