Nice review. But what is with this "no bezel" crap that - quote: "nobody seams to like". Don't get me wrong. No bezels looks good, but since a bezel-less design comes at cost of "no stereo front speakers" and "no front camera" as well no option for other features like "face recognition" to unlook a device etc and the fact that it is easier to hold while gaming or watching movies on the move. I really prefere bezels and so do a lot of people. I am also happy that Sony keeps its design. It also stands out of the the rest of the uniform phones for conformists.
drives me batty how reviewers and alike seem to be pushing or pointing out larger bezels. I like holding my phone and not having it trigger the screen.
I used the Xperia Z for almost 3 years and after that i've got the Xperia Z5. Ive been using it for one year now and i hope to use it for the next few years... I love the design. I will always buy Sony Xperia. For me it's the best smartphone
i was angry when my xperia play failed to me in 11 months so i got an iphone 5 because my 3G lasted 4 years. big mistake. that piece of junk power button thing broke twice, so i got a nokia 1020 but it was stolen just 3 months after i got it. i gave sony another go when the Z5 got released. i have never been happier with a phone. ever, it's been 2 years now and just the battery is the one that is showing its age. apart of that, it's still fast and the seals are still good. the only complains i have are the plastic camera lens, low reception and the loose headphone jack. the connection gets bad from time to time. but apart of that, i consider this a masterpiece
I bought my Sony Z on June 2013 and I still use it until now, May 2018. Only on 22/5/18, my Z had showed the sign that I need a new phone, it had shutted down randomly and optimizing apps and the battery went crazy. Other aspects of the phone still remained excellent, I could update most of the apps, the camera and the sound is still fantastically working. I still love this Z, but I got to move on. Thinking of buying this XZ1..
You don't get this design at at all. It's the main selling point of this device. It's rugged and looks sharp. This is attractive to many men who don't like the common round corner, soft style.
What are you smoking ? "If you do not change the design you will lose customers" ??? They will lose customers if they change it. I buy Sony phone because they have that space between the screen and edge of the phone, that space helps me a lot to hold the phone and watch movies and play games. Imagine this: There are people out there who do not like phones with the edge to edge screens.
the fact that sony keeps changinh design since xz2, xz3, now xperia 1 and the reception seems not good, proved your words is totally wrong, big time...
I like my screen compact, with thicc bessels my thumbs are perfectly aligned with joysticks from games, with thin bessels my thumbs have to move to an uncomfortable position at the edge of the sceen
I am sick of the Samsung and Microsoft bloat, and the Lineage OS port for the S7 is just unuseable. 3 Years ago i had the Sony Z2, and i loved this device. After the Z2 i had the LG G4 and than the S7. Both devices disappointed me :/
I had the S2, then i went to the Z3 and loved the device, and 2 days ago got the ZXP, and i can tell you that comparing the S8 and the ZXP, the ZXP is a way better phone, better specs, less gimmicks
I highly recommend it. I've had the Xperia Z. Z2 and Z5 Premium. Have also had the Galazy S7 Edge, LG G3 and G4, and currently have the HTC U11. While all of the phones are strong in their own ways, I always keep finding the Sony's seem to be the ones I'm most happy living with. * The software seems to always be stable, smooth and reliable (while I found Samsung and LG had inconsistent performance and memory management issues), and every time I do a software update the phones seem to get better. LG and Samsung..not so much. * The keyboard on the Sony has always felt the best to me. I know this is something you can replace, but the simple fact is that on the Sony I've never had to - it's perfect as it is. * The UI on the Sony is easy to use and speedy, with no unnecessary GPU hogging animations or similar. Other brands have annoyances such as the LG being too cutesy in it's design and having lag/stability issues, the Galaxy S7 with it's fixed app drawer button on the bottom right (irrational), and the U11's dictionary which absolutely refuses to remember any words that it may deem to be impolite or offensive. The Sony UI on the other hand just does what it's supposed to do simply, cleanly, reliably and without fuss. * The Sony propriety apps just always seem to work well. The Gallery app is great, the battery management has always been great, walkman app is nice, the mail app is great, etc * The Sony physical design has always been perfect to me. The larger bezels make it easier to grip the phone in one handed use without worrying about accidentally registering touches on the screen or on the corner softkeys (e.g. S7 Edge). The power button / fingerprint scanner on the side is in the perfect spot - easy to reach when you want to, but in a place where you never find yourself accidentally hitting it (unlike LG' and Smasung with their rear power button / scanner, or the U11 with it's front one - too easy to scan your finger by mistake). The hardware camera button is fantastic - nobody else has implemented this and I have no idea why, because there are certain times where you just want a quick shot - and the ability to half-press for focus and then full-press to shoot is awesome. Waterproofing is great, the shape feels great in hand (not too slippery easy to grasp), it's light enough yet still solid enough to feel premium, the stereo speakers have the best stereo effect of any phone I've used... My only real criticisms are... 1) The speakers don't go very loud. If taking a call on speaker while driving, its hard to hear over ambient noise - the U11 is much louder (though sound quality is better on the Sony) 2) The camera's lack of OIS means you cant set the shutter a low as competing phones (otherwise you get blurry shots). Combine his with the fact that the lens aperture is higher then the competition (meaning less light coming in), and the end result is that you need to use a significantly higher ISO in order to capture good flash-less shots in low light. High ISO means more noise, and the Sony DOES struggle with noise in low light compared to the competition. In well lit shots it is a best. 3) I don't believe you can change the home screen to display a 5 x 5 grid. Default is the standard 4 icons across, and there was no option to change that even on the 5.5" Xperia Z5 Premium/ I'm assuming you still can't do it on the XZ1 either. No idea why Sony leaves this feature out since it's built in to Android OS, and it seems to make no sense to take away personalisation options...but it's really the ONLY complain I have about the Xperia UI so I can't make too big a deal about it.
A true Sony lover doesn't hate whatever bezels Sony put in their design because the overall design looks gorgeously stunning. Sony Phones are still the best when it comes to overall features. It's quite simple and professional looking than any other phones like Apple that was only made to impress but honestly, it's only a bitch phone. Samsung, they have limited phone settings. It doesn't have like what a Sony can do with its camera manually. Nokia is fine and Huaweii. But seriously... I can absolutely see why other phones still try to improve the camera, especially the front cam. They still fail to compete with Sony's camera phones. Plus, Sony is widely known cool in producing affordable gadgets and appliances. Sony phones: Best for Videography, Photography, Gaming, Music. All u need for everyday satisfaction is here. Sony is not that pricey for real but they produce high quality, they can feel what people think is contentment. I think people who makes bad review about Sony are just stupid. They only use china copied phones that they can use. Trust me, nobody wants an expensive gadget destroyed.
Not true. Maybe we just have different preferences, however you havent see it personally. I got this phone and I can say XZ2 compact design is really good. Atleast jn my case. This is not just bcoz of look perse rather usabiliy and comfartability holding the phone. I really recommend XZ2 compact. For its big brother im not sure since i favor for small phone. Peace 😊✌️
TechMagnet if the grills getting closer to the edges you would most Likely muffle them with your hands easely during playing games or watching content.
For me, I like huge bezels. Because I can hold them while playing games. Or pick the phone up by holding the bezels while puting the phone upright. Don't have to worry about accidentally touch the screen while using it. Never been a thin bezel fan, it is just me.
Just bought this phone days ago (SOV36) the Japanese version of it just for PHP5300 or under $100 and included the original QC3.0 charger and basic Sony earphones... Overall the build quality is premium, the aluminum body feels very nice and premium to hold. The cameras are great specially the front camera because of the autofocus, yes lowlight pictures are below average compared to same flagship camera. The only gripe about the phone is the battery, I get consistently 4 hrs screen on time, and for average user it's enough but if you're gonna game you'll definitely be needing to charge this device more often. Screen, software, build quality, camera, fast charging... Definitely a steal for under a $100
I still use that phone now in 2022-12.. Still one of The best mobile you can compare that mobile vs new samsung galaxy s 22.. And battery still great, fast charge...
I love it, but have to say I do prefer the black one ☺️ I want all features that bezels can give a phone. Stereo speakers, buffert zones for drops and holding, better cooling and be able to record 4K continiously for over an hour. The other brands cant do that.☺️
well, i do love that design you called "boring" at least it's the only and unique one in the market.. the rest are copycatting each others.. samsung, lg, huawei, nokia, other chinese brands..etc, and lastly the iphone x... Sony is so unique.. and i do not care about those bezels.. i have an ♡ XZ Premium ♡ and it's the best of 2017
Just got XZ1 for a couple days. Love the design and premium feel of that phone. Thick bezel and chin doesn't matter, I think it's iconic design of SONY. Sadly they no longer keep this tradition
I have a XZ Premium and just shot a pic with it in manual mode, it was perfect. No need of dual cameras, one good is sufficient and I also wanted to say that I prefer this design as the one that you could find on some phones like the Oneplus 5, Huawei etc. It's elegant and different though I find that the XZ1 could look better
Yes its true its not bad, but its sad that the s8 blows the XZ1 out of the water in terms of image quality (even though some s8 models have a SONY SENSOR !) this is incredible. sony should finally step up and get atleast on the same level as samsung.
TechMagnet Some people say that Sony cameras are bad, others say it's great. When you look at DxO scores they are among the best every year, and I think that part of the poor reputation of Sony cameras is due to the Auto Mode that is good but not great and when you start to play with the settings you can get pretty good shots
The only thing i hate with sony's flagship is the lack of manual control mode on its camera. I mean how can a flagship only have 1s max for long exposure?
Mark me down as another lover of Sony's design. Sometimes bezels are useful (like for front firing speakers), and there is a stately symmetry to Sony's design language. Yes, it has stayed static for quite some time. Yes, the side bezels could go completely (as they do in the XA1).
Again its about the design. You do even mention one of the reasons for the design. Better reception. But you also getting the front-facing speakers, better cooling and buffer for dropping the phone by misstake. Those bezels takes a lot of the beating. I think the design is topnotch and so 2018 because of this reasons. So well if you dont want this, you go with a phone that do look like the rest an iPhone. I rather have a phone that is not like others. And did you even mention the front-facing speakers cant seem to remember. Only htc, sony and other brands that have bezels got those. Why? Well with smal and thin bezels they won't be possible to have at all. And I think Sony would chans their design when speakers is possible to use with small bezels.
reception not really as the antenna loops can be easily integrated in the frame. works on alot of other models. Cooling not sure, I would be interested in a heat dissipation comparison between OLED and LCD too. Stability yes +1 ! but i like the design, i think there is still some room at the top and bottom, otherwise its cool.
Sony has said several times that they thanks to those bezels can help the phone to be less warm. Before Sony phones got really hot and couldnt record film for that long of a time. But they know put the camera module further away from the processor wich now makes it possible to film for a very long time. There is many clips online that shows that all other brands camera apps cracks down long before Sony does. There was a guy that even had I think it was the Samsung Galaxy S8 (of some sort) It could only film for a 30 minutes or so... while the Sony Xperia XZ premium filmed for over 1 hour. So it definately not a bad thing that bezels are there. Yes sony always had bezels, but it just reseantly they actually took good use of them. Before that X series, the bezels were actually like many saying today, wasnt having any function what so ever. The camera module was close to the processor wich heat the camera up fast, and the phones got really hot. Yes it was scary kinda. :-) BUt the new sony phone dont get hotter than 40 degrees celcius. ANd that thanks to the bezels and that Sony actually take advantage of those bezels. Wich they didnt do before. So yes, they are important, and in my opinion really modern, because Sony can do much more than others companies can do with small bezels.
I am a Sony fan and am using Sony phone. But the thing you said about bezelless phone won't have front facing speakers is wrong as Pixel 2 XL have them.
@@TechMagnet the bezel is needed for the large front facing camera. it has a 1/3 inch sensor 13mp thats as much as the iphoens rear. people forget this
I bought my XZ1 two years ago and it's still going strong like a new phone. I've been using it quite heavily and it doesn't overheat or anything like that. I didn't even realize brezels would bother some people. Weird, I love them :D I'm not going back to phones without brezels.
So many people waiting on the XZ1 because of its size, and the bezel! For me, it is just perfect. First, because it feels sturdier than any other phone I've ever held in my hands. Second, because I have large hands with long fingers, so if you're like that as well, this will be a pro, not a con. The design may not be the prettiest or the edgiest, but again, if you want pretty, you get an iPhone. This is a very capable, no-nonesense phone... except for the 3D scanning, which is nonsense, but still pretty cool. Also, I can confirm all the praise. I've been using it for almost a week, and it's a great phone. Although battery life could be a better.
Sony Xperia always being the best smartphone for me.. but being underrated by the world all the time. it is always iphone here iphone there iphone everywhere. we all know iphone sucks
indeed. im using xperia Z until now, and it'll be 5 years in just 2 weeks, and man, until now it started to have a bad battery. i told a lot of ppl around me that sony is the best phone, but idk why they cant see it. they opted for samsung, iphone, huaweii and all, and i thought like, how unfortunate of em lol
I love the design, if it works, dont change it, its whats on the inside, not the outside that counts. but if the compact had 64GB+ storage than 32GB it would be awesome. I will go for the compact, not for the money wise, but the design. a square body is better to hold in my opinion, and the camera is more into the body than the XZ1, better protection for the camera, and last.
fully aware, its the reason i said it would be better if it had 64GB, still going for the Compact, I like taking pictures, but gaming and videos I can do on my tablet/pc, less than 2 weeks, Im looking forward to it
I tell you what Sony would never lose customers if they listen to your reviews which are honest and to the point very good I ordered mine it a day ago and I love the style I love the design and one thing people need to realize is glass back phones back they break easy that's why I like to Sony xz1 I mean it's all metal design and very strong anyway thanks again great review
Sony MIRAI is just a RUMOR !!!!! they will not change ! But if they do, steven your video is the first i will checkout. Such an indepth review. No other reviewer does that. great job man.
Markus Haier just now i changed from sony Z5 premium to note 8 cause the design only . I know there are many amazing option in sony that i like as - slow motion and really good durability . I realized Samsung design is awesome -- but -- i have put cover for note 8 that kill all design :( 😞 . I really waiting new design of Sony.
Just bought the XA2 Ultra, and the *DESIGN* is one of *THEE* key factors as to *WHY* I chose this phone. All too many speak about these phones being "outdated", but hey...beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Just like cars, these phones can become timeless. As far as specs go, Sony offers a lot of *BANG* for your $$$, and if there ever were an overpriced phone, enter Iphone and Samsung, which are both a bunch of hype. Hey, whatever floats your boat, right?
I think your comments on design are a bit annoying and biased, that's' just your opinion! Sony will not lose customers who like the phones that look more unique and classy, those who don't can buy Samsungs and Iphones etc that all look alike... I personally love the design and think phone is classy. There's this trend now that a phones can't have bezels, who decided that? They are not automatically bad or ugly, they can look bad is design is bad but the design of this phone is great and it looks slick and elegant! I actually think a lot of baseless phones now look all the same and boring and prefer this. Plus phone like this is easier to use.
Using Xperia X Performance, I love this device so much, amazing performance, camera, design. I love Sony to the core.. Previously I had used Xperia Z, but sadly I lost it.
I've got to admit, those bezels are big, in fact, they look even bigger than my aging Sony Xperia Z2. The reasons I'm buying this phone are these: no useless QHD, it's great audio capabilities, and the fact that Sony has always made some sturdy phones. I tend to drop my phone a lot, be it dropping it while taking it out of my pocket, it slipping on one of my college's desks (those chairs with that integrated inclined table for taking notes), me pushing it over the edge of the desk with my arm, etc. I lost the count of drops at the first month of ownership. Tell me another manufacturer aside from CAT that makes phones that can withstand more than 3 years of such abuse without a case or screen protector without breaking
Why let others to control the design language? I think a phone has to have : good camera, good long performance, good design and good ergonomics. Beseless phones looks really good but using them is not easy, you have to take them only from the sides ni besels to grab... When taking pictures or videos you have to grab them with two fingers... You definitely need some besels but sony gives just too much. Overall the design is really good. Just try to figure out why sony doesnt want to be the best in all aspects, camera, design, battery, screen, they have the tech but they don't do it... Still I will buy this or the compact when price is $550.00
A range rover ran over mine several days after I got it. Gutting, I know. It only needed the lcd screen replaced, the rest of the phone was in perfect condition apart from few scratches on the aluminum back. Quite amazed actually.
I'll buy it for the design, just love simplicity, don't care about the camera, it's sturdy, durable, powerful, clean os, no gimmicks, a smartphone to the limit
Very impressive video. Thank you so much for putting out an informative, straight-to-the-point video. You had some concerns regarding the camera. I have to ask what your thoughts are about it in extreme low-light conditions? Can the flashlight be run simultaneously with the camera to aid in those situations? Thanks.
having Z5 dual premium, awesome. It came with hard glass screen protector and elegant leather case. normally I shop around for gimmicks but with this, that's it. nothing needed. for the first time when I walk around electronic shop and not tempted to switch to other.
I currently have the XZ. I think one thing SONY can improve on is the low light camera quality (which includes improving the sensors/software/stabilization), other than that I quite like the front facing stereo speakers, normal lighting camera quality (both front and back) and the fingerprint sensor which is conveniently located at the side. And if there's another change is probably to reduce the top n bottom bezel, but not completely get rid of it like iPhone X or S8. The bezel in S7 is just the right amount, in my opinion.
i got this phone 2 months ago. it's very decent the software is solid and reliable and battery life is great . I like the slim design and the camera is pretty great all around. i can say im satisfied as this is the last of sony's omnibalance design.
First thing I saw with this phone is it's classy and elegant design ✨ looks so expensive. I was deciding to buy an IPhone but I changed my mind to this amazing phone and now this phone is my new phone, I had never regrets buying this phone ✨❤️👏🏻🙌🏻👌🏻
I am an iphone user for last 10 years, had 4,5,6 7 etc. However could not justify a £1k spend on a phone. So I tried a Sony, I had one in 2002. I was surprised at how good it was and especially like the camera. So I save nearly £600 over two years on my contract which I can use for stuff I like ! and have a good Phone !
Sony has an elegant look to it. Plus the finger sensor on the side is so much more comfy than on the back with most phones these days. One thing XZ3 disappointed me in was it's very weird design, reminded me of SAmmy, would have been my dream phone thanks to the specs
"Also new" - they had it on Xperia Z3 and decided to remove it in the past few generations... I'm hoping they bring it to the XZ Premium but I'm not keeping my hopes up... Are you able to adjust the white balance (NOT colour and brightness) with video mode? You can't in past Xperias and the white balance will shift especially in indoor settings.
I gave up with Sony many many years ago, because they used to brake easily. After the Sony Ericsson tried a few and wasn’t feeling it, partner continued with same results, I guess she is more loyal than me. But I will say I enjoyed looking around the surroundings of the video more than the phone.
Would you say that this is a significant enough of an upgrade from the Z5 Compact? Im primarily looking for better battery life, better connectivity and better camera.
I find nothing wrong with the XZ1 design. I care less about bezel-less screens as well. I prefer the boxy technical look of Sony's phones. Most other phones are rounded / pebble like. I hate that sort of design. Sony, keep doing what you're doing! I bought this phone just days ago, based on my experience with my previous XA1. I bought that primarily based on Sony's design language as well. If Sony start to make phones that look like all of the other phones out there... then we lose choice as regards the design. Loving the XZ1.
In hindsight, the xz1 "dated" rectangle phone design is what people wanted all along as indicated by the xz2 rounded design which people didn't like. I think this video missed the headphone jack and camera button. That feature is what sets xperia apart. Great video though. Xz1 still going strong 2 yrs later.
You are 100% correct in my opinion. I want to own a Sony but if you look at their phone it all looks the same, a big slab of rectangle. Don't get me wrong other people like it and more people don't. I hope Sony wakes up and work on the phones outside appearance because their phone's software and camera is awesome.
Good review! Regarding the manual mode in the camera, are there any new settings close to the functionality of the G6? Like the long exposure for example?
I love the design, I use XA1,love it,and few other Sony,s before . If they change the design that will be the reason to look for different brand. It's just perfect in my hand!!!
I still don't get why you would buy this instead of xz premium with the 4k screen. It costs the same, even less somewhere. And the difference in size is negligible.
I would go for the premium...just for the screen. But personally I do prefer a 5 inch phone. I do feel the size difference between my Gigaset Me (5 inch) and my Oneplus 3T for one handed use...
I will pick xz1 over xz premium. Reason 1: Though 4k screen is great but it's better to compromise with it because it could tend to get the device hot while watching videos, it provide less battery life time comparing to xz1 specifically in video playback time. Reason 2: As a build material the alkeleido metal is much better on the xz1 than the glass body of xz premium for durability and feel of holding it. Reason 3: Bit improved performance and camera.
I don't know why people are so obsessed with 4k, total overkill, unnecessary and meaningless with any phone size screen. you need at least 50inch screen to be able to enjoy 4k otherwise it's worthless.... people are just sheep that think bigger number is better without thinking about it...
My first phone was Sony t68i. I have been using Sony phones since 10 years. Currently, using Sony z5 but thinking to switch over to pixel 2. Not sure if xz1 beat pixel 2. Will wait for your review on that
I like the bezels on the phone, this way my fingers do not come on the screen while playing games or watching movies. The form factor is perfect as well... Sony might not be getting new customers but they are still making a profit and not losing any cusomers
I actually like the bezels. Together with the hardware camera shutter button, it's possible to take photos with just one hand. That is difficult if you have a bigger screen with smaller bezels as your palm can end up pressing the screen, and closing the camera app.
thank you for this great review, i am interested to buy this model but i wanted to ask you. does the XZ1 overheat or get warm when used or no? i will really appreciate an answer from you :) thx
how is it in 2019? is this worth buying compared to oneplus 6T.. Am a big fan of sony but sometimes price and specs matter.. please help i dont know what to buy!
Thank you. I just have to disagree on the design bit. I've never had a smartphone that isn't an iPhone, and the reason is mostly design. But for the last few days I've been looking for non iPhone phones as iOS 11 is getting the best of me, and the one that I really lean towards to buying is this one. I first looked on Samsung and LG, but I really don't like the design (also, I don't like that iPhones keep getting bigger and bigger, I own an SE and don't want a bigger one). I decided to look into Sony phones, because I remembered that the last non-smart phone that I had was a Sony (Ericsson Walkman something). And I was not disappointed to see that they still have this square kinda chubby design. Your review has helped me a lot. Yes, like why on earth would I want a 3D computer-made version of my face, and I really just hate slow motion (never like them when I see videos that use this feature on Instagram), but the rest of it seems just good. I just wish they had it in a pale rose pink, or like real white. Anyway, thank you so much. Just wanted to say that the design isn't that bad. Or maybe regular users are tired of it, but I like the fact that I can always count on Sony when I want to go back to this style.
I feel you bro. Just the design is lacking the charm. Nothing feels as good as SONY otherwise.. Remembering my Xperia Z1 for that matter. Never used anything as brilliant as that phone again. Build, Interface and Camera ..... Wish SONY reaches where it belongs.
I Currently have a LG G3 & thinking of maybe getting a XZ1 to replace it, would ot be considered a upgrade though? Will be mainly used for web browsing/watching videos through a wifi conection with some gaming & the ocasional picture taking & video recording.
How is the battery life on this? Only 2700 mAh for a screen like this seems like it would limit the battery to only 1 day or less after a while. (Just like when the Samsung Galaxy S6 came out)
Cool :) I just bought one of these randomly at a second hand shop and am glad to hear its a good'un... Funnily enough it was the classy metallic look that drew me to it ;()
I used to have a Z1 Compact, I loved it because of that square design. Also, at the time it had small bezels compared to other phones. The water resistance was great too, at the time no one did that but Sony. There was even augmented reality. But... it is like Sony stopped there. I don't see much that is new and it is now years after. I am sad because I love Sony. They make great products but I want something new to capture my imagination, this phone doesn't do it :-(
What is the sound like, I mostly use my phone apart for taking and making calls to listen to music? Couldn't give a toss about the camera, apologies! Please tell us about sound quality! :D
Design is something like..... taste. We have got A to Z about 'salty' :D Personally I always love Sony's Masculine design. Rectangle, bolder corner. But now it also get the feminine touch like glossy surface that makes it looks premium. I don't like the super glossy fingerprint magnet, but I do love its corners. The round side is certainly adopted from 2005 Sony Ericsson K600i upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b0/Sony_Ericsson_K600i%2C_front%2C_switched_off.JPG/220px-Sony_Ericsson_K600i%2C_front%2C_switched_off.JPG Which was one good phone I owned at that time.
I dont mind bezel if it means front facing stereo speakers. Maybe they can figure out pop out stereo speakers that face vertical normally at the top and bottom but can be popped out to face forward.
The disign is fine. Not the best for me because I prefer the Z to the Z5 edges, but still fine even with those 90 degrees top and down edges. The sreen ratio is the biggest problem there, I'd say.
I made this video in collab with Linus from : ua-cam.com/channels/gfZazkz3uwmbVmvkl0cTbg.html Check him out :)
Hi, Linus from the TechLineHD here.
Nice review. But what is with this "no bezel" crap that - quote: "nobody seams to like". Don't get me wrong. No bezels looks good, but since a bezel-less design comes at cost of "no stereo front speakers" and "no front camera" as well no option for other features like "face recognition" to unlook a device etc and the fact that it is easier to hold while gaming or watching movies on the move. drives me batty how reviewers and alike seem to be pushing or pointing out larger bezels. I like holding my phone and not having it trigger the screen.
Wtf, Sony's design is one of the main reasons i would buy this
Same here, super aesthetically pleasing phone imo
Exactly! They somehow made a phone with bezels that looks gorgeous! Unlike Apple LOL
Felyne Master ikr...the bezels look unique in its own way. This is the reason i wanna buy them lol
That shits ugly
I miss this design... 😔😔
I used the Xperia Z for almost 3 years and after that i've got the Xperia Z5. Ive been using it for one year now and i hope to use it for the next few years... I love the design. I will always buy Sony Xperia. For me it's the best smartphone

taunusv4power btw now with at Singtel the iPhone 5 cost $22 only with a simple contract
How was your experience like after updates did it ger slow or battery life issue?
You don't get this design at at all. It's the main selling point of this device. It's rugged and looks sharp. This is attractive to many men who don't like the common round corner, soft style.
What are you smoking ?
"If you do not change the design you will lose customers" ???
They will lose customers if they change it. I buy Sony phone because they have that space between the screen and edge of the phone, that space helps me a lot to hold the phone and watch movies and play games.
Imagine this: There are people out there who do not like phones with the edge to edge screens.
Thry already went with the shitty design.
the fact that sony keeps changinh design since xz2, xz3, now xperia 1 and the reception seems not good, proved your words is totally wrong, big time...
Grandad inda house 🤣
I like my screen compact, with thicc bessels my thumbs are perfectly aligned with joysticks from games, with thin bessels my thumbs have to move to an uncomfortable position at the edge of the sceen
i love the Sony design rather than Samsung iPhone Vivo Xiomi Lg Huawei etc..
So true. Those phone that u are mentioned has a shit Design, just plagiarizing the iphone designs.
Sony is like Linux, they are good, and don't really compete with other manufactures.
I love android. My favorite android is sony. But every phone or iPhone is good
Actually i like the Sony design. And i am going to switch from the S7 to the XZ1.
why switch from s7 ? just want something new ?
The Gallery app is great, the battery management has always been great, walkman app is nice, the mail app is great, etc
* The Sony physical design has always been perfect to me.
If taking a call on speaker while driving, its hard to hear over ambient noise - the U11 is much louder (though sound quality is better on the Sony)
2) The camera's lack of OIS means you cant set the shutter a low as competing phones (otherwise you get blurry shots).
Peter H that last point you can do on the latest UI from Sony. You can change between 3 till 5. It came with marshmallow I think.
But worse in batery and sometimes overheat
Just that..
XZ2's design is much worse than XZ1.
But the xz3 look better
Peace 😊✌️
@@makalayp6689 I have xz1 and xz2 compact.. Both great phones
@@emcg.9655 how's battery life on xz1?
@@Yoko.Kurama it's not bad at all, you will get full day without too much trouble
Only people that use Sony Xperia love the design, I love it! It's freakin' gorgeous!
I really like the Sony line design. This phone could be amazing without that monster brezels. This design with 80% of screen would be amazing.
agreed.
Pistaxin also bigger battery
Dont you like to have stereo speakers?
I think its still possible. gettin them a bit smaller and pushing the speaker grill more to the edge. I know they can do it.
Wentao Wang the bezel is easy for gaming, i like it too.
am i the only one who is a fan of sony design and hate other bezel less designs ??
No bro I'm here.
Square without bezels would be my pick. Just a pure 16:9 image without any borders or goofy notches. Some day.
No I'm with you man
Just bought this phone days ago (SOV36) the Japanese version of it just for PHP5300 or under $100 and included the original QC3.0 charger and basic Sony earphones...
2:48 Iam the only one who LOVES the design? I prefer that design over every phone design this quarter.
I think it looks very good. just smaller chin and top and its good.
I also love it ❤️
I am in love with it...
I'm totally with you. But I'm old and therefore I don't give a damn about trends. ;)
I love it, but have to say I do prefer the black one ☺️ I want all features that bezels can give a phone. Stereo speakers, buffert zones for drops and holding, better cooling and be able to record 4K continiously for over an hour. The other brands cant do that.☺️
Top and bottom bezels could be a bit smaller...but this won't stop me from buying this phone. I like usability, not fashion designs
I love this design. And I hate new soap-like design.
well, i do love that design you called "boring" at least it's the only and unique one in the market.. the rest are copycatting each others.. samsung, lg, huawei, nokia, other chinese brands..etc, and lastly the iphone x...
Sony is so unique.. and i do not care about those bezels.. i have an ♡ XZ Premium ♡ and it's the best of 2017
Today 2022 still the best phone..
2022 and this thing rocks like king.
I agree, pity that Sony no longer provide android update to this device
@@leftgoawayfc156 Nothing to worry still king..
I hate bezeless phones, that's why i love sony and i own the xz1, it's simply amazing and freaking fast
I have the original Z in white, and it still gorgeus and alive!! this one most be awesome!!!
I like the Sony design very much, very good quality and great durability.
TechMagnet I don't agree with you about the image quality, both have decent qualities but not necessarily S8 better than XZ1
Liion B Nope the design of XZ1 is not better just a little bit less heavier than the premium that's it
The only thing i hate with sony's flagship is the lack of manual control mode on its camera.
Jerry Berglund I think that the iPhone X design is really *TOP NOTCH*
It s a bit expensive
I love the design, if it works, dont change it, its whats on the inside, not the outside that counts. but if the compact had 64GB+ storage than 32GB it would be awesome. I will go for the compact, not for the money wise, but the design. a square body is better to hold in my opinion, and the camera is more into the body than the XZ1, better protection for the camera, and last.
fully aware, its the reason i said it would be better if it had 64GB, still going for the Compact, I like taking pictures, but gaming and videos I can do on my tablet/pc, less than 2 weeks, Im looking forward to it
Been using it for the past 2 years, though as a backup to my Xperia X Compact. I can't really complain, it's a beast of a phone 📱
No other reviewer does that. great job man.
there will be something.. no worries.
Markus Haier what is MIRAI?
Markus Haier just now i changed from sony Z5 premium to note 8 cause the design only . I know there are many amazing option in sony that i like as - slow motion and really good durability . I realized Samsung design is awesome -- but -- i have put cover for note 8 that kill all design :( 😞 . I really waiting new design of Sony.
Markus Haier MIRAI isnt just a rumor. Sony execs said that there will be major style changes on the next flagship.
Markus Haier iPhone too you know but now they're change the design
Previously I had used Xperia Z, but sadly I lost it.
why is almost every review of this phone complaining about the design, the design is sexy, WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT EVERY SINGLE PHONE TO BE THE SAME
I subscribed a lot of tech-channels, but your full-review of the xperia xz1 is the first one I see. Congrats ;)
thanks man. yea most channels care only about note 8 and iphone or lg v30 now
Are you out of your mind? I love this design! Its one of the main things for which I bought it....
This is one of the best Sony phone I've used so far, it's a beast.
Nokia brick can survive anything
Waaaaaw Just beautiful. For me Sony Is the best.
Still I will buy this or the compact when price is $550.00
Ernesto RT shut up
+1
kgbme TM People buying this won’t consider buying a laptop smartass
A range rover ran over mine several days after I got it. Gutting, I know. It only needed the lcd screen replaced, the rest of the phone was in perfect condition apart from few scratches on the aluminum back. Quite amazed actually.
I purchased the compact version last night. No regrets!
Thanks.
i like the large bezels, it makes the phone kind of stand out and look more unique than the others that all look almost the same
having Z5 dual premium, awesome.
How about the baterry and overheat issue?
Great video man..
I liked that 3D scanner....
Hey bro which camera do u use to record.....
I kind of liked it.....
thanks mate. Panasonic GH4
Thumbs up for the Apple and HTC hate!
But doesn't it have IP68? You say 65/66?
woops. i think i said 68
TechMagnet 2:35 ;). But you're also right, you say 55/58😅
Bro Swirski shit XD
You are 100% correct in my opinion. I want to own a Sony but if you look at their phone it all looks the same, a big slab of rectangle. Don't get me wrong other people like it and more people don't. I hope Sony wakes up and work on the phones outside appearance because their phone's software and camera is awesome.
Good review! Regarding the manual mode in the camera, are there any new settings close to the functionality of the G6? Like the long exposure for example?
i just got this on contract 24 months at 33 GBP, im happy, its a step up from my 7 year old phone hahah
Tomislav Pavic i waiting for xz1 premium
Xz1 has louder speakers and slightly improved camera.
How many minutes we can record 960fps slow motion video...? We can edit like I phone after record. ..?
Very nice review! One question: how about the heat issues? The phone stay cold when you play and make 4k videos?
I think the heat issue is solved since they release XZP
no heat issues. but still shows that warning that it may overheats. but didnt experience that
My first phone was Sony t68i. I have been using Sony phones since 10 years. Currently, using Sony z5 but thinking to switch over to pixel 2. Not sure if xz1 beat pixel 2. Will wait for your review on that
Even 2 years later, this thing looks so sexy and sharp! I happily married to an S9, but just looking at the XZ1 gets me all hot and bothered
Hey man, i'm thinking about getting this or the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Does the XZ1 overheat alot? I've owned a Z5 in the past and it blew up in my bag.
Great review ✌🏼
From my xz premium
thanks :)
That is difficult if you have a bigger screen with smaller bezels as your palm can end up pressing the screen, and closing the camera app.
thank you for this great review, i am interested to buy this model but i wanted to ask you. does the XZ1 overheat or get warm when used or no? i will really appreciate an answer from you :) thx
no overheating. Also no overheat in 4k mode (even though it still shows the warning)
Thank you so much for reassuring me on this regard and for your prompt reply.
how is it in 2019? is this worth buying compared to oneplus 6T.. Am a big fan of sony but sometimes price and specs matter.. please help i dont know what to buy!
i like the sony design so much that i will choose sony over any brand if it is about design.....i love their BRICK design much...
I love the design. gives you some place to have your fingers while gaming without miss touching you know
I like the phone built-in mic sound better than your studio. Hear the clarity when you walk out from the house... Lol
If you don't like Sony's phone designs, things may be looking up for 2018
I Currently have a LG G3 & thinking of maybe getting a XZ1 to replace it, would ot be considered a upgrade though? Will be mainly used for web browsing/watching videos through a wifi conection with some gaming & the ocasional picture taking & video recording.
Looking for a new phone, love Sony but I'ts all about the camera for me. Whats the best Value for money, camera phone at the moment.
One of the best reviews I have ever watched!
I already miss the design from the X... It was so pretty. For some reason, my favorite is the pink.
How is the battery life on this? Only 2700 mAh for a screen like this seems like it would limit the battery to only 1 day or less after a while. (Just like when the Samsung Galaxy S6 came out)
Next Sony phone will have 18:9 screen and a front 4k video recording
hopefully ;) not allowed to say anything on it, but stay tuned for MWC !
TechMagnet not allowed means that THERE IS something like that on the line right ?
That's just overkill...
Everyone is bragging edge to edge displays but Sony and Blackberry's designs mean SERIOUS BUSINESS.
Waiting for Mirai - hopefully Sony's new design language
MWC
The processor inside Sony Xperia xz1 is Snapdragon 835 and NOT 845. Please correct it. 845 comes in XZ2 and NOT in XZ1.
WTF dude right off the bat after not even ONE minute a commercial ...
The round side is certainly adopted from 2005 Sony Ericsson K600i upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b0/Sony_Ericsson_K600i%2C_front%2C_switched_off.JPG/220px-Sony_Ericsson_K600i%2C_front%2C_switched_off.JPG
Which was one good phone I owned at that time.
