As a professional Roofing Specialist contractor for many many years
Flat Roofs, pitch Roofs ,slate and tile including shingles.
In the days before Torch on modern day flat Roofing materials.
We used the bitumen pots to heat the bitumen.
Roll and pour,
Anyway, bitumen in cans,
Place 3 engineering bricks underneath bottom of can of bitumen,
We had burners for pots but if you have a blow lamp ( blow torch)
Put it underneath can and make sure you wear gloves and most importantly remove either the lid cap or whole lid,
As it slowly melts you can pour it into your proper bitumen pot,
You don't need to cut the tin away or break the bitumen up , the Tiny bits of bitumen literally goes everywhere,
Even on bottom of your boots , get that on the rug at home and your wife won't be happy,
To remove bitumen, white spirit on a clean rag.
Loving the videos and thumbs up from the UK 🇬🇧
I can’t believe I have been watching since logging and now Arabella has a deck. Watching This has been my Friday morning routine since forever it feels like.
Her shape and character are starting to show, especially now that the deck has gone on. She is gorgeous x
Looking really good. It's amazing how much of a difference the pitch makes to the look of the deck.
never stop, never give up, Happy Sailing
"I remember when this was a tree" would look great on a hat or tee shirt. i absolutely love this project! thank you
Deck looks beautiful! That with the round-over on the covering boards really brings the shape of the boat to life!
Now THATS a heat gun! I have admired (and coveted) your selection of tools as the project has progressed. You obviously understand that having the right tool for the job is critical. Bravo Zulu Steve.
I got one of those Wagner heat guns for my boat last year, too, and I’m so glad for it. -Anne
That deck is absolutely beautiful!
I'm really loving the style of editing in the videos at the moment. It's developed over such a long time and a long way.
I love to have spotted an English product being used for sealing the deck. Jeffrey's Marine Glue. Made in Colchester, the county town of Essex, my own county!
That deck looks incredible.
Good morning Acorn to Arabella crew! I am so enjoying your passion and vision and the craftmanship of your work! I found your channel when Jamestown Distributors pointed me your way in one of their emails some time ago and I haven't looked back. I have learned so much from you guys as a DIY sailboat owner of a 1983 Seasprite 34 - not a wooden boat but an oldie but goodie built in Bristol RI. Your ethos and attention to detail, your willingness to tackle things as they come with the confidence that you can figure out a solution to any problem that arises, your aesthetic for the traditional and for hand craft work, your good-natured humor and your need for adventure really speak to me. A good way to live a life as I see it. There will always be naysayers, but my experience is that it's hard to regret doing something you love for all the right reasons. Keep it up! See you next Friday morning with my coffee in hand from Kodiak's saloon!
"Just Like He Seams", that is awesome! Great job everyone! It is really coming along great. I flipped out when I first saw the painters tape thinking it was painted. That was a great idea to use that. It saved you tons of time in cleanup.
The cost of that tape might also be cause for flipping, that stuff is expensive. Hope they have a fire watch with that open flame burner, hate to see the project go up in flames at this point, to much invested.
I grew up in the 90's, so I kinda chuckled when you said the taping was done for the bung-holes.
also, my heart dropped when I saw the video-thumbnail, as I thought you'd gone and painted the deck sky-blue...!! I'm relieved to see it was just tape! 😅
and the boat looks absolutely amazing! what a fantastic job so far!!
Pretty awesome process, excited to see how it gets faired and oiled.
An excellent way to finish the week. Thank you Team from New Zealand
Deck is looking sweet, what a great milestone. Congrats. To the whole Team.
Happy Friday, A2A crew! She's looking really good. Well done, everybody.
FYI for the past few days they’ve been preparing the fields around me for the cotton harvest. It’s good to see y’all putting it to use.
it's always nice that you explain why you are doing things the way you do, what road you chose and explain what variables one has to consider on their own road. the dryness of the wood, the thickness of it, what type.
Thanks, Luc! We try to shine a light on other possibilities in case anyone is on their own boat journey!
Wow, I've only seen that on old recreation medieval boats before (like longboats), and thought the black lines were stylistic choices. It didn't occur to me that that was the caulking for the boat, really cool.
Good job from the crew of Norna! Believe us we know how much freaking work that is 🤪🤪 That one muscle on your back. And just to think we had to rake all ours out first as it’d been ten years and two Atlantic crossings. Nice to see the tar rig still in action. You won’t regret the Jeffreys and hammering it hard. We hammered it with cotton and oakum and had zero problems. We worried too about exploding our deck, but didn’t really care at that point. It was either going to stop leaking or explode 😂😂😂
"Water, water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink, water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink." Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.
When you mentioned that the deck would bake in the sun, that bit stuck in my head.
That video went very quickly, I'll have to watch it again! I now have a better understanding of how the caulk and pitch routine should go. You have it figured out based on your careful research and hard work. I'm so fortunate to have found your channel and your ethical approach to building Arabella! Thanks for your continued excellent video productions and your incredible focus on this project! Blessings to you all!
Amazing how much that changes the appearance of the deck!! Hey, many years ago I worked with a substance similar to the pitch. We'd heat it in old electric roasters. It kept it at a constant temp. You don't have an open flame. You can buy them on eBay for a lot less than a tank of propane. Give it a shot I think you will like the idea. Keep up the good work!!
The deck will look amazing come finished product.
I think that your approach to this is stellar.
I enjoy the puns during the credits. That's always a fun little tidbit for me.
Also, I just love how neat and finished the deck looks with the seams pitched.
Looks so good man! Just amazes me what one crazy guy can do if he puts his mind to it
Great video, I'm interested to see how much the "feel" of below deck has changed now that the deck is actually on. Great work, and as always I will look forward to next Friday :D
Folks on Patreon ($5 a mo and above) had a real good look belowdecks last month for Live from the Boat Shed, which we do every 2nd Friday. 🙌
I remember watching the channel when Steven was cutting trees down for this project. And all the plastic versions of shops for the build...Steve she's looking amazing I'm sure you have learned so much and you love what you're doing.. because she looks clean and almost ready to lick the sea...my life has changed a lot since I started watching I don't get to catch all the videos but I do keep the bell reminder on so I can watch when I have a moment...beautiful work bro....
Thanks for watching! I also put out a lil newsletter every week that gives the news if you don’t get to every video. The link is in the description. -Anne
Outstanding. Keep up the great work guys!
Amazing episode! Peeling off the tapes feels so much better than taking foil off any new display when unwrapping! I guess many people (including myself) would pay a lot to get their hands on this exercise.
Thank You for sharing this us. Good job, as always! Greetings from Slovakia.
Well, that was a treat. Beautiful deck. Well done.
Guys, looks so good and one step closer to the launch date. Can't wait to see the hull fairing and caulking as work continues on the project.
The deck is looking fantastic guys. True craftsmanship. Can’t wait to see it oiled.
I love the smell of burning pitch in the morning. Smells like victory.
Nice to see Jefferey's Marine Glue, from Davey and Co at their place at the end of our road near Colchester, England!
@@AcornToArabella They recommend a minimum of 10mm/ 3/8" depth in the seam for 50mm wide planking. I didn't hear you discuss that, though it looks as if you were reasonably deep.
Beautiful deck. Congratulations!
Deck looks fantastic
It makes sense caulking the deck the way you did. knowing how pine moves and works. I trust your decision! So glad the tape came off as easy as it did. We all know how that goes if it had stayed on longer and was in the sun for some time🤦🏻♂️. She looking beautiful, Sir…!
That looks so clean and nice, it's going to be a great contrast when it's done.
When it comes to judgement calls on Arabella, I think you've been right more often than not. I got my Victoria shirts today, I hope to be there at the launch next summer.
Yet another awesome A2A video, Arabella just gets more beautiful with every passing episode!
That taping was a great idea. Also the deck looked quite fetching in blue :D
What a project & a messy one. Really looked nice with just pulling the tape off. I know there's more to do but wow it looks great. Good idea taping the deck. Major portion finished.
Great job guys. I've been in the Alaska wilderness w no cell service. Good to catch up and see your progress. I'm impressed. The quality of work will show when she finally gets underway. Keep going. We all love and adore you
Beautiful boat man
Having spent the last 3 years in the Port Townsend Boat Yard, I could smell this video being made! 🤣
_"Having spent the last 3 years in the Port Townsend Boat Yard..."_
Has it been three years??? WOW! I remember when you first went into the yard you told us (vid here: ua-cam.com/video/Yq1gc10DqB4/v-deo.html) all the REALLY COOL things you were going to do. Here's a list of just the exterior stuff:
- Glass over the toerail
- Carbon fiber stanchions and new lifelines
- Foredeck anchor washdown diverter
- New portlights
- New topsides paint
- New fiberglass darades
I was taking a look at this new YT short of yours with a pretty decent view of the topside of your boat (ua-cam.com/users/shorts3mAZ0qWYPps?feature=share). Doesn't look like much, if anything got done. Was there a problem?
Good morning from Norway. Great video as always. That deck looks AMAZING 🤩🤩🤩
Taping the whole deck was a logical choice and it worked out exceptionally well. That deck will definitely be water tight once you set sail.
I know that this isn't your plan but I have always thought that a large wooden boat would look nice with the entire outside wrapped in fiberglass like cedar strip kayaks are. Since wooden boats are often made out of such beautiful woods and it would be nice to be able to see them. Fiberglass would also guarantee that it wouldn't lesk anytime soon.
That works great, as you’ve said, on strip building, and there are larger, cruising-sized strip-built boats in the world for sure. Carvel planking doesn’t do as well with fiberglass over it.
That is one thing (pitching the deck) that is a real thing of beauty.
Looks terrific
Great episode! more progress! deck seams look amazing! Stay safe and keep rolling Arabella crew! 👍👍👊👊
❤️ So THAT's why those super yachts have those beautiful black stripes!
Wow! The deck is looking fantastic! I think blue tape is my most valuable tool in my shop.
That looks so good, great work!
The smell in that workshop must have gone from great to totally awesome with all that pitch!
It’s kinda more like the tar on the road (bitumen) than a lovely burned wood resin smell. Wish it were the latter!
When I first opened this episode, "Oh no they have painted the deck blue!" LOL
Glad you enjoyed and had success, that's one job I don't miss the knee time.
great work crew
Well done guys! Impressive job🎉
That is looking gorgeous.
Looks great on the deck, y'all did that really well (so such thing as overkill lol!). Getting so close, it's exciting!!!
The deck looks beautiful! As you were describing the expansion of the hull planks once submerged I thought how cool it would be if there were a camera temporarily fixed to the exterior of the hull focused on a seam doing a timelapse for the first 48 hours underwater. I wonder if we would see the seam tighten up?
@@AcornToArabella I'm sure you'll have a few other things to keep you busy on launch day lol.
Ok, quick note. The easy way to get pitch out of a steel can is take a larger steel can (15-gallon drum type) fill with water, place pitch can inside and suspend. then build a fire around the larger can and viola, instant double boiler. use what you need, remove from boiling vessel to cool, re-lid then store for later use.
@@AcornToArabella Your quite welcome. after hot mopping a few tined roof sheds one finds out a few things. ^~^
Awesome! It almost feels surreal to see how far Arabella has gotten! I remember you cutting the first trees for her and pouring the lead keel. Amazing!
Just one thing i feel the need to mention: Please get more fire extinguishers. Seeing you work with pitch and open flames in a workshop mostly made of wood with a wooden ship and a lot of scraps and shavings around makes me feel a bit nervous, tbh.
Maybe an auto system, just one electrical fire, or other ignition and all of this work goes up in smoke.
We have them at hand all over the place. They may not always be on camera… but Steve’s grandpa Dave was the fire chief. We have our own safety expert on hand. Thanks for your care and your support!
I share your anxiety. One tiny little spark in the wrong place and that thing would go up like the hindenburg. Fire extinguishers would be like trying to put out a forest fire with a dollar store squirt gun. They need to use extra caution with their oil finish. Oily rags can spontaneously ignite. I know Steve is as smart as it gets, but he might not be as cautious as I would be.
@@AcornToArabella That is good to know! Seems like you're in the best of hands then!
Just Curious, did your heart hurt as much as mine. Such a beautiful boat and deck, then to see it all black with pitch and I almost cried. VERY GLADS to see it came off as easily as you had hoped.
I'm learning how to make candles, after watching you guys deal with that sticky black pitch I ain't going to winge about my wax ever again 😂 She's looking really nice guys
Good looking deck!
“Just 🎉 like 🎉 he 🎉 seams” - Oh Ben, I love you! 😂
Congratulations to all of the caulkers, ANB’s shots & Ben’s edit made that look like a quick, light job but of course it was anything but!
Lovely to see that some old recipes are just perfect - they demand respect though, hot tar can stick to you like a ….. thing. But there’s no worry at the Arabella shed, where calm and well planned everything goes.
Have a lovely weekend, folks!
Hard work. Well done.
Hi,raised pitch will help to keep any water out of the seams great viewing.cheers Roly 🇬🇧.
True! We’re thinking it’ll raise up a smidge when the boat swells in a more humid environment.
Love this channel, love the project, love the crew. Have to say, this is the first time I've looked at a procedure and gone..."hmmmm." Hope it works out
Looks like it would have been easier to smooth out the pitch as you were pouring it,but I'm just an old retired trucker from Texas that's been watching ever since you started cutting the lumber and pouring the lead for the keel. It's been an amazing experience watching while drinking my coffee.Great job😁
Pitch party. Steve's afternoon high tea kettle pouring skills have got to be elevated to boss level after all that.
As someone who started watching at the keel pour video it’s amazing how far the project has come
Cheers!
@@AcornToArabella That's when I started too! Crazy guys pouring a lot of molten lead.
Yup, same here! It's certainly more than a lump of lead now!
Same. I got it on my recommendation page and was maybe only 4 or 5 videos behind. Been here since.
same here. i never was into wood working or boats, but im big into forged work and casting metals... things have changed!
