Great video, I'm about to tackle a 2013 Cmax 6 speed box. Main Shaft bearing is on it's way out at 67000 miles 😮, I can hear it. This video gives me confidence I can do it. It's no loss if I can't anyway, as a second hand box is 500 quid, or 400 to have my own refurbished. So I'm going to tackle it myself first and see it I can sort it for 200 quid 😊
That's weird I was servicing my MK3 focus 1.6 last week and noticed the front of the box very wet then found the reverse switch had wound itself out and was ready for falling out probably resulting in same outcome. Great vid 👍
Nothing like the smell of burnt gearbox oil and destructed bearings first thing in the morning. Autopsy finding...the patient could not be revived😒😒Thanks Alan.
Love a gearbox video. I had a box where i lost reverse and when i took it apart i never spotted anything to suggest why i lost that gear.......no swarf and oil level was fine just no visible damage....
That video is like gold dust to me. I have mk3 with the same engine and gearbox. I have plan to ope it and change the seals ont it, because it's leaking from there. Great vixeo...
remember when your 1980s ford FWD car speedo went off ? worn diff bearings, done loads, mornings work, try that now! [those big circlips brought the memories back] bet it's had a clutch in, switch copped it, superglued back together, say nowt to owner, deny all later... right amount of bearings, just not evenly spaced around the [melted] cage, common fault on minis/metros, dreadful whine, but no harm done, full day for them mind... bloody warranties monni is a naughty girl, what happens to naughty girls....
Yup, and the debris sometimes fly straight through safety goggles - so there's that. Imagine what that shrapnel could do to your skull. 😮 So, Alan; protect yourself - we need more of your videos. 😉
Had a 2010 Fiesta 1.6 Ti-VCT have a 2nd gear pop out issue when going down the gearbox. Needed a 2nd gear selector mechanism! Common fault apparently. Same box as the focus!
I remember my old astra 92 year 1.7td seized in reverse the aa guy managed to prise it ba k ino forward gears but I ended up scrapping it as it was 16 years old and the body was going the diesel motor was an isuzu and bombproof.
I thought syncro's shouldn't spin as they're designed to match the next gear speed for when you move the shift fork across? Hence why it grips on the taper.

Not many mk3 1.6 petrols about. And add there were possibly 2 or 3 variants too, no wonder you found it tricky to find the right box. Worrying someone else in the comments has just dealt with the very issue but luckily caught it early!
when the cars was launched the old 1.6 sigma engine was standard across the board, it was only until circa 2013/14 the ecoboost started being offered in its place. Could still get them until 2017 with the old 1.6 on the focus studio spec!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering true. Most of the 1.6s in the mk3s were paired to that disaster of a powersh1t box 😝 Owned many a 1.6 in different guises over the years and they’ve been very sold motors
hi alan ive got 2x mg zrs great engines one has the ib5 gearbox ford focus not sure what model. 04 so im guessing mk1 focus. thanks for update on the reverse switch. my other zr has the french 206 box which ive replaced all bearings see how it goes lol do prefer ford or the honda great video alan👌👌
Hello..... Help!!! I have a 2010 focus , gearbox shot, bought a scrap one from a Focus and same year,,,, the serial numbers are different... Will it work?? Thanks in advance....
these days we don't hear of any cars with knackered bearings in the gearbox from towing. I remember second hand cars in the 80's, if it had a tow bar. don't buy it I guess the design must have got better.
2nd Gear selector mechanism. Cost me £700 to fix as garage took box out and back in. Had the same on a 1.6 Ti-VCT Titanium, 2nd gear pop out and graunch when going down the box. Fine going up the box!

The reversing light switch is on the top of the Mk 3 gearbox I think when I changed it. Good.

Having worked on many fiestas and focus's, I have seen more than one broken reverse light switches on the ib5 boxes.

Ah the good old MTX 75, easy to repair if you can get 5th gear off with oxy and a puller, from a time when things were a lot easier
Thats a iB5 box. MTX75 is a completely different box! More rugged and found in the 2.0 petrol.
Did you locate the source of the swarf? Or could it have been ground up bearing balls?
i never did find the missing ball bearings so guess they were the swarf

what gearbox is this? Is that a ford unit? Looks completely different to the IB5 unit as fitted to earlier focus 1.6 manuals!

I have a mk4 Mondeo with this tranny oddly, will keep tabs on that reverse light switch.
moral of the story, make sure your reverse lights work if you own a ford, otherwise you could have a broken switch and a broken box soon after

The problem is know one bothers to drain and renew their gearbox oil they do oil changed but ignore gearbox oil
