While the University of Chicago did disband football in 1930's, the school revived the sport in the 1970's. Today, the Maroons compete in NCAA Division III; and had a winning record (6-4) in 2023. By the way, the wartime Manhattan Project set up shop in the Maroons' abandoned stadium, Stagg Field; and, it was under the old grandstand that the first controlled nuclear chain reaction was achieved in 1943. Your mention of the Chicago Bears' logo resembling that of the University of Chicago is interesting (with the school coming up with theirs first), but for a different reason: the Maroons' nickname, "Monsters of the Midway," is now associated with the NFL Bears. That term relates to the university's location on Midway Plaisance, a broad boulevard just south of the school. Much of the Columbian Exposition was held there in 1893 (just as UC was opening).
University of the Pacific in Stockton California was D1-A (FBS) in the 1990's, when the multi millionaire board member passed away and school ended the program soon after. Big West Conference.
I wondered about that. Several other sports temporarily suspended operations during the war. I also noticed he said 1941 but one of the people in the photo is wearing a jersey that says 1944.
One big contribution to Wichita State cutting football was when at least half the team was tragically killed in a place crash in 1970. Unfortunately this crash was greatly overshadowed by the Marshall Thundering Herd football plane crash that took the entire team. The reason for that is because both crashes were rather close to each other
In 1990, legendary NFL coach George Allen was hired as coach at Long Beach State, which had one of the worst programs in Division I at the time. He led the team to a winning record but died a few weeks after the season ended. The university played football for one more year before dropping the program after the 1991 season.
I would have mentioned the Univ. of San Francisco Dons. They had an undefeated season in 1951 and were invited to the Orange Bowl. They were in severe financial straits and the money from the Orange Bowl could have kept them afloat. But they declined the bid because the Orange Bowl wouldn't allow their two black players to play. So they chose to disband rather than consider playing in the Orange Bowl without some of their teammates.
I feel like I need to clarify the narrative about the University of Nebraska-Omaha's football team's disbanding. The Mavericks were set to move up to Division 1 via the Summit League. The decision was made at the time to discontinue the Football program in addition to others, including the Wrestling program which had won 6 of the last 8 D-2 championships before their end in 2011. While money was cited as the primary factor, the political reasons speculated that the University of Nebraska system, which also has oversight on the much larger University of Nebraska-Lincoln, home of the Cornhuskers, did not want to create a competitor on the D-1 level. Thus the decision to disband the football team. Also, fun fact: The athletic director who made the ultimate decision to disband those athletic programs at UNO is none other than current UNL athletic director, Trev Alberts.
Actually, the end zone seats at Boston University had previously been the left field bleachers at Boston Braves' Field, what was popularly known as "the jury box," before the Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953 (and later Atlanta).
Boston University? Northeastern University? Two Boston schools that had a program but not anymore. Boston University last season was like 1997 & Northeastern University was like 2009
Lees-McRae was D2 and the school covers up the fact that a football program existed in the first place. Lots of rumors about why it stopped, but something seriously bad happened that the school won’t talk about
Chicago still plays. D-III these days,. Since the '70s. Northwestern is in the Chicago, IL suburbs BTW. The Maroons had a rivalry with the Wildcats. And the Illinois Illini,
The California State Universities that dropped football: Long Beach, Fullerton, Northridge, Los Angeles, Sonoma, Chico, San Francisco, Humboldt, Pomona, East Bay (Hayward).
SMU had its program shut down in 1987 for basically bribing players to come play for them, they came back a couple of years later but it took them a long time to get good again
The payments, per se, is not why SMU got the death penalty. SMU was told to stop, put on probation, and responded by continuing to issue the payroll checks to players that got them in trouble in the first place.
I think they were probably in the same situation as UAB where the state’s university system really just cared only about Alabama and Auburn. I’ve heard people from Alabama say this, that the university system really doesn’t care that Troy, South Alabama, Jacksonville State, and UAB have FBS football programs. Not sure what division Omaha was in, but I’m sure Nebraska just didn’t want them going up to FBS someday and taking away some of their attention and TV viewers.
I mainly knew Wichita State for baseball...and interestingly enough, Gonzaga briefly went and called themselves the Fighting Irish when they still had football.
Don’t forget about the University of Minnesota-Crookston. D2 sister school of the University of Minnesota, folded after the 2019 season, I played there, and yeah we were bad and broke lmao
Should do an updated video and include Hofstra and Northeastern, which both disbanded two weeks apart in late 2009. Hofstra produced many NFL players, most notably Wayne Chrebet and Marquis Colston.
It is NOT true that "normally" football pays for other sports. Most college football programs don't even break even for themselves. Most big football programs make up their deficit through fees on students.
The University of Chicago plays in D3. And why was it a mistake for them to drop out of D1 football? It's an academic school. Sports come second there. And Neb-Omaha dropped football in favor of its hockey program. And why no mention of Marquette football, Detroit football?
University of Texas at Arlington is one of the largest Universities in the US and right in the Heart of Football country. End their program in the 80's.
I actually went to every Nebraska-Omaha home football game from 2002-10! When it was rumored that we would be moving to Division 1, it was just assumed that we join FCS. It was a very sad day when the football (and wrestling) program got canceled, those games were so much fun to go to as a kid.
Transylvania University, back when it was known as Kentucky University, fielded one of the first football teams in the South. I don't know when they folded their program but it was long ago.
Creighton also one time had a football team, but not for very long. In fact, their soccer team plays where their football team used to. Duquesne is another division 1 University that used to have football
Usually it is a liberal female Athletic Director that pushes for the termination of football programs, seen it with quite a few California universiteis.
Birmingham Southern College use to be D1 but voluntarily dropped to D3. All of BSC is on the verge of shutting down completely sometime in the very near future because of finances.

I read about the Columbian Exposition in a biography of Nikola Tesla, how his AC polyphase system lit up the entire venue.
University of the Pacific in Stockton California was D1-A (FBS) in the 1990's, when the multi millionaire board member passed away and school ended the program soon after. Big West Conference.
Gonzaga is a bit weird because they didn't disband their football program because of cost, but because too many players were being drafted into WWII
You would think how profitable thier basketball program is that they could find a football program
I wondered about that. Several other sports temporarily suspended operations during the war. I also noticed he said 1941 but one of the people in the photo is wearing a jersey that says 1944.
@@ramblinman4197 Im pretty sure they officially ended in 1945 but they didnt play any games since 1941
@@jamesshively ok thanks 👍
Technically UV of Chic exists but D3
University of Chicago still plays now in d3. I played against them my freshman year. They also had the first heisman winner.
University of Tampa had a college program and produced an NFL #1 overall draft pick.

Unfortunately this crash was greatly overshadowed by the Marshall Thundering Herd football plane crash that took the entire team. Saint Louis university had a football team and was the first team to complete a forward pass.
Didn't even mention how the Wichita St plane crash also contributed to the program's death. 😭
I live in Jacksonville and had no idea JU stopped playing football lol
You should watch JaguarGator’s documentary very good!
How much of this was stolen?
Didn't have to go far in the vid. Jacksonville Dolphins was ripped out of their wikipedia page.
University of Pacific and Long Beach State here in Cali as well.
St Mary’s, csu Fullerton, and I think USF too
Pacific had some of the best coaches that went to NFL.. Pete Carroll, Buddy Ryan, Jon Gruden, Tom Flores, Hue Jackson, and Amos Alonzo Stagg
@@gianlucadimauro8440 Fullerton Titans! They have a mega baseball program going, though.

How does one say they are not from California without actually saying it? Use the term cali. A term no Californian uses.

Marquette grad here: we played football until 1960.
Findlandia university had a D3 football team in 2022 and in 2023 Findlandia University doesn't exist
Dan Pastorini's college was Santa Clara, 1992 was their last season.
Carlisle University, the school Pop Warner coached at and Jim Thorpe played for.

Actually, the end zone seats at Boston University had previously been the left field bleachers at Boston Braves' Field, what was popularly known as "the jury box," before the Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953 (and later Atlanta).
they have more than enough money for a football and baseball team
I thought Jacksonville still had their Pioneer League football program. Didn't know that they discontinued their program in 2019.
Western Washington University lost their program in the late 00s
Marquette also used to have a football team but it was disbanded in 1960.

As others have stated, Boston University should be included. Played in a former Major League and NFL stadium.
The California State Universities that dropped football: Long Beach, Fullerton, Northridge, Los Angeles, Sonoma, Chico, San Francisco, Humboldt, Pomona, East Bay (Hayward).
New York area, Hofstra University and St. John’s University both disbanded due to the expense of fielding the teams.
