Even though he's technically playing a character, I feel like this is most closest to a regular guy we have ever seen him. After being known for playing the hard hitters (Phantom, Raoul, JVJ, etc) it's really nice to see him playing a "normal person" and being just as good at it. This song speaks to me and now that there's a video of Ramin singing it, it's double the pleasure, double the fun.
+Megan Andrews I thought the same thing. Was interesting to see him sing the song and play the character that is, for lack of a better term, "a regular dude". I prefer his tone for the other roles, but still top notch.
This is 10000% the best version I’ve heard. SO many levels emotionally and vocally ♥️
About time Ramin started singing some Sondheim!
He HAS to play the role of Sweeney!
ThePersianTenor he does not strike me a Sweeney. In terms of Sondheim I would say he would work best as Bobby/Robert from Company and possibly the Princes in Into the Woods. I don’t think he quite has the lower range for Sweeney, as he is a rather high baritone. And the bigger issue is that Sondheim does not often call for more contemporary, beltier voices like Ramin’s. I do agree he should sing some though.
Boundary It's comical that Sondheim doesn't appreciate contemporary voices, but will cast performers like Stephen Colbert, who seem to have trouble carrying a tune.
BeautifulDisaster think it’s a bit bit bold to be saying he does not appreciate them, as he never really had the chance to write for them. Back in the day voices like Chip Zein, Angela Lansbury, and Bernadotte Peters WERE standard contemporary voices. The theatre industry has changed since the last original Sondheim production.

I don't think anyone will ever beat Raul when it comes to this song, but God does Ramin have a gorgeous voice. So textured and smooth without being fussy.
Raul Esparza is the definitive Bobby, his version of Being Alive takes my breath away.

Met him for a sec after Les Miz and he's so nice. He took time with every fan. When he got to me and looked at me I couldn't function but I managed to at least thank him and shake his hand!

What a fantastic rendition of this song! Ramin Karimloo is unequaled in all he does! I sure hope Prince of Broadway comes to Broadway and with Ramin in it! This show is a magnificent presentation of the amazing legacy of Hal Prince! And Ramin is so very versatile in it! What a wonderful cast!

Funny story. A friend of mine saw him in Les Mis and met him after the show. He got Ramin to sign his program, which he then gave to me as a surprise because he knows how in love I am with him. It is my most prized possession. When he told Ramin the program was for his friend Angela who loves him, and smiled and blushed. I wish I could have seen it for myself! 😍

does anyone else feel like this comes really close to the spirit of the original dean jones version? they have different interpretations, but the emotion and interpretation feel really similar.
Ramin does a wonderful job but I still prefer Dean Jones. He was going thru divorce when the cast album was recorded and the emotion comes thru very clearly. Saw it on broadway with Dean Jones many many years ago

I think Ramin is just wrong for Robert, there's pain and vulnerability but hopefulness, and Ramin is strong leading man, that isn't Robert.
He reminds me so much of Raul, his voice is just cleaner

Somebody!! Tell me what it’s called (if it has a name) the little thing that happens with his voice like at the very end of the last note. Idk if it has a name but I find it very specific to ramins singing and I can’t remember hearing it in others but I love it so much
Penny J vibrato? He ends his belts with a really strong vibrato if that’s what you’re thinking of
I think Penny is talking about the 2:19 mark where at the last part of his belt, he ends it sharply by a quick rise in note? It's hard for me to describe not knowing any terms but I noticed he does it a LOT & am curious to know what the technique is called.
I think he just goes from chest voice to head voice to sustain the note longer.
Alex S. A year later haha but yes! That was the part I was talking about. It may be a switch into head voice like Ashlee said. I’ve now taken a lot more voice lessons, so I think that may qualify as a yodel ? (I still love it tho haha)
Penny J I have absolutely no experience in singing but I remember seeing someone talking about the same thing in another video of Ramin. I think they said it has something to do with the way he releases the tension in his vocal cords from belting. Supposedly, it’s a good way to come off notes.
