It's a spy story. Here's the lyrics: Saturday night I was downtown Working for the FBI Sitting in a nest of bad men Whiskey bottles piling high Bootlegging boozer on the west side Full of people who are doing wrong Just about to call up the D.A. man When I heard this woman singing a song A pair of forty fives made me open my eyes My temperature started to rise She was a long cool woman in a black dress Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall Just one look I was a bad mess 'Cause that long cool woman had it all I saw her heading to the table Well, a tall walking big black cat Charlie said, I hope that you're able, boy 'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at Well, suddenly we hear the sirens And everybody started to run Jumping under doors and tables Well, I heard somebody shooting a gun Well, the D.A. was pumping my left hand She was holding my right Well, I told her, don't get scared 'Cause you're gonna be spared I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living With a long cool woman in a black dress Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall Well with just one look I was a bad mess 'Cause that long cool woman had it all Had it all, had it all, had it all Had it all, had it all, had it all (she had it all)
Can't argue with that, saw them play their first gig as The Hollies back in 1962 at the Oasis club in Manchester when I was 18 and saw them again on numerous occasions at the same club.
Note:he Hollies based their swamp rock pastiche "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" off the basic structure of "CCR Green River"; The similarities between the two songs prompted John Fogerty to file suit against the band, alleging plagiarism. The case was settled out of court with Fogerty receiving half
I know this song well [because I grew up in this era] but I never enjoyed quite as much as today watching her enjoy it, give me more of watching her get down to music, woohoo
A Great group and song I think from 1971, my era😁I'm now 65 and a Musician who was active from 1976 thru the late 1980s, I watch videos on youtube now 😉
"A pair of 45's really opened my eyes. my temperature started to rise!" (He wasn't talking about pistols either)🤣 This was like our anthem when it came out back in the 70's!😄 Years later, I finally learned to play it, and got the sound right on that iconic guitar intro.😉👍👍👍
@@ReactToTheWorld LOL! Thanks.. it's a little tricky, but not impossible.. lots of reverb, bridge pickup only, and picking close to the bridge to get that 'snap'. 😄
History is filled with people who guessed wrong. Years ago, I had a bet ($.50) with a guy at work who swore it was a red dress. I won. Spent my winnings on a snack.

Which The Hollies song should we react to next?
Lulu's Fantasy Show: linktr.ee/clueless_lulu
John X Lulu Wicked Fun: linktr.ee/johnxlulu
I've always loved the opening guitar lick.
Early Hollies.... Bus Stop...so simple. sooooo good!
It's a spy story. Here's the lyrics:
Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whiskey bottles piling high
Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the D.A. man
When I heard this woman singing a song
A pair of forty fives made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall
Just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
I saw her heading to the table
Well, a tall walking big black cat
Charlie said, I hope that you're able, boy
'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Well, suddenly we hear the sirens
And everybody started to run
Jumping under doors and tables
Well, I heard somebody shooting a gun
Well, the D.A. was pumping my left hand
She was holding my right
Well, I told her, don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall
Well with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all (she had it all)
Lulu is my Long Cool Woman -and I saw her in a half dress! ;)
The Hollies is the most talented and coolest band in music history they have style and swag they killed it ❤❤❤❤
Swag for decades!
Totally agree...old enough to have seen them live...they were brilliant and had a unique sound.
Can't argue with that, saw them play their first gig as The Hollies back in 1962 at the Oasis club in Manchester when I was 18 and saw them again on numerous occasions at the same club.
all time classic! ♥
"He ain't heavy, he's my brother!"

That bass.....WOW!!!
So there is no confusion, it's a pair of 45s opened my eyes.

It 'was' a monster hit; ignore the gunfire, just grab that "long cool woman". Helps to read the lyrics on this one...
Long, Cool Woman = 5'9" & 45" BUST & WEARING A BLACK DRESS is the way I hear the lyrics
Killer song that has never tired.
Nobody knew what he was singing, you had to have the lyrics to know...lol

Mastering that guitar intro? That's rock 'n' roll royalty right there! 🎸

This is one of those songs that just makes you move. Like "Black Betty."
There is a version of this song on UA-cam with the lyrics. I had to guess what I thought he was singing, and I was totally wrong.

You should check out He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, great song
That's from The Hollies?
@@ReactToTheWorld Yes!
Long cool legs in a black dress
Bit of a T.Rex riff there.
"The Air That I Breathe" is a fantastic slow song.
Check out Bus Stop
I was in my 30’s before I realized this wasn’t CCR. Very close to the CCR sound.
Free the girls......😉
Rock and rack
He sang it like Dan Fogerty from CCR.
John Fogerty👍✌️
I’m as British as they come and I always found the lyrics indecipherable. A bit too much reverb. Great beat though.
Who honestly thought this was CCR, LOL I did.
For years, I thought this was a Creedence Clearwater Revival song.
I can see that!
Qbviously they borrowed the Creedence sound for this song.
Hollies were before Creedence.
