A Chinese Ghost Story - Music Video / The Lovers

  • In 1991, I saw my first Hong Kong action film, A Chinese Ghost Story, and it changed my outlook on movies forever. Once the tape went into my VHS player, it didn't come out for more than a month, launching a love affair with Hong Kong cinema that survives to this day.
This is a music video that I cut together to honor the story of the two doomed lovers, using the opening theme, sung by the late Leslie Cheung.
It probably helps if you have seen the movie, but either way, I hope you enjoy -

Love this movie. It is the first Chinese ghost that I watched when my family migrated to the West. At that time, I think, I fell in love with the main Chinese ghost. Fast forward to 2023, and hearing the music still brings back old memories.

There have been several remakes, most notably the 2011 remake starring Liu Yi Fei aka Crystal Liu (Disney Live Action Mulan). There was a lesser known remake that came out last year. It came up on China's streaming platforms and didn't have a wide release compared to the 1987 and 2011 versions. With that said, none of them were as good as the original.

It was an outmost unfortunate event that his singing career was cut short due to the intense clash between his fans and Alan Tam's sparking way too much of a controversy that leads to his ultimate departure from music during the vertex of his singing vocation to avoid further fan's altercations. By the time I get to know about him, he had long gone for his journey to the afterlife but for his short life which was as brief as a candle and the endless scuffle against depression in which he receives shorter end of the sticks for mostly but nevertheless he shoned brightly despite of all the odds throughout his life in order to convene happiness and entertainment to others, he hungs the moon truly.

Hello Khang! All of the footage in this video is from Tsui Hark's 1987 'A Chinese Ghost Story.' Please let me know if you were asking about something else! Cheers -
