Christ is born!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
Today is Tuesday 17 January 2023 and in Ukraine it is already the 328th day of the large, full-scale war that the Russian invader brought to our land.
There is a general feeling that this war is gradually escalating. Russian attacks are intensifying not only on the front line, but also upon our peaceful towns and villages. Our Donbas, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions are burning. Heavy battles are taking place around the already legendary cities of Avdiivka, Bakhmut, and Soledar. Our soldiers bravely defend against the enemy, which is many times more numerous than our defenders. According to the morning reports, yesterday our military repelled 20 attacks by the Russian occupiers on our cities and villages in just one day. Rescue and search operations in the injured city of Dnipro have been going on for several days already. The enemy hit a peaceful high-rise building with a missile designed to destroy aircraft carriers. He destroyed more than 200 apartments in which people were staying. To date, the number of dead victims who were recovered from the rubble has grown to 40. There is great pain in Ukraine today about this, but we see that no city or village can feel safe.
The enemy is always looking for new ways to target the civilian population. Our Kherson is the epicentre of a new attack by the Russians, who are methodically shooting at hospitals in this city. A children's hospital was cynically destroyed in these days. We want to remind everyone once again that this type of crime against the civilian population is a violation of international humanitarian law, which applies during any military conflict and any armed confrontation. But it looks like the Russian occupier is mostly fighting against the civilian population of Ukraine.
Children suffer the most. Our heart hurts the most for them. And so, according to the reports of the state authorities of Ukraine, as of 16 January, 336 children are officially considered missing and 455 children have died. These are the documented cases. There are 897 wounded children. But thank God that it was still possible to find 9,916 children in these stormy events of military operations amid the war in Ukraine.
Today, we want to start the new day again this morning with thanksgiving, thanks to the Lord God and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the fact that we are alive, for the fact that we can stand before the face of God and serve those who are most in need. We can serve human life, save people's dignity and life. Today we want to tell the whole world: Ukraine is standing! Ukraine is fighting! Ukraine is praying!
These days, the liturgy of our Church brings us, day after day, closer to the great feast of the Theophany, the Holy Baptism of our Saviour in the Jordan River. The tradition of the Byzantine Church really puts the feast of the Theophany on the same pedestal as the feast of the Nativity of Christ. These are two feasts that echo each other and complement and explain each other. We heard yesterday that the Troparion of the pre-feast of Theophany appeals to the land, the outskirts of the Tranjordanian region, with the call to "make ready!" It addresses the Jordan River: "Receive the Master who is coming to be baptized."
Today I would like to reflect with you about what our liturgical texts mean when they describe the place, the circumstances, and the gestures of that strange act of God's descent into the waters of the Jordan. Today, at Matins, we sang the following sticheron, which proclaimed the following: "O great and fearful mystery! God became man and, completely without knowing sin, as the iniquitous, today asks John to baptize Him in the Jordan. Blessed are You who came, O our God, glory to You!"
The word "baptize" means first of all to immerse. And today, the liturgy of preparation for this holiday puts before the eyes of our Saviour God, who, as at Christmas, humbles Himself and descends to man. And that descent of God has clear topographical signs as well. We know very well that the Jordan River flows in a tectonic fault in the earth's crust and is indeed the lowest level of land on earth. That is, going to those regions near the Jordan, our Saviour really goes down and descends. We sang of God's descent at Christmas as the Mystery of the Incarnation of God, who came down from heaven to earth and became a man. In the Jordan Theophany, the meaning of the consequences of such a divine descent seems to be revealed even more deeply. Christ goes to the Jordan to be baptized. When we hear that word in the Ukrainian language today, we may not fully understand the meaning of that gesture. "Baptize" literally means to immerse. Christ goes to immerse Himself in the waters of the Jordan. But this gesture of immersion in John's baptism means cleansing from one's sins and washing away one's own impurities. And today the liturgy reveals such an antinomy ...
