They patched it out at the start of phase 3, but it had something to do with the addon Itemrack.

No its just that you cant equip mainhand when popping shieldwall.
When only havin shield equipped and then swapping to mainhand - the shieldwall buff remained.
blizz prolly programmed shieldwall to drop when your mainhand was replaced.
